i HILLCREST 1970 Paoli High School Paoli, Indiana Editor-in-chief Kathy Farlow Sponsor Mrs. E. T. Uyesugi Volume 26 CONTENTS Opening. School Life Classes 1-5 Academics 54-61 6-13 Sports 62-85 14-53 Organizations 86-105 i THE SEARCH flying on a world without a breeze search for the mysteries of space. A lonely walk in a weeded woods; A generation's search for understanding Can there be a difference? What do they seek? Their drama becomes life on stage— Actors seeking reality In make-believe roles. They blast their horns Louder—louder; And still the world waits to hear. Determined they race wildly Against a golden man— Who always wins. They hide in willows Which shelter What a world can not find—love. And the sea still holds its prizes, Because their dreams Are harder to find than worms. —And still the search. A SIGH - AND SUMMER IS NO Summer— A joyous, warm sigh between life and death— brings sleepy hours of making love to the sun on a cement beach carpeted with psychedelic towels. e Cost m Summer— A time for a midnight fire and an end to hand-holding in the Strand A time to march slowly, painfully 100 miles to a fair A time to join a weeping waterfall That speaks only the language of youth. MORE Mini, Midi, Maxi—skirts were all over the leg—up, down and in the middle. (Right) Joana Turners coat went maxi for one of the latest fashions. (Far Right) A fellow never knew whose hair he was pulling as the wig took over. Kay McIntosh became a blonde sophisticate for a senior party. 8 Latins Meet 8now, Pilgrims — Skirts Travel Like Yo-Yo's Dawn of a decade brought changes to the students of Paoli High School. One of the happiest innovations was more exchange students—girls this time. It was different for them too. (Far Left) For Pat Salavarrieto the happiness of her first snow fall and the tingle of below zero weather are white excitement. (Left) Since the Pilgrims didn't make it to Guatemala, Ana Blanco celebrates her first Thanksgiving with her adopted American family, Mr. and Mrs. John Woodburn and Mary. 9 9NAIL9 9LIDE DOWN, BALLS BOUNCE Not the usual dark, locked school building after the 3:30 bell, Paoli High School comes alive on Thursday night. Besides North-wood conducting classes at PHS, the gym is filled with intramurals and the cafetorium might be the scene of French Club s annual snail struggle. Most successful, most appreciated addition to extracurricular activities was intramural basketball action. Six girls' teams and nine boys' teams competed every Thursday night. (Right) Sherry Patton searches for someone to pass the ball to so she can get all those people out of her way. (Upper Right) Sometimes those fast-paced gal games can be so exhausting that player Nancy Lane is happy for her turn on the bench. (Above) Gary Deaton goes up for a score as his team battles to stay in a tie for first place with Ron Cox's squad. 10 UP — PHS NIGHT LIFE SWINGS Sometimes between the intramural games the cafetorium was where the action was. French Club initiates all new members with a snail feast. (Center) Kim Strother shows he enjoys the way the squirmy fellows slide down, but Vicky Thompson found they don't slide so well when your nose is the pusher. When a B-ball team wasn’t on the floor, it could always be turned into a cheering section. (Above— left to right) Ellen Strange, Donna Slayton, Myra Barker, Cindy Ramsey. Shawn Padgett, and Joy Riley. (Above Left) Leaving for the Presidential Classroom, Washington, D. C., Tom Easterday has an emotional conflict with his Yogi Bear. Nation's capitol saw other PHS students with educational objectives as J. C. Stroud traveled for his church, and Nancy Davis observed on the UN Pilgrimage. (Above Right) Bonnie Weeks, the choice of FFA boys, combined beauty and talent to become their Sweetheart. Twirler in front of the Marching Rams, Bonnie incorporated her skills into her own dance studio. (Far Right) Top commercial student Nancy Hickman was honored doubly as Betty Crocker Girl. (Right) Top senior scholar, DAR girl Nancy Davis presents a rose to new member, Kenni Lea Wellman, at Honor Society initiation. 12 HONOR: Little-Boy Dreams Grown Up Public speaking, journalism, academics, government—in. all of these fields recognition was gained by Paoli's most honored student, Charles X. McCalla. After five years of council work, Charles led the student body as president of Student Council. Extending his government influence to Boys' State, Charles combined journalism to edit sports in the Hoosier Boys' Statement. Charles' literary talents ranged from the sports sections of three newspapers to prizewinning poetry. Summation of all his honors distinguishes Charles as an Outstanding Teen, an award shared with Sharon Lindley and Nancy Davis. (Right) Council tradition sent President Charlie to crown a queen. 