At the beginning, 28 boys answered Coach Paul Owen's call. The squad was built around halfbacks Denny Hagg and Vince Damon. Upon losing the opening two games to Sherman and Hinsdale, the Panthers defeated Clymer by the score of 13-7. Although they lost the remaining three games to Bemus Point, Forrestville, and Mayville, the boys never quit scrapping until the final whistle. The Panthers will have 17 lettermen back for next year, so the outlook is anything but gloomy. The loss of Coach Owens, will be sorely felt, but newcomer Arlan Barber should have a good nucleus to build a good season. .6 or 'QQ O45 NP Q ,603 'oil OO Q Q, N 5 A Q 5 Q SSS? 6 3 ROW Tl-YO: J. Mitchell, Varsity Ba k tb II The citizens of Panama may well be proud of the 1957-58 basketball Panther. At the start of the R. llowe, A, Pomeroy. season, pre-season poll experts rated the Panthers no better than fifth in the southern division. But, to no surprise of the two coaches and players, Panama began to win these games to which we had not even been given a chance. At the close of the first semester Panama's record was nine wins and five losses, including some of the non-league games. ,Tim McElrath, who was a college basketball star himself, took over at semesters, and the Panthers kept right on winning. At the close of the Southern League, Panama was in second place and good enough to represent Chautauqua County in the Class C playoffs , After defeating Pine Valley in the inter-county playoffs and Ellicottville in the Bi-county playoffs, the Panthers met Sherman for a third time at South- western to determine which team would go to Buffalo. Although Panama lost 62-56, the boys gave a good account of themselves not only in this game, but for all the games during the sesson. Coach lyicElrath will have six returning lettermen, including Tom Rowe, leading scorer, and Chuck Ixlanwaring, his playmaker, next season. This year's Panama team went further toward the sectionals than any team in the history of P.C.S. No wonder the people in Panama can't wait 'til next year !!! Much credit is certainly due to Mr. Mc- Elrath whose skillful guidance will he remembered, especially by the Seniors on Varsity, Dick Ed- wards, .lrden Casler, and Eugene Widrig. f it it 1 a t ,f f Panama ' Ripley 47 Panama 51 Ripley 35 Panama Mayville Panama 62 Mayville 39 Panama Bemus Point Panama 66 Bemus Point 815 Panana Frewsburg Panama 61 Frewsburg 59 Panama Chautauqua Panama 70 Chautauqua 67 Panama Sherman Panama 74 Sherman 77 Panama Clymer Panama 67 Clymer 6:2 PLAY-OFFS Panama Pine Valley 159 Panama Ellicottville 42 Panama Sherman 62 22r5 .. 5,vi,3,g,,: ,,, .,f.gN-V+.. ,f.-.v:...2-.. ,xg--,-,L:Qj:??v:5r7?1 -.:,-2,1- -LA-.-.-,W -,.f...,,.g:1hjtg ,5. . -5 - - Tu -I ' ' ' ' ' +1-Lg:-51.113, g1,.:f:-1-f--nfvv --A 2,2245-.,x,55.f,15:-,-eq.-ffff,,gq:5gg::,qgilg -1---7pi,,5 '-W i,,.ci,g, -1 'L r,L.Y-.-g.-,ggxx: --,i-,:,-,,:,- .x..,,.-.- ',:. ,.-,5 1 E - T , ' ,- K , v .
