Forty thousand people joined in the Gold Rush during 1849 and these were known as the 49 ers. In commemoration of this great event we, the Seniors of 1949, have chosen 49 ers as the theme for our Panama Rocket. Z J! I . WJ -H. A Nigga -.. V, :N A l A ' an R 'J ! M mu :I aw, in. Standing: Mrs. Van Casler, Miss Esther Shafer. OFFICE STAFF THE heart of any school system is the office and the doctor who keeps the old ticker ticking is the principal. Mr. Nelson Green, Panama Cen- tral's principal has plenty of bpth patience and patients. The student body often seems to be taking a turn for the worse. Often Doc Green must administer a shot in the arm, a little gO0d friendly advice, or a kick in the posterior, figuratively speaking of course. To aid in taking care of the patient we have Mrs. Gertrude Casler, better known to many as Gert',. Her job is recording vital statistics of the patient, taking care of correspondence and making herself generally useful. Miss Ester Shafer has charge of the patient's financial affairs and here the income does not always correspond to the outgo much to her disgust. Miss Rita Cronin can be found every morning waiting patiently for the absentee list from the various rooms to come in so she can make out her vast list for the day. CLASS HISTORY In 1937 when first we started school A goodly number were we Of that number are left only two They are Beverly and Hugh. And in grade twfo in the year 1938 No new members came to share our fate. But during the year 1939 Lawrence Yager, Carl Johnson and Dick Dole joined our line. In grade four, four new members in our class we see They are Lorraine Johnson, Betty Whittier, Charles Lord and Dan Clancy. June Fuller joined in grade Hve, She decided to make the crucial dive. In grade six we remained the same No new members came to increase our fame. In grade seven we hear a new voice It belongs to none other than our tall mannerly, red head Joyce. We finally reached grade eight Then Bob Johnson and Dick Faulkner found the bait. And so in June the history book recorded another date, Elementary school was through and from it we did graduate. And in grade nine We received the sign, We were in high school and couldn't tarry, When along to our class came Martha and Mary. In 1946 in grade ten, we added to our class roll, Phyllis Hillyer, Russell Smith and Norman Kohl. In ,47 in grade eleven we added twgo mor to our list, They are Minniebell Perkins and jamesilallquist. In our Senior year we again put out the welcome mat And as you all probably know, along came Pat. We have now reached the time we have worked for , On wings of knowledge we've tried to soar! Ond so again the history book records a new date Our school days are nearly finished and from the institution we will soon graduate. So as we are nearly ready to take our place in the world, We hope to keep our knowledge always unfurled. SENIORS QSNAPSHOTSJ 1. Future Hoimemakers: 2. Lawrence: 3. Bob: 4. Jim: 5. Hugh: 6. The play was a comedy which was enjoyed by all. Aunt Sarah QBetty Whittierj Went to Jerusalem for a vacation. She left her darky cook Cjune Fullerj who was very superstitious, in charge. Muggsy, a learned Latin scholar QCarl Johnsonj , was to teach Latin to Pete CDick Dolej. In lorder to watch their girlfriends, Pete and Bill fDan Clancyp, rigged up as servants and rented the house to Mrs. Clarkston CLorraine Johnsonj and her two daughters, Peggy CMartha Johnsonj and Nadine CMary Cablej. They tricked Muggsy into play- ing along with the game so they wiould not report his girlfriend, Malvina CMinniebell Perkinsj. Dean Munglethorpe QLaurence Yagerj a very timid soul, Muggsy's uncle, looked in feeling very confused about the whole thing. The whole play was very amusingly presented as Pete and Bill try to keep John Boliver, a wealthy banker CBob Jiohnsonj and Dupont Darby, a poet Uames Hallquistj from making love to their girls. We wish to thank Mr. Pegan, and Mrs. Johnson as Well as anyone else who helped make the play the brilliant success it was. -J. In the midst of nature's wonders Here they settledvmade their homes- Here their children found the beauty In each