13 They search for a place m An angry crowd, decisive free throv A scream yell, two shiny trophies— (Elements of las asketball games I Engraved in parting memories. -v j BRENDA AGAN F.H.A. This year's seniors were freshmen on this team, and instilled in them is the pride of winning, the hustle and desire of true competitiveness. Among that frosh crop was their proudest individual accomplishment, Duane Benham. All-state honorable mention and the school's total offense record were among Duane's many achievements. An outstanding passer, Duane accumulated 4,220 yards passing in his three-year stint as the Rams' regular quarterback. Duane was also a tremendous rusher and the number one kicker in the school's history. DUANE BENHAM— A LEADER FROM A CLASS 64 OF LEADERS—'70 S FOOTBALL PRIDE Paoli was fortunate to have two players with outstanding quarterbacking talents. Filling in for Duane when he suffered a broken leg was Sophomore Jon Foddrill. Jon played at many positions for the Rams before assuming the quarterback slot. Jon didn't let down Duane s outstanding precedent at that position. In the season's finale, he led Paoli to a single game record of 70 points and 286 yards passing. Another standout for Paoli was Mark Hudleson. For Mark 1969 was a search for the way back, and he certainly found it. After being sidelined with an injury for two years, Mark came on to lead the receivers with five touchdowns and to rank second in total yards with 409. 65 Jamboree Turns For 7-3 Victory on Ram Power Chain (Above) The Perry Central slaughter finally ended 59-0. (Center) Mark Hudleson moves back for the pass while brother Rex and the Huntingburg squad await the inevitable. 66 After the Rams routed Bedford and Jasper in the Jambo'ee, the taste of victory was not to be denied. They kept this taste throughout the season ending with a 7-3 record, the second best in Paoli history. Among those that made it possible were Junior all-conference guard and linebacker Rex Hudleson, all-conference running back Ed Uyesugi and all-conference defensive back Gordon Denny. Rex's fine blocking and tackling earned him a spot on the Courier-Journal team and second best tackling honors. Ed also made the Courier-Journal squad after amassing a total of 1369 yards and 108 total points. Ninety-seven solo tackles speaks for itself as Gordon Denny led all defensive backs and was third leading tackier for the Rams. Top tackling honors went to Melvin England as he racked up 155 victims. For many seniors the end of the search for another conference crown came much too soon. John McBride, Jack Coulter, John Wells, Charlie Mc-Calla, Kent Holaday, Terry Apple, Glenn Daugherty, Dave Pittman. Giant Killers Slay Conference The search for a third conference title meant long, hot summer hours on the practice field. Victories came quickly, but the Rams’ bubble was burst by a strong Brownstown team. Hopes for a tie ended with a trip to the hospital and a wounded quarterback. Then came Clarksville and Valley, and only Washington brought joy to the Rams. This year's squad included: FIRST ROW, left to right: Don Frank, Alan Allred, Billy Bowles, Frank Archer, Eugene Piatt, Mark CooJc, Joe Gilliatt, Jerry Wells, John England, John Plem-mons. Shooting From Dawn 'Til Dark, Copper Molds Team Of Champions Mike Copper stepped down from the realm of his highly successful colleqe team and Little All-American nomination to take on the task of rebuilding consistent winning basketball at Paoli. Behind this new Ram was a proud heritage. Included in Coach Copper's list of records was the national record for 409 straight free throws. It took Coach Copper's team only 13 games to match last year's 24 game win total of 8. Once again, for the first time in five years, Paoli was in the thick of the conference chase. County rival Valley came into the Ram sectional and with Holiday Tourney and regular season games to heighten the enthusiasm, sectional anticipation reached a fever pitch for these two teams. After taking the Holiday Tourney crown from the Rams, Valley fell to Paoli on their home floor in an overtime. The tremendous Paoli effort that game marked perhaps the regular season’s most rewarding victory. Everybody had victorious ideas for the Rams, even the referees!
