X f ' My X ff ff' I ' H X -X x f m x f f ff X X N X 2 wo RK if-5 X N SENIOR HISTORY After seven fun filled years of grade school, forty five ner vous freshmen moved, with fear and trembl1ng, up and down the halls of P H S in Sept 1940 Gloria Cantrell was chosen president, Marvin Sparks vice president, Maudell Lemons secretary, and Ann Simms treasurer They chose as their class colors, green and gold, as their flower, the sunflower, and as their motto, Wwe stand now, never to fall ' With Miss Hawkins to guide the boisterous group, they went successfully through the year and completed it w1th a p1c nic in Buchanan Street Park in Amarillo The end of the summer months found the industr1ous Sophomores agaln busy at their studies The officers for the year were Howard Ray Pru1tt, president, Ann Simms, v1ce pres1dent, Dorothy Evans secretary, Maudell Lemons, treasurer, and Betty Jo Durrett, report The group selected uWe're on our way up' as the1r motto, pink and blue as their colors, and the sweet pea as the1r flower Mrs Patterson was again the class sponsor The h1ghl1ght of the year was a picnic in San Jacinto Park at the close of school Under the sponsorship of Mrs John 0'Keefe these asp1r1ng Marvin Sparks, president, Ann S1mmS, vice pres1dent, Vernon Thomp son, secretary, Dorothy Evans, treasurer, and Betty Jo Durrett, reporter They chose for their motto 'He that plants thorns must never expect to gather roses,n for the1r colors, blue and white, and for their flower, the wh1te carnatlon Next in lmportance to the Junior Senior Banquet, the climax of the year, was the order ing of our Senior rings Because of the war, we were permitted to get our Sen1or rings, when we were JuD10rS Other events of the year were a Halloween party with the Seniors, and a Christmas party at Mrs O Keefes Of the thirty four Seniors that enrolled 1n the fall of 1943, nine had started together in the first grade The officers for the year were Marvin Sparks, president, Jay Hawley, vice pres1dent, Dorothy Evans, secretary, Betty Jo Durrett, treasurer, and Ann Simms, reporter The motto was HI am not afraid of tomorrow, for I have seen yesterday and I love today H Red and wh1te were the colors, and the red rose was the flower The first social event of the year was a Christmas party at Mrs Simms including the traditional tree and carolling Other outstanding events of the year were Sneak Day, the Senior Play, the Junior Senior Banquet, and the Junior Senior football game The true realization of their serious ambitions came to the group w1th the Baccalaureate sermon and Commencement U . , . . , , er. ' . 4.4 'T FOOTBALL YL hm FOOTBALL SUVIVIHRY On September 1, under the direct1on of the1r new coach, James McDan1els, approximately twenty f1ve boys reported for practice in preparatlon for the com1ng 1943 Panther football season After two weeks of hard practlce, the Panthers won a 6 0 v1ctory over a bigger Friona eleven The Panthers brought Glory to Panhandle H1gh on September 17 when the Hereford Whitefaces were beaten 13 to 7 1D one of the most exc1t1ng games of the season On October l 1n the f1rst conference game of the season, the Panthers tasted defeat for the f1rst time when Canad1an won a hard fought battle 25 to The next week the Panthers reentered the w1n column w1th a 13 to 0 v1c tory over the T1gers of McLean The second conference game found the Panthers on the bottom end of the score. White Deer won by a score of 26 to 6. Th1s was the last defeat of the season on Panther field. Following the White Deer game, the Panthers won an easy v1ctory over an 1nexper1enced and smaller Dumas eleven 19-0. In the most thrilling game of the season, the Panthers were defeated 1n a bitterly fought game by the1r tradit1onal rivals, the Ph1l1ips Blackhawks. An early touchdown proved too much for them, and the f1nal score was 25 to 0. The Panthers never qu1t fighting, and they over powered Sam Houston Jun- 1or High of Amarillo 27 to 0 the next week, The Panthers were to end the football season 1D a blaze of glory, They concluded it with an 1mpress1ve 12 to 0 V1Ct0Ty over the Perryton Rangers. Th1s was the only conference V1CtOry for the Panthers. Even though the Panthers failed to w1n the d1StT1Ct championsh1p, they clearly and gallantly played a marvelous brand of football, In a way they were champ1ons, and we're proud of you, Panthers!
