Lacy Superintendent I Swpoitis tomAent's Mesjsjagr You've probably been so busy learning, participating in extra-curricular activities and growing up, that you haven’t had time to develop a philosophy. The dictionary says that a philosophy is the general laws that furnish the rational explanation of anything. Another definition listed is the calm judgement and equitable temper resulting from study of causes and laws; practical wisdom. Now that you have a knowledge base, develop a practical way to use your knowledge. Develop a philosophy that will allow you to act instead of react, give you comfort and peace when times are bad, (Who needs comfort and peace when times are good?) apply to many varied and unrelated situations in the same way, help guide your life and keep it on track when you don’t have time to think about whether you’re on track or not. If you ask what my philosophy is I couldn't begin to tell you all of them. My advice is to start with a few and add to them. My next advice is to reduce your philosophy to one-liners. One-liners are easier to remember, make a direct point and allow for expansion as needed. I would like to share a few of my one-liner philosophies: Smile if it kills you and you’ll die with a grin on your face. Life Is hard by the yard, but a cinch by the inch. You can't steal second base with one foot on first. Happiness is a mental attitude. You can t have your cake and eat it too. Evolve or dissolve. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Two wrongs don’t make a right. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. If you've noticed that these one-liners are not necessarily original, you are correct. Originality isn't important in philosophy. Being sincere in making them a part of you is. 6 My hope is that your philosophy serves not only yourself, but mankind as well. Good luck! Mrs. Dixie Holland and Coach Brian Deady are good examples of teachers with interesting hobbies. During working hours, Mrs. Dixie Holland is a third grade teacher. After the children leave school, she dashes home and suddenly changes to energetic racing demon. Mrs. Holland first became interested in running in 1984. While watching the summer Olympics, her husband decided that he was not exercising enough. Soon Mr. Holland was running a little every day. Two weeks later, Mrs. Holland decided he was serious about his running and she joined him. They now run two to four miles a day. Mrs. Holland sets goals for herself, reaches them and sets new ones. She also keeps a log. It motivates her to look back and see how far she has jogged. She has even entered a bi-athalon in Burleson where she ran 3.1 miles and biked 10 miles. Together, Mr. and Mrs. Holland have won numerous trophies, belt buckles gift certificates and medals. Coach Brian Deady, otherwise known as Gorilla, typifies the tough, masculine athletic director. But if you think his Iterests run only to sports, you don't know the real Coach Deady. He strongly em- phasizes academic excellence and is one of the stricter teachers. Most surprising of all is that beneath his rough and tough exterior lurks a creative, artistic soul. Coach Deady enjoys oil painting, wood burning and photography. About three years ago. Coach Deady's creative wife, Denny, bought him a surprise Christmas present — art lessons. The more he learns about painting, the more he enjoys it. His favorite scenes are horses, barns and rolling mountains. Coach Deady is also an accomplished photographer. His pho- tographs often highlight the WISE COGMTY MESSENGER. Although Coach Deady could sell his artwork, he chooses to give them as presents. And this is the guy we call Gorilla? Many thought the floats in the parade were the best ones ever. The Seniors won the float contest, with the junior float close behind. The Seniors had to build their float twice since it burned completely. The bonfire was a success, too. The week ended perfectly with a 19-0 victory over Chico. The annual staff spends many long hours struggling to make two white pages come together in an eye-catching layout. Even though most students will not appreciate what is behind the page, they will notice if a page looks good. That comment makes the long hours and frantic efforts to meet deadlines worthwhile. Through the year the staff became close as they celebrated deadlines with special parties, Including a campout. One of the year's high points was attending a luncheon where Dale Hansen from Channel 8 was the speaker. But the higgest thrill was when the staff went to Dallas to pick up the annual. Only then could they really say, IT'S A WRAP! 109 10 Isn’t That Special? As the year comes to a close, we say good-bye to a unique senior class. The seni- ors consistently offered pos- itive leadership both in ac- ademics and extra-curricular activities. The class sense of humor kept the halls and classrooms filled with laugh- ter. The seniors made the year shine bright with good times. We wish each of them a future that shines just as bright. It's A Wrap!