canyon cut through stone. Then the white man found these wonders Soon the village became a town, And many came there by stage coach To this place, of great renown. As the village grew in numbers There arose a need for a school And a log house was erected For the 3 R's and the Golden Rule. Misfortune, fire and lack of funds Made learning a great chore But these people never faltered Only sacrificed some more. Now that our present school is modern Teaching all the finer arts Each child chooses his profession And each lesson plays its part- ln shaping up his future- Whether commercial, science, math,, Whether music or vocational All help him on his chosen path. Then when commencement time is o'er And seniors say Good Bye They'll ne'er forget the lessons They have learned at Panama High. And when they journey far away And see other wonders of this earth They can boast of all the beauties ln the village of their birth. Of the mammoth caves and rocks And crevices filled with snow. And they can tell how their village Got its name from Panama Joe. -A Friend. 43 I saw, in dream, a pile of gold, Its dazzling radiance poun' No more my visions are of gold Alas! my hopes are ore. The three-act comedy was en- joyed by all who attended. As the curtains opened, Nora Malone CMabel Cooperl, the Irish maid, was entertaining her Irish policeman sweetheart, Tim McGrill CElmer VanderKooij. Larry Elliott CRichard McEntaferj whose life was saved by an Ozarkian hillbilly, was forced to take as his ward, che hillbilly's daughter, Charlie Cjane Manwaringj . As this was the only name he received, he took the child to be a boy. He was highly surprised when he saw that Charlie was a girl. She was accompanied by Uncle Aleck Twiggs, fBob Davisl her father's partner. Ted Hartley CEd Daytonj , Larry's college friend, added highly to the amusement by his witty manner. Larry's aunt, Mrs. Farnham fArlene Kentj refused to keep Charlie and made Uncle Aleck the butler. Vivian Smythe-Kersey fElnora Geasmanj, Larryls fiancee, also hated her. Mrs. Smythe-Kersey fHazel Michaelj, Vivian's mother was a society lady who was very high toned. Mortimer Smythe- Kersey QRichard Silvasl was a society man who was always bored. In the third act Charlie came back to the Elliot home on her eigh- teenth birthday and showed them she was really a lady. After a pro- posal from Ted and Mortimer, she finally married Larry. Future Farmers of America THE thirty-one members of the Panama Chapter of the Future Farmers of America, have enjoyed a successful year under the direction of our Advisor Mr. Donald Dix. The Chapter chose the following officers to represent them for the year: President Hugh Wootl, Jr. Vice President Richard Faulkner Secretary . Charles Lord Treasurer Frederick james Reporter . .Norman Kohl Sentinel . . . . Thomas Smith The fourteen chapter members who were winners in last year's activity contest enjoyed the trip around New York State. The major points of interest were Ausable Chasm, Howe Caverns and the Thou- sand Islands. This year's trip will be to New York City where they will take in the major points of interest. This year our club is raising funds by the sale of Christmas and Greeting Cards, and we are again under Contract for the sale of Robson Seeds. We are also planning scrap drives for the near future. 59 'W I am a happy miner, I love to sing and dance, I wonder what my mother would say If she could see my pants. VARSITY BASKETBALL THE Panama Panthers won ten of their sixteen games in 1948-1949 for a creditable showing on the hardwiood. For the first time the team won the Class C honors in league play and advanced to the county finals. In addition the boys set a new scoring record for the school, out-pointing last year's quintet which held the previous high mark for a seasonls total. On the debit side, this year's team was weaker defensively than a year ago and was not as consistent as might have been wished in maintaining their best form. However, even when the team lost, the opposition usually had a busy evening on their hands. Two defeats were suffered in overtime struggles, another loss was by one point, and a fourth