HISTORY Of- THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1902 1953 A group of exc1ted youngsters started to school 1n September 1941 rn temporary classrooms 1n the old grade school aud1tor1um w1th Mrs Ratt Lou Turprn as teacher The youngsters are tl1e Senrors of 1953 Of the orrgrnal group the followmg are st1ll 111 the P II S class JACKIE MOORE JIMMY OSBORNE MARY SUI: RUSS DOLORES ROHAN MARSHALL SHERWOOD and CHARLOTTE HINSH AW Our second year was taught bv MISS Mary Ewmg who IS st1ll teachmg 1n Panhandle She taught us to WYIIC lrlstead Of IO Prmt Jolrung the class were BILL MCLEOD and ROYAL DEAN PARRISH Mrs Kellus T urner taught the 7 B sectron of our class At l'Il1d term we had a pleasant move 1nto the west wmg of what IS now the Jumor hrgh bu1ld1ng In the th1rd grade we felt rather grown up because we learned the mult1pl1cat1on tables and on our report cards were real honest to goodness grown up A s B s and C s 1nstead of the S s I s and U s Mrs Clara Cornel 1us who IS retrred and l1v1ng rn Panhandle was our teacl1er The recently organrzed Future Teachers Club of P H S was named tl1e Clara l,0l'llC1lllS Club 1n her honor NORMAN BONNER was an add1t1on to our class The year 1944 45 was very successful Wllh MISS Mrldred McFerren as teacher JOYCE SIMPSON RALPH DETTEN and PEGGY MOORE Jorned our ranks that year The next year we welcomed GLENNA RAE DOWNS and DEAN LEWELLEN MISS Margaret L1ll was our homeroom teacher but we drd departmental work and had several drfferent teachers Mrs Jeffre Feaster was homeroom teacher 1n the slxth grade whrle Mrs Aud1e Morgan and Mrs Nanette Pad get shared us as homeroom teachers for the seventh grade Durrng the second semester that year our group was unrted aga1n w1th Mrs Morgan as homeroom teacher New students were BETTY BOOTHE BOBBY ISERAL JOY NEWCOMB and WESLEY WOOD The elghth grade was an eventful year w1th a formal banquet graduatron and other BCIIVIIICS but our num ber d1d not permanently rncrease Ralph Detten was our class pres1dent and the motto chosen was Forget yester day work today and plan for tomorrow Another freshman class of consrderable 1mportance we thought stormed tl1e halls of P H S 1n September 1949 BETTY BEDNORZ BON NIE BLACKWELL AILEEN MERONEY VIRGINIA NAYLOR ROLAND SIPES SHIR LEY TIPTON and GENE TRENT cast therr lot w1th us that year We frlled all of the pages of the boox Wlth our freshmen m1stakes and blunders but a merry t1me was had by all Wlth Davld Lasher class sponsor and Ralph Detten pres1dent As was to be expected freshmen never have the assurance though our year as sophomores came the next year From the standpomt of h1stor1cal reflectrons It was a rather uneventful year Our scrapes and predrcaments were not drfferent to those of our predecessors but they were almost certa1nly more numerous Sponsor B111 Immel saw us through and managed to get us promoted to tl1e Junxor ranks for the next year Chester Wetsel and John Truelove prloted our Shlp through the stormy decrsrons of select1ng r1ngs and p1ns and plann1ng the junror sen1or banquet wh1ch we successfully executed on Apr1l 26 1n the War Memor1al Burldrng JOHN HEITMAN and ROSA CUMMINGS were new to the class Gene Trent was Junror class pres1dent Thrs year as SCHIOIS IU hrgh school has been the most rmportant 1nterest1ng exc1t1ng and we hope successful perrod of our young careers We have worked d1l1gently and played hard we are so busy enJoy1ng and prof1t1ng from the present and plann1ng for the future that there IS lrttle t1me for reflectrons on the past The class IS well represented 1n lrterary athletrc and other school orgamzatrons One hrgh lrght of the year was the sen1or play Gangway for Ghosts wh1ch was presented March 12 The Jumors gave us an elaborate banquet on May 2 and we made a never to be forgotten sen1or tr1p on May 14 17 Pr1nc1pal Howard Am1ck who has helped us schedule our classes through our hrgh school years had to make an add1t1on to HIS schedule when our class elected hrm and Davrd Lasher as seruor sponsors Lourse Pysher IS our only new member thrs year We brd good bye to P H S leavmg behrnd many pleasant memorres and countless good wrshes for 1ts cont1nu1ng good work By Charlotte Hrnshaw .
