After spending 21 years of his career with the Pandora-Gilboa schools, he is missed very much by everyone. Before Mr. Arthur came to our school, he was at Beaverdam School and at Moulton School, Auglaize County. Mr. Arthur has covered many areas of teaching and administration, from bus driver, cafeteria manager, junior high teacher, industrial arts teacher to principal and superintendent and past president of the Principals Discussion Group. Besides his career in education, Mr. Arthur served with the U.S. Army from 1943-1946. He is very active in church work at the Gilboa United Methodist Church, and is past commander of the American Legion Harter-Williams Post 536 in Gilboa. We wish Mr. Arthur much good luck and happiness in his new job as Allen County Curriculum Coordinator, where he works with Bath and Perry Elementary Schools and at the Allen County Education Office in Lima. 4 Historical Events Of Pandora-Gilboa PANDORA Pandora, was first called Columbia, laid out in 1837 by John Stout. In 1850 the town was renamed Pendleton and in 1882 the name was changed to Pandora. The township's first settler was Samuel Gray, who settled three miles southeast of the present site of Pandora in 1833. Shortly afterwards, he built the first grist mill. Many of the early settlers were Mennonites, who had come from Wayne County, Ohio. Originally they had emigrated from Switzerland and France, although they spoke German or German-Swiss. By 1840 they had a substantial hewed-log church. Christian Steiner was the first pastor. The first school-house in Pandora was a log building. The first high school building was erected in 1895 at a cost of $15,000. The first graduate from the high school was Mary Davy in 1898. The first house was built by John Sigafoose. He was molested by the bears before it was finished. The first road that passed through the townwhip was the Williamstown Road, which passed along the west bank of the Riley Creek. The first bridge was built over Riley Creek on the Ridge Road, it was a hewed-log bridge and washed away in February of 1865. There were many businesses in Pandora, but the largest one was the Overall Factory. It was organized in August of 1901. G1LBOA Gilboa derived its name from the Ml. Gilboa mentioned in the Bible. From 1840 through the early 1850's the village grew rapidly. Among Gilboa's earliest prominent citizens were Elisha Stout, who owned the first grist mill and the first saw mill. William McClure who built a tavern in 1832; Matthew Chambers, who built a brick hotel in 1840; and Edward Mercer, who opened a general store; Nelson McAllister was the one to build the first frame house. The first Putnam County Fair was held in Gilboa in 1854. Gilboa's one and only newspaper, “The Gilboa News, began to publish in 1898 and continuedfor two years. A disastrous fire destroyed several business places on the north side of Main Street in April, 1909. Another large fire on April 27,1926 swept away the businesses on the south side of Main Street. The brick hotel was destroyed by fire in December, 1932. The village has never recovered from these losses. However, Gilboa has several thriving businesses today. 5 Superintendent A nd Principals Mr. James Baxter - Superintendent Second Semester Mr. Glenn Rader - Elementary Principal Mr. Howard Warncke - High School Principal 6 Board Of Education Bottom Row Sum i. ■«.. mZ'JZZ. • .. cu „ _ . “ ■ Top Pow: Mildred Lugfbihi, Em„„ And you know how I love b' Laughing at the questions that Do you know where you're going to?. The team will be losing 7 starting seniors, but with the pitching and experience of the underclassmen, the Rockets will be looking for another good year. Steve Schmenk received second place in the BVC. The Rockets finished 7th out of 13 teams in the sectional against some very strong competition. Coach Rod McDaniel thinks the outlook for next year is even better yet, with five returning lettermen. A young, inexperienced Rocket football team got off to a slow start this year losing three out of their first four games. However, with the gaining of experience, the Rockets came on strong and finished with a 6-4 record. The highlight of the season was a come from behind victory over Columbus Grove to regain possession of the traveling trophy. Second team all BVC honors were earned by Bill Suter, offensive end; Brion Basinger, quarterback; and Dan Velasquez, defensive back. Honorable Mention status was achieved by Don Pierman, Mike George, Steve Reichenbach and Frank Niese. The football fortunes at P-G should continue to improve as 12 lettermen will be returning for the 1976 season. In addition, the J.V. and Freshman teams are coming off of 6-2-2 and 3-1-1 seasons respectively and should provide good team depth. 1975 Football Results Leipsic P-G 0 OPPON1 21 Arlington 0 6 McComb 7 0 Van Buren 6 7 Arcadia 27 0 Vanlue 33 9 Cory-Rawson 6 22 Liberty-Benton 27 19 Hardin-Northern 32 0 Columbus Grove 20 16 7t Varsity Basketball 72 With only one returning letterman, the basketball team of 1975-1976 was a fairly successful one. In the BVC the Rockets had an experiencing season with a final record of 4 wins and 5 losses. In P.C.L. action the Rockets fell to a losing record with a 1-5 season end. The Rockets had a player that was rated all-league, 1st team in P.C.L. and also in the B.V.C., and these honors went to Roy Hermiller. Roy was also voted M. V.P. for the Rockets. But all the players had good ability and deserve a lot of credit. With a lot of work, next year's team should be a just and rewarding team. The J.V.'s were a very competitive bunch of players. They had their problems in the beginning of the year, but finally worked as a team later on in the season. These guys should help the Varsity out a lot in the next couple of years. Bob Reichenbach was voted by the team as the Most Valuable Player of the team this year. J. V. FRESHMAN BASKETBALL The 1975-76 Freshman Basketball team finished a frustrating season with a final record of five wins and nine losses. Six of the team's nine losses were by five points of less. Hopefully, the young men on the team learned something about poise, self-control, confidence, and intentness. Several members of this team possess a great amount of natural ability and with some dedication and serious practice these young men could become major contributors to successful junior varsity and varsity basketball teams here at Pandora-Gilboa High School. The Minor Staff worked extra hard this year, since we added eight pages of color to our book, and color costs money. Since the color must be in one section only, we chose to picture every senior at least one time. We worked in a little bicentennial theme, but did not go all out, since this takes extra pages. We wish to thank all of the business people who advertised in our book, since we could not afford an annual without your help. The Mirror Staff is also the Senior Intensive Office Education class and have had absolutely no prior training before organizing, writing copy, and laying out this book. Also, we have had no photography; therefore, we feel that this project is a learning activity that teaches cooperation, getting along with others, planning, and using imagination. Since the Senior IOE students are in office classes nearly 1440 hours during their junior and senior years, the yearbook is a welcome and useful activity.
