A jealous Dolly and a somewhat selfish Charlie craved the wild west spotlights and thrived on the thrill of show biz. “Sparks” fly in western showdown Debra Stroud proved that the job of a play director was never done as she prompted lines, sang lyrics, and boogied to the beat of I Got the Sun in the Morning.’ Conceited Frank Butler snuffed the affections of the local” girls as he was proclaimed a bad, bad man. No matter what predicament he got himself into, Chief Sitting Bull could always be counted on to shoot the bull, or in the words of the great leader himself, what a na ya cecile ya?!” Annie Get Your Gun 17

Claiming “anything you can do I can do better,” sharpshooter Annie Oaktey could shoot the fuzz off of a peach, but when it came to capturing the heart of one Frank Butler a whole new line of artillery was needed. When the curtain dropped on closing night, the “Annie Get Your Gun” cast beamed proudly and breathed a sigh of relief. As the spotlights dimmed we remembered our uphill climb as amateurs. On the day of tryouts, students from every corner of PHS flooded the stage in hopes of filling the boots of Annie Oakley or Frank Butler. Lines were memorized and songs were sung until a wild west show was formed under the direction of Debra Stroud. Despite the delay of snow days, we soon discovered “there’s no business like show business.” Although Annie’s first impression was like a shot in the dark, it wasn’t long until she figured out that “you can’t get a man with a gun,” especially if that male happened to be a swollen-headed stiff named Frank Butler. After defeating Frank in a sharpshooting contest, Annie lost all hope of winning the intentions of the proud Butler. By pure accident a conniving Dolly Tate planted an idea in the matchmaking mind of Chief Sitting Bull. As a result, love came out victorious in the final shootout while Annie proved you can get a man with a gun . . . “if’n it’s defective.”

Under his mother’s watchful eye and the camera’s lens, Shayne Payton tried to find an appropriate place to pin Dawn Miller’s corsage. Promgoers cut “Footloose” Knights in shining tuxedos and damsels in beautiful gowns crossed the drawbridge back into the medieval times of castles and dungeons. A waterfall tumbling into a stream and the theme song “Against All Odds” set the mood for a night of enchantment. Promgoers danced to the beat of Zephyr. Reigning over the magical kingdom was the royal court of King Ryan Eubank, Queen Robin King, Prince Doug Powell, and Princess Stefani Hill. When the drawbridge was closed, everyone climbed aboard their white horses alias corvettes and trans ams and journeyed down to the Springs Theater to see “Footloose.” After the movie the mystical night was drawn to a close for some, but many ventured still farther into the night by holding their own afterprom as the organized afterprom was canceled due to the threat of party crashers from “the valley.” As the sun was coming up, everyone finally started for home, sleepy-eyed but full of memories of the night PHS was turned into a castle complete with knights and maidens. 18 Prom
