their drinking time in the klinker and exercising their bus tokens. Facing an election year, Gary Hart and Walter Mondale battled to split the democratic primary decision while Reverend Jesse Jackson rallied the black vote. David, alias “the bubble boy,” left the security of his plastic home in hopes that a bone marrow transplant would alter his immune system. The operation was not a success and the death of the twelve year old boy was felt across the nation. The world of medicine received a new challenge as AIDS was declared the number one priority of the US Public Health Service. Music and dance became more popular than ever as the toe tapping saga “Footloose” became the number one block buster. Videos hit the scene and with them came MTV as millions of Americans not only listened to their favorite tunes but watched them as well. The ever popular Michael Jackson sued the Pepsi Cola Company after receiving scalp burns during a commercial taping. The incident has not hindered Jackson’s popularity in the least as he and his brothers planned the biggest sell-out tour ever. The selling of Girl Scout cookies may become obsolete as a result of implanted sewing needles. Twenty-eight incidents in twelve states in which foreign objects were found in the cookies were reported. This was the world in ’84. Mini Magazine 9

THE WORLD IN ’84 Death and destruction took its toll in ’83 and '84 as the world witnessed fatal acts in the Middle East. The United States and other involved countries were shocked when a missile-firing Soviet MiG fighter plane shot down a South Korean jetliner. Two hundred sixty-nine passengers were killed, thirty of which were Americans. The Soviets wrote off the act of violence as a defense of their airspace. What started out as a peacekeeping project in Lebanon ended up in a shambles. On October 23, 1983 a “bomb truck” entered US headquarters. America wept for some 250 marines who were pronounced dead. Two days later the United States and six Caribbean nations invaded the small island of Grenada in order to prevent a bloody takeover by a group of leftist terrorists. After five months the peacekeeping mission in Lebanon was thrown in reverse as Marines started moving from their bunkers to the US Sixth Fleet offshore. Meanwhile in America, civilians created their own riots in an attempt to purchase a Cabbage Patch doll. One shopper suffered a broken leg as a result of a “Christmas mob” in Pennsylvania. Former Secretary of the Interior James G. Watt discovered that joking wasn’t his bag as he humorously described his staff as a black, a woman, two Jews, and a cripple. After removing his foot from his mouth and experiencing much ridicule, Watt resigned. George Orwell’s novel, 1984 didn’t coincide with the real thing as the new year was rung in, minus one big brother. Although the winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia, went as planned, the Soviets threw a wrench in the summer games scheduled at Los Angeles. The USSR and her satellites boycotted the games and planned to hold their own communist Olympics. Ma Bell sang the blues in tune to “Breaking up is hard to do” as AT T was forced to divide eight ways after 107 years of service. The intricate relationship between religion and government was put on the line as President Reagan proposed a constitutional amendment to permit organized prayer in the public schools. The vote results were 11 short of the two-thirds majority required for passage. Hitting a little closer to home, Indiana passed a new state law that altered a lot of drivers’ party plans. Persons caught driving under the influence will receive more than a slap on the wrist as many will spend 8 Mini Magazine

On the local scene In our small community, long-opened portals were shut as 1983-84 was marked by change. Northwood Institute’s West Baden campus closed its doors for the last time. The “eighth wonder of the world” stood quiet and empty waiting to be renovated into a hotel and health spa. While the condemned Orange County Jail released its prisoners to new quarters in the Orange County Jail and Office Complex, new scouts joined the police force. Two German shepherd dogs initiated a canine unit. The Kiwanis Club dedicated a shelter house and playground at Marea Radcliffe Park, and dollars were spent to keep the Paoli Municipal Airport from closing its runways. Paolians went to the primary polls and major Republican upsets were registered. New names will appear on the fall ballot for judge, clerk, and commissioner seats. Mother Nature followed the theme of change as fall temperatures got stuck on the 100° mark and winter winds blew in continuous days of sub-zero weather.
