Academics was a time to broaden our scope. From classmates we learned of people and places light years away, and by ourselves we explored subjects closer to home. Some of us were confined to a classroom to discover a new atom, while others took advantage of the sun and held class outside. Whatever we undertook, we all sought a place to shine in the academic field. 26 Academic Divider

Valedictorian Jill McNutt “D o you know why the guests always bring manure to a Kentucky wedding?” “Why, to keep the flies off the bride, of course.” This is the kind of Hoosier humor that Jill McNutt has lived with since her migration to Paoli six years ago. Shy Jill laughed with the good-natured teasing, but she preferred to avoid the limelight. A quiet walk in the woods or an afternoon of creating a poem or a short story gave her pleasure. But for Jill solitude was not to be. At every turn she found herself in a leadership role. Marching in front of the Pride of Paoli, field commander McNutt strutted with confidence and ease. She symbolized the finest of “The Pride” as judges ruled her top commander in the Grand Nationals. For her band accomplishments she earned the John Phillip Sousa Award. As co-editor-in-chief of the Paolite, she again collected national acclaim with an indepth story on Paoli’s elderly. The journalistic honors mounted with the addition of state and district awards and were climaxed with a journalism scholarship to Indiana University. This was the year of George Orwell’s 1984. Jill brought honor to her class of 1984 by twice being a state winner in Orwell essay competitions. Kentucky remembered export McNutt. The Louisville Courier Journal named her the only Indiana member of a teen panel which met monthly to discuss concerns of area youth. Honor Society and Tri-Hi-Y presidents and a Hoosier Scholar, the girl from Kentucky found herself in the valedictorian’s chair at graduation. The address was typical of PHS’s speech contest Grand Champion. But if anyone had bothered to inquire, scholar Jill would still prefer a walk in the woods or a quiet moment to commune with a poem. Through wind and rain. Jill mustered up enough endurance to perform her duties as track statistician. (Below) Reigning over a multitude of band members, Jill found a moment of peace in the band tower as she collected her thoughts for an upcoming competition. 28 Valedictorian
