P H S BCYS BASKETBALL There they were! L The Panera basketball squad of 1951-53' f1'ULt31G fifft iaw of up gticc Inzianily 6107 knew they were one of the shortest Jas-9t ball squads in Panera history, The year before, graduation took their two tallest men, Dick Arganbright, who had led the conference scoring for 3 con- secutive years, and Ben Bascom, a 6' 3' aggressive rebounding forward, The Blue Jays knew they were going to have to shoot and rebound against taller opponents the entire year. Panora BlueJays began their season with the determination that theylere going to overcome their disadvantages with good ball handling and scrapinesl Starting the season out 8 days after the last football game, they dropped games to tough Exira and Coon Rapids crews, and bounced back to take their first win over Earlham, makeing the Blue and White one of the leading con- tenders for the conference title. The Blue Jays now felt that they were on the road to recovery. They were adding experience as working as a unit, in- creasing better ball handling and rebounding. One thing hampered the fight- ing Blue Jays then and throughout the season--they could not get their scor- ing-eye sharpened up and hence shooting percentages were below opposing ball teams. Later in conference play, they found that although losing several con- ference games, the conference title had not been decided yet. Our quintet won games over Stuart, Dallas Center, Dexter and Earlham ln conference play. Panora was beaten both times by first place Redfieldg they played gallantly both times being beaten once only by 3 points. Panora ended the season's playing with 6 wins against 6 losses for a fourth place in the conference. Outside while losing over Jamaica of the conference, the Blue Jays in regular season play won 2 to 7. In the county tournament, the Panora fire won a thriller and lost to a tough Bayard team. In the sectional the Blue Jays again met the Bayard quintet, losing this time by a smaller margin. Pancra ended with a season's record of 9 wins and 14 losses with a scoring aver- age cf 35.8 against an opponent's average of 38.9. Leading scorers for the season were Jim Dahlke, senior forwardg and Tom Caulklns, freshman center. Seniors on the basketball squad leaving this year's squad are: Ralph Long, Jim Dahlke, Ed Dudley, John Maddick, and Harold Marshman. Considering the facts that the Blue Jays had a height disadvantage most of the year an were in the upper half of the conference, the Blue Jays had another successful year in the basketball history of Panora High School.
