'N ANNE TRIPPLEHORN Editor-in-Chief and JERE TEED Business Manager Wk - W., avg-, Y. I X 'Q-, Space stations, satellites, rockets, guided missiles, cosmic rays . . . Although these are fast becoming everyday household terms, they are still closely related to the future. As Leibnitz, the German mathematician, put it, The present is great with the future. For this reason the staff of the 1959 HAR- VESTER has chosen the future and what it holds for the theme of your 1959 yearbook. Space travel once seemed possible only to dreamers and storytellers. But, in recent years, scientists actually have shot rockets into space. Rocket engineers base their plans for space travel on the law of science. Some of these scientific principles were first described by Sir Isaac Newton more than 250 years ago. A rocket zoomed into space for the first time in 1949. In that year the WAC Cor- poral, an experimental rocket, rose to a height of 250 miles. In 1957 the first earth satellites were launched. From then on space travel and the future have become general topics of conversation. Because mice are so often used in experi- mentation, we have adopted a mouse to guide you through our book.