setback was by a narrow two-point margin. While the Blue and White did not accom- plish quite all that team supporters hoped for, yet over a two-year period Panama had a better won and lost record than any other Class Cn school in the County. JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL EXPERIENCE was again the item stressed on the Junior Varsity basket- ball squad during the 1948-49 season. An average of twelve players saw action in each game throughout the season. The starting five consisted of Wally Seeley, Cliff Reardon, Don Hamilton, Elmer Vanderkooi and Lowell Green, for the first game. After the Hrst game the starting lineup varied considerably. Dick Silvas, Rush Chapman, Fred James, Dan Nagel, Ross Abers and Dick McEntafer all saw cionsistent action. The Junior Panthers won their first game by taking the Chautau- qua junior Varsity by a score of 39-2. After that they met stiffer opposi- tion but showed much fight. The experience gained by the entire squad should provide better varsity material for coming years. 64 5 , .ff M gig at PWM lim-k row tlvft to Tilllitl-'-ATil'llll' Hailey, Charles Dole, Joe Edwards. PANAMA JUNIOR HIGH PANAMA Central School's Junior High basketball team had a perfect year, going through the season undefeated with twelve straight victories. The Panther Cubs won the Western Junior High League over Clymer, Sherman, and Ripley, and in other games against junior high opposition defeated Southwestern, Mayville, Bemus Point, and Forestville. Scoring 430 points to 170 for their opponents over the season, the team had an average victory margin of better than twenty points per game. Their winning streak continued from last year was extended to Hfteen straight. In two years, the squad, with very nearly the same personnel, won twenty-two games and lost one. The members of the squad who saw the most action included Bill Sard, Don Kent, Cliff Sweet, Dick McDowell, Joe Edwards, Charlie Dole, Dur Swanson, and Don I-lpsier. Other squad members who played in a majority of the games were Jack Brown, Bud Yager, Rog LeRoy, Ken johnson, and Dennis Wares. Don Kent and Bill Sard led the team in scoring. Cliff Sweet was elected honorary captain of the team at the close of the season. 4 Panama 28 Mayville Panama Sherman Panama 43 Bemus Point Panama Mayville Panama 24 Southwestern Panama Ripley Panama 65 Ripley Panama Clymer Panama 37 Southwestern Panama Forestville Panama 26 Clymer Palnalmll Sherman Q- Back row fleft to right?-Coach Erb, Hugh Wood, Richard Mac Entafer, Norman Kohl, Carl Johnson, Elmer Vanderkooi, Wallace Seeley, Donald Oviatt, Dan Clancy, Richard Dole, Clifford Reardon, Donald Hamilton, Charles Lord, Rush Chapman, Robert Johnson, Fred James, Ross Abers, Richard Faulkner. FOOTB LL THIS year the football squad consisted of ten returning lettermen, Bob Johnson, Norm Kohl, Richard Dole, Don Oviatt, Clifford Reardon, Dan Clancy, Charles Lord, Carl Johnson, Elmer Vanderkooi and Hugh Wfood. Due to minor injuries the Panthers were usually without one of the first six. Only one victory was registered during the year but in many of the games the Panthers would be leading at half-time and then would fall back in the late minutes. Richard Dole was elected honorary captain and Rus Smith served as manager. VARSITY CHEERLEADERS THIS year we had five cheerleaders, four of which were on the Junior Varsity last year and the other a Varsity cheerleader from last year. They are as follows: Martha Johnson, leader Jane Heslink Mary Ella Cable Jane Manwaring Lois Sweet Our uniforms were partly new. We used the blue wool skirts of last year's j.V.'s and added blue wool boleros to match. On each bolero we embroidered a panther head. Our outfit was completed with white rayon blouses and white moccasins. The cheer we most enjoyed doing was Call The Doctor. Miss Cronin, our faculty advisor, helped us very much. She was responsible for many new cheers. 68 IU ICR VARSITY CHEERLEADERS Lorraine johnson, leader Minniehell Perkins Patsy Cochran llnnice Green Betty Graham THIS group started out ll very successful season with a winning team to cheer for and new uniforms to cheer in.
