SENIOR HIS TORY In September of 1937 a group of very shy flrst graders entered the Panhandle School system Among the s e were I., Bernauer Betty Beason Ida Beth Broad way juanno jo Broadway joyce Cumrn1ngs,Barbara Davxs Brlly Lannxng Inez Mea ker Ola Fay Russ jrmmy Vt h1te M1ss Cope was the class s f1rst teacher and the exc1t1ng events of thxs year zncluded learrung to read and wr 1te a trlp to the Carrat son farm west of town and Bxlly Lanrung s b1rthday party When 1938 rolled around Roland Skelton and james Cl1ntonjo1ned the group 1 n M1ss Mary Ew1ng s homeroom The ways were parted for the th1rd grade for some of the class were 1n Mrs Cornehus s room whlle a few othersJo1ned M1ss Hawkxns and pa r t of the second grade upstalrs VK endell Dart, Emma jean Guether and Bobby joe Harb1son w e r f. the add1t1ons thxs year The fourth grade, spent w1th Mrs J M Knowles and M1ss Haggxns was Jolned by Velma Pratt jan Caldwell and Suz1e Huff The class were guests of joyce Cum rrnngs for a P1Cl'11C on her farm 1n the spr1ng That wonderful fxfth grade The entlre class sklpped lt to make room for the twelve grade system Our fxrst d1v1ded classes c ame 1n the s1xth grade w1th Mr Hancock solemn faced kxds l1stened to the broadcast of the declaratlon of war rn the battered old hbrary The seventh grade was a y e a r of crowded confus1on and hosts of new k1ds Glen Whxtlow, Sara Hawley Dewolene Mar r Dolores Cope Claude Musgrove, and Marlon Shroeder all came from the Petrol1a Ward School Novella Weatherly a nd N1ta Ketchum moved 1n to represent Conway The war brought many more add1t1ons but Burms Lyles and Earl Darnell were the only two who stayed A new bu1ld1ng bexng constructed f.h1S year drove the seventh grade to the h1gh school bu1ld1ng much to the envy of grade school The e1ghth grade was spent 1n the old clock room Mrs Corder and Mrs Pad gett were our homeroom teachers and Donald Detton was a new pup1l Undoubtedly the hlghlxght of thxs year was our cowboy e1ghth grade banquet our fxrst soc1al event Our freshman year was one of fe ar and tremblxng W e were accused of dolng everyth1ng from pa1nt1ng SENIORS 48 on the town to sw1p1ng money Carl Adcock, Pearl Raef and .I B Hall Jo1ned us th1s year Katherrne Terrall sponsored us and by the t1me of our annual s chool p1cn.1c at Amar1llo we had lost practxcally all of our freshmen meekness Mrs Elsle Porter was our s pons o r dur1ng our sophomore ye a r At last we could breath easy and p1ck on the f1sh We began to really be b1g shots durxng our jumor ye ar Th1s was the year of many changes We helped t 0 run off f1V6 teachers D e s p lt e tlus d1ff1culty, Mr s Wester guxded us through a beautlful JUHIO1 Seruor b anqu et Leola Mooney jack Curtxs, and Charles Wrxght dec1ded to make Panhandle themr home th1s year And now we have been senlors and our school l1fe ln Panhandle 1S ended Nell Faulkner and Betty Morgan moved xn tlus year All we have left are our sh1ny sen 1or rlngs, our dlploma and enough memorles to f1l1 a book our defeat atthe Spear man football game, our excxtement as the cast for our play was announced, our lumpy throats at graduatxon, the feelmg of excmtement as we started out that early mormng for Carlsbad these w1ll always remam as a record of the happ1est days of our 11fe - 1 1 . , . , - 1 1 1 1 '- . , . . 1 . , 1 1 f 1 , - . . 1 . , 1 , 1 . . 1 1 1 . 1 . . . . . . , .
