This year the staff chose Student Gov- ernment as the theme for our yearbook, because our school was elected president of the Texas Association of Student Coun- cil. In order to carry out this theme through- out THE HARVESTER, we have compared some of our campus activities with paral- lel departments of our national govern- ment. In doing this we hope we have em- phasized the important role student gov- ernment plays in our school life today. Joy Moore, Editor and Harvester Staff . 5 , . Just as the United Nations functions as a focal organization in solving world problems, Pampa High Schoo1's Student Coun- cil is the P.H. S. governing body that is concemed with problems and affairs of the school and its students, and in promoting good will among other schools through the Texas Association of Student Councils. Marion Stone, representing Pampa High School as president of Texas Association of Student Councils, and Mrs. Ruby Capps, P.H.S. Student Council sponsor, plan projectsto be discussed at the state convention, which was held in Denton March 25-27. 6 DEDICATION Last year the Student Council of Pampa High School was elected President of Texas Association of Student Councils for 1954-55, after serving that year as vice president. Few people realize the hard work these students have put into the task that goes with such an honor. The Student Council has done a great job in goveming our student body, above all their project of organizing Student Councils in towns that do not have them. Considering this and their many other achieve- ments, we, the staff of the 1955 HARVESTER, ded- icate this yearbook to the Student Council and to the future students of Pampa High School who will carry on where they left off. . - an ,af I fi R N if 6 My if v Q. -S ,iv Q 'M' .a-nn.,-b 'Vi' , 41L 3'h 131255 if Jin 'X 'i' 1' Q I? Clubs have gaily-decorated booths, from which they sell cotton candy, stage cake walks, call bingo games, or provide other entertainment. The best booth is awarded a S5 prize. Highlight of the even- ing is the crowning of the Carnival Queen. Each person pays a nickel a vote, and the candidate with the most votes becomes queen. She is crowned in the auditorium, and with her court is entertained by talented P. H. WILKINSON OIL PROGRESS QUEE Recognizing the oil industry, so much a part of the life of the Panhandle, Oil Progress Week was observed in Pampa for the second time this year with a colorful parade and election of a PHS girl as queen. Brunette Carol Paxson was the choice of the judges this year. She was picked from six girls and crowned by Mayor Tom Rose. In addition to enjoying special privileges and honors during Oil Progress Week in Pampa, she received an expense- paid trip to the State Fair in Dallas. Oil field trucks and equipment, interspersed with marching bands from PHS and other schools in the area, formed the procession. The queen nominees rode in convertibles. Carol Paxson, senior, was named Oil Progress Queen for 1954. She's the second Carol to wear the floral crown, inheriting it from last year's queen, blonde C 3l'O1 Foster. After riding through town in flashy convertibles as part of the Oil Progress Week parade October 13, six nominees for queen anxiously awaited the decision of the judges. Stand ing on the platform between the City Hall and Courthouse, are the six candidates, Joan Robertson, Pat Reynolds, Queen Carol Nancy Moore, Anita Wedgeworth, and Rhona Finkelstein. Mary Rogers, sophomore, stands in front of the Harvester bonfire after being crowned, Miss Flame, by Student Body President, Ben Sturgeon. MISS FLAME This year for the first time, in addition to the traditional burning of Sammie Sandie, Miss Flame was chosen by the student body to light the bonfire, For several years on the night before the Amarillo grid contest, Harvester boosters have lit a giant bonfire on which a dummy dressed to resemble a Sandie football player is burned. Wearing red sweaters and skirts, the five other candidates in the Miss Flame contest pose with their pompous in front of the high school. They are Marchetta Hall, Carol Foster, Glenda Dudley, Nancy Harrison, and Joan Robertson. 1 'ff' Forming the fighting H are P.H.S. cheer- leaders: Carol Henry, DeWayne Maddox, Larry McWilliams, John Jones, Pat Reynolds Nancy Moore, and center, Jo Tooley, head - Cheerleaders wave pompoms as they model their new rally coveralls.
