Robert C. Lacy Superintendent I Swpoitis tomAent's Mesjsjagr You've probably been so busy learning, participating in extra-curricular activities and growing up, that you haven’t had time to develop a philosophy. The dictionary says that a philosophy is the general laws that furnish the rational explanation of anything. Another definition listed is the calm judgement and equitable temper resulting from study of causes and laws; practical wisdom. Now that you have a knowledge base, develop a practical way to use your knowledge. Develop a philosophy that will allow you to act instead of react, give you comfort and peace when times are bad, (Who needs comfort and peace when times are good?) apply to many varied and unrelated situations in the same way, help guide your life and keep it on track when you don’t have time to think about whether you’re on track or not. If you ask what my philosophy is I couldn't begin to tell you all of them. My advice is to start with a few and add to them. My next advice is to reduce your philosophy to one-liners. One-liners are easier to remember, make a direct point and allow for expansion as needed. I would like to share a few of my one-liner philosophies: Smile if it kills you and you’ll die with a grin on your face. Life Is hard by the yard, but a cinch by the inch. You can't steal second base with one foot on first. Happiness is a mental attitude. You can t have your cake and eat it too. Evolve or dissolve. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Two wrongs don’t make a right. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. If you've noticed that these one-liners are not necessarily original, you are correct. Originality isn't important in philosophy. Being sincere in making them a part of you is. 6 My hope is that your philosophy serves not only yourself, but mankind as well. Good luck!
