Undaunted by the jeers of upperclassmen, they chose as their class colors, pink and blue, as their flower, the sweet pea. Dawson Little was chosen as president, Lenola 0'Neal as vice-president, Paul Lewis as secretary, Mildred Calliham as treasurer, and Weldon York as reporter. Miss Jo Rutledge guided the bois- terous class successfully to the capping climax of its year--a picnic in the San Jacinto Park in Amarillo. After taking and giving a much needed rest, the group again pranced merrily up the sidewalk and through the doors of our school. It is true that a number of headaches was the result--to the teachers and especially to Miss Frances Munson. Miss Munson's duty was to lead and improve this already intellectual group. The colors chosen were purple and white, and the flower was the violet. As its officers the class chose Lenola O'Neal, president, Dawson Little, vice-president, Mary Anna Roberts, secretary, Naomi Smith, treasurer, Weldon York, parliamentariang and Virginia Biggs, reporter. When Christmas rolled around, a party was held in the gym to celebrate the class's state of bankruptcy. Staging a brilliant come-back in the spring, this frivolous group showed the Juniors a bit of financial strategy When the day for the popularity contest dawned, the Juniors had only one dollar and thirt -nine cents more to their candidates' credit The class contrived and succeeded in ra sing enough funds to celebrate the close of school with a picnic in Elwood Park in Amarillo Back to school again came these fifty students, showing a definite air of owner- ship as they marched briskly about, performing their various duties Choosing as its colors, blue and white, and as its flower, the gardenia, the group realized a very successful year The officers were Paul Lewis, president, Mary Anna Roberts, vice- president, Virginia Biggs, secretary, Merl Pruitt, treasurer, and Weldon York, reporter Mrs Hassler Strickland acted as sponsor during the first few weeks, with Mrs John 0'Keefe filling the position the latter part of the year The class had a pie supper at Christmas, and under Mrs 0'Keefe's able direction succeeded in sponsoring one of the most delightful Junior Senior banquets ever presented The prom held in the gym at the conclusion of the banquet was also a pronounced success A NConfucius Say' theme was used throughout the entire festivity As their final social event, the Juniors had a picnic at the Gulf Camp Picnic Grounds Having completed three hilarious years in P H S , the fifty students that enrolled as Seniors on September 2, 1940, started the final year of their high school career HLaunched, but not anchored' proved to be a very appropriate motto, and tradition w not broken when the class chose red and white as the class colors and the red rose as the flower Officers were Paul Lewis, president, Lenola 0'Neal, vice president, Virginia Biggs, secretary, Weldon York, treasurer, and Ella Crow, reporter Miss Munson was elected to sponsor this diligent group The first social event of the year came when the class had a box supper in the high school cafeteria In accordance with the annual custom of entertaining with a Christmas Party, the classmates exchanged their gifts in the Senior Room on December 20 Following this party, social activities were placed in the background as the Seniors settled down to the pursuit of their studies for a short time However, the period of temporary diligence was short lived, the annual popularity contest, sponsored by the Panther Scream was the cause After much excitement and delay, the Senior candidates Mary Anna Roberts and Berl Pruitt, were victorious and thus carried on the unbroken precedent of the Seniors' winning the popularity contest Back to work they went With the spring came the return to social life Their Kid Day will never be forgotten and the enjoyable hours spent at work on the Senior Play will live long in the minds came when the class attended the Junior Senior Banquet planned and carried out by Mrs 0'Keefe and members of the Junior Class The Seniors were again placed in contact with the Juniors when the Junior Senior Football Game was played The climax of the year's activities came with the trip to Carlsbad Caverns It was a fine group which marched silently out the doors of P H S on Commencement Night with the realization that the grand days spent in dear old Panhandle High School were gone forever ' is . ! 0 9 and hearts of the Seniors. FIRST STRING FQOTB!-XLL SUMMARY The Panthers began practice on September 1 in preparation for their 1940 football season. Approximately twenty-five boys reported for the first day's practice. After two weeks of practice, the Panthers opened the season on Panther field with a close 7 to 6 victory over the strong Claude Mustangs. The boys then worked hard for their next game with their traditional rivals, the Wellington Skyrockets. Their efforts were not in vain, and the Cats romped to an easy 33 to 0 victory. - The next week the Panthers journeyed to McLean where they played the best game they had played during the season in beating the Tigers 25 to 0. Following the McLean game, the undefeated Panthers went to Canadian for their first conference game. After a hard battle, the Panthers managed to turn back the fighting Wildcats by the score of 19 to 6. The Panthers journeyed to Borger for their next game and tasted defeat for the first time in losing a 20 to 13 decision to the strong Borger Bull- dogs. After losing to the Bulldogs, the Cats returned home for a conference game with the Spearman Lynx. Doped to be easy pickin's the Lynx fell before the Panthers by a score of 46 to 7. The following week the Phillips Blackhawks played the Cats on Panther field with the district championship at stake. The battle raged furiously for four quarters, but two early touchdowns proved too much of a handicap for the Panthers, and they were defeated 14 to 6. Although their big chance of winning the district had been lost, the Panthers never quit fighting. They defeated the White Deer Bucks 7 to 0 the following week, and then closed their season with a 21 to O victory over the Perryton Rangers. Even though the Panthers, ed t the district championship, they played a marvelous brand o oo all. They played cleanly, gallantly, and in a way, they were champions. We're proud of you, Panthers! iw K ,W . .AU ,V 1 .,..u.df-arf., '- .. . -.....-.... 35 fffff ,4iiS 4 -9 Q f,.. N R0 26 s..- BASKETBALL FIRST ROW: G. J. Atkins, Coach, Howard Cox, Berl Pruitt, Harold Dennis, Jack Powell. SECOND ROW: Charles Cunningham, Robert Bonner, Lee Roy Cox, Merl Pruitt, Emerald Lee Held Facing the season with a small amount of material and few reserves, the Panthers were forced to make the most of a bad situation. While they were outclassed and out manned on the floor, they were never outfought, and they never quit trying. Although the team won only three games, Coach Jack Atkins is to be commended for his never tiring work with the inexperienced boys.
