In the fall of 1948, our class with thirty-three members started its journey to success. We elected as our officers: Edward Dudley, president, Keith Trent, vice-president, John Maddick, secretary and treasurer, Saundra Usden, student council member. Miss McLennan was our class sponsor. During the year we lost five members: Donna Downing, Mary Etta Flanery Alton Harris Gene Harris, and LeRoy Moore. Our second year, we selected as our class off1cers:John Maddick, presi- dent, Keith Trent, vice-presldentg Saundra Haden, secretary and treasurer. This year we lost one and gained two. Dorothy Simonsen moved, Joyce Hultt started the first of the year, and Gerald Songer started the second semesten Miss McLennan was again our class sponsor. As we started our Junior year, we felt we had gained some, but most of us were not satisfied. We elected as our officers: Donna Burgess nresldentg Phyllis Stotts, vice-president, Harold Marshman, secretary and treasurer. We lost two this year: Shirley Cromwell and Joyce Huitt. Our class sponsor was Mrs. Norvell. On October 21, we presented our class play, 'Lavender and Old Lace.n In May we held our Junior-Senior Prom with a 'Mardi grasu theme. Finally we have reached our fourth and last year of high school. we have found that the four years have gone amazingly fast. We elected as class officers: Norman Warford, presldentg Keith Trent, vice-president, Ralph Long, secretary and treasurer, James Dahlke, student council member, Saundra Haden, reporter, and Edward Dudley, sergeant-at-arms. We were sponsored by Mr. Ferguson. We chose green and white as our class colors, and red rose as our class flower. Skip day came in May and we went to Chicago. Baccalaureate was May ll, 1952, and commencement, the ending of our wonderful high school days was May 14,l952. Leaving with hopes we can live up to our class motto, 'Our aim--to succeed, our hope--to win. 1 1 ' 66044 WW LiSm WILL JLD IESTALEHT OF TEE SENIOR CLASS OF 1952 We the Cllss of '52 hlve completed our courses and now are through. On Friday, November 16, the Junior class presented HDesperate Ambroee,' a play which took place in the uwild and woolly west,' amongst some blood thirsty cowboys. Some visitors at the hotel were mistaken for one of the fastest gun totln' men in the west. This guest happened to be Ambrose, a vaudeville actor. So Ambrose played the part of the great desperado and got himself into some very nshakyn and unpredictable scenes. Of course, as all stories go, the hero caught the outlaws and was the lucky winner of the pretty girl. The play was presented at a matinee Friday afternoon and then on Friday evening also. This was the first time that a class had presented a matinee of its pla' for several years. Leaving behind one of the poorest seasons in history, the Bluejays were looking forward to a success- ful season. with these high hopes in mind, thirty-six hopeful Bluejays started to prepare for their first game with the powerful team from Exlra, which was three weeks away. When the time came to begin the playing season, the Bluejays fought--they were small in size, but immense in determination. Panora got off to a flying start scoring first, later in the game they found that their weak passing defense and weight disadvantage was the deciding factor in the game. The following week the local eleven had a better pass defense and more drive and were anxious to win their first conference game. In an incessant rain the Bluejays pushed the heavier Adel team all over the field for a 12-O score. The Bluejays, now with more confidence and experience, took wins over Dexter and Dallas Center with heavy scores. Then came the hard-running, charging Earlham team. Scoring on the first play, they got their hands on the ball and went on to win by five touchdowns. With the homecoming game coming up and the continued hope of ranking high in the conference, the Bluejaye were not broken by their late defeat. The following week they came back and beat a hard charging Redfield by a score of 6-O. Then came the last conference game with the Stuart Dragons, who beat a hard-fought game by one touchdown. After that, games were lost to ncn-conference Scranton and Guthrie Center who outweighed the local eleven considerably. Panora ended third in the conference with 4 wins and 2 losses and for a total season's record of 4 wins and 5 losses. Individual honors went to Keith Trent, All Conference End, Jim Dahlke, All Conference Back and also placed on Jack North's honor roll, Gary Haddick, All Conference Center, Harold Marshman, All Conference Tackle. lqle Rey- nolds, end, John Maddick, guard, and Edward Dudley, back, were named on the All Conference Honor Roll. L The Panera basketball squad of 1951-53' f1'ULt31G fifft iaw of up gticc Inzianily 6107 knew they were one of the shortest Jas-9t ball squads in Panera history, The year before, graduation took their two tallest men, Dick Arganbright, who had led the conference scoring for 3 con- secutive years, and Ben Bascom, a 6' 3' aggressive rebounding forward, The Blue Jays knew they were going to have to shoot and rebound against taller opponents the entire year. Panora BlueJays began their season with the determination that theylere going to overcome their disadvantages with good ball handling and scrapinesl Starting the season out 8 days after the last football game, they dropped games to tough Exira and Coon Rapids crews, and bounced back to take their first win over Earlham, makeing the Blue and White one of the leading con- tenders for the conference title. The Blue Jays now felt that they were on the road to recovery. They were adding experience as working as a unit, in- creasing better ball handling and rebounding. One thing hampered the fight- ing Blue Jays then and throughout the season--they could not get their scor- ing-eye sharpened up and hence shooting percentages were below opposing ball teams. Later in conference play, they found that although losing several con- ference games, the conference title had not been decided yet. Our quintet won games over Stuart, Dallas Center, Dexter and Earlham ln conference play. Panora was beaten both times by first place Redfieldg they played gallantly both times being beaten once only by 3 points. Panora ended the season's playing with 6 wins against 6 losses for a fourth place in the conference. Outside while losing over Jamaica of the conference, the Blue Jays in regular season play won 2 to 7. In the county tournament, the Panora fire won a thriller and lost to a tough Bayard team. In the sectional the Blue Jays again met the Bayard quintet, losing this time by a smaller margin. Pancra ended with a season's record of 9 wins and 14 losses with a scoring aver- age cf 35.8 against an opponent's average of 38.9. Leading scorers for the season were Jim Dahlke, senior forwardg and Tom Caulklns, freshman center. Seniors on the basketball squad leaving this year's squad are: Ralph Long, Jim Dahlke, Ed Dudley, John Maddick, and Harold Marshman. Considering the facts that the Blue Jays had a height disadvantage most of the year an were in the upper half of the conference, the Blue Jays had another successful year in the basketball history of Panora High School.
