LN ii ii ' .. of 1959 The morning of September 2, 1947, was a very memorable one for 35 children, most of whom comprise the graduating class of 1959 in Palouse High School. It was the first year of their 12 year journey through school. The teacher that first year was Miss Anderson The year of 1948 brought this group to the second grade where they met Mrs. Swafford, their teacher for that year. The big event of the year was the rhythm band. Six new faces appeared in the class that year. They were Pat Let, Douglas Lilliby, Sandy Hollums, Rex McGregor, Barbara Maxey and Jack Bippes. Our third grade teacher was Mrs. Walker. She impressed the class greatly with stories of her stay in a Japanese concentration camp in the Philippines in World War II. Lost to the class that year were Sandy Hollums, Barbara Maxey, Jerry Deakin, Doug Lilliby, Pat Let, Dean Wilson, Sammy Yarnell, Laverne Moore and Patty Ann Juran. Alan Turner was welcomed as a new member to the class. Mrs. Wicks assumed the chore of teaching us in our fourth year of school. New stu- dents that year were Donna Wasson, Ronnie Brantner, Marvin Peterson, and Ronald Coch- ran. We said good-by to Roberta Frazer, however. When we walked in the door of our fifth grade room in 1951, who should greet us but Mr. Tremblay. This was a very busy year and music was added to our curriculum. We said farewell to six students that year. They were Jim Bittick, Ernest Muir, Donna Wasson, Marvel Cooper, Roberta Frazer and Dennis Wilhelm. New pupils were Lawson Chase, Gordon Lindbloom, and Robert Lee. In the sixth grade we had the experience of having two teachers. Mr. Pruitt started the year but was soon called into the Air Force. Mr. Howard then became our teacher and led us for the remainder of the year. With the coming of Lei Lani Hard and Pat Ray- mond there were 24 pupils in the class at the completion of the year. Mr. Coble, Mr. Parks and Mrs. Crimmins were our seventh grade teachers. A trip to the W. S. C. Museum was the high point of the seventh grade. Lost to the class were Marvin Peterson, Braunda Lazelle and Joyce Thompson. New members who were wel- comed into the class were Don and Janice Colburn, George Decker and Valerie Brown. In 1954 we had finally reached the peak of our power in grade school society. Little did we realize that the next year we would just be lowly underclassmen. Mr. Parks and Mr. Coble were our eighth grade teachers. With the loss of Byron Turnbow and Judy Maxey and Valerie Brown and the gaining of Robert Sturtevant the graduating class was 24 strong. The next year we started on a somewhat new experience. This was the beginning of our high school years. Mrs. Unis was our class adviser and she helped us with the big event of the year, the Sophomore return party. Jean Fisher was our carnival queen can- didate. A sad point in the year was the death of LeRoy Jack in a boating mishap on Lake Pend Orielle. We entered out sophomore year feeling far more experienced and showed our enthu- siasm by electing our queen candidate, Jane Humphreys, to reign over the high school car- nival. Mr. Holway was our class adviser that year which featured the freshman initiation. The loss of Robert Sturtevant and the coming of Judy Frost kept the number of the CLASS HISTORY - Continued class at 22. Our junior year was highlighted by the presentation of the class play, Night of January 16th. Another memorable event was the Junior Prom which proved to be quite successful. Mr. Parks was our class adviser and did much to aid us in these two activi- ties. Dona McKinney was our carnival queen candidate. On the morning of September 2, 1958, twenty students started their twelfth and last year of this journey through school. Our senior adviser was Mr. White and events such as the senior play, senior sneak and the carnival made the year very exciting and full of activity. Jean Fisher was the Fair Queen candidate and Patsy Redman and Jane Humphreys were her princesses. Bonnie Bidle was the carnival queen candidate. Gordon Lindbloom and Janice Colburn, who moved to Spokane and Priest River, respectively, were lost to the class on this most memorable year of all. Students who have gone the 12-year journey together are Dona McKinney, Jean and Jane Humphreys, Patsy Redman, Mike Mahn, Karl Chase, Ralph Moore, Jerry As- kins, Robert MacPherson and Joe Hulett. Dona and Jane were on the welcome committee. The reunion was held in the city park of Palouse. First to arrive were Mr. and Mrs. Ancel Jeffers, the former Jean Fisher. She was hard to recognize at first for her five children were crowded around her. We sat down to find out what some of our old classmates had been up to. Jeanne said she had graduated from business school. After she and Ancel married they settled down in the city of Palouse. A question arose about Ron Brantner and what he was doing now days. Jeanne said that Ron was a janitor at Regents Hill. That he was the same old Ron, just couldn't get away from those girls! As noon hour approached but who should appear--Mike Mahn. You could always count on Mike showing up when food was on! Mike said he had been making plans for the construction of a huge building in New York City and that he saw Pat Raymond the other day in New York. She said she was sorry that she couldn't attend the reunion. She had a job modeling on the Bob Cummings show and had to go to rehearsal. Most of our classmates had arrived so we decided to eat. There was much conver- sation at the table and we heard the name Jerry Askins mentioned. He was sitting near us and was telling about his big ranch. He had 1, 000 acres of land and was really roll- ing in the dough. He had traded his '54 Chev. in for a '79 long sleeky black Cadillac. Yes, Jerry had made an enormous change since the year of '59. As we looked across the table, there sat Lei Lani Hard. We commented on her lovely hair style. She told us that Bonnie Bidle had done her hair in the Miss Bidle Salon in Spokane. She said Bonnie was kept busy with her own business now. Lei Lani has been working for the Ford Motor Company keeping books. While we ate we learned that Karl Chase was unable to attend because he had been the first to reach the moon and hadn't come back yet! He has become an outstanding scientist and has won the Nobel Prize for being the first to reach the moon. Everyone finished dinner and things were picked up. Everyone was so full after that big dinner that we just sat around and talked. Ralph Moore asked me what Jean and I had been doing. I told him that Jean was working for her husband in Spokane. She is his dental assistant. She wasn't able to attend for they are gone on a cruise to Hawaii. As for me I am working in Seattle. I gave up my carrer as a dental assistant and I'm now teaching the second grade in Lincoln School. Ralph said he was kept very busy on the Nickobob murder case. His law office is on 21st, Avenue, New York. He told us to come anytime if we wished his services free of charge. Patsy Redman told us she has been launching a huge campaign C1ean Up The Slums. ' She is a very active social worker in the state of Washington. Just then Ron Cochran and Don Colbum came breezing in. They apologized for being late but it couldn't be helped. They had to run in the 500 mile race in Indianapolis. They failed to win but it was a thrilling experience. Ron was the driver of their car called Bird Dog. Don was his assistant. George Decker wondered what I had been doing. I told him that Iwas kept very busy keeping house for Bill, and watching our six little angels. George said he had a garage on 42nd and North Hollywood. Boulevard. He really enjoyed his work because he got to service all the actresses' cars. He even baby sits with their poodle dogs while they go shopping. Then we heard a very heated argument going on between Joe Hulett and Jack Bippes They were discussing the variety of wheat. It seems as though Joe Hulett owns a large ranch outside of Palouse. While Jack owns a ranch outside of Tekoa. Both are very suc- cessful farmers. We heard someone talking about boats. This made us think about Lawson Chase. Lawson is making the Navy a career. He was unable to attend because he is off on a six-month assignment. After a delightful day at this reunion Robert MacPherson told Dona and I to be sure and have a write- up in his paper. Robert was now the publisher of the Palouse Republic and had subscribers in four different states. Everyone departed glad that they had seen and heard about their old classmates. Another reunion was planned to be held in 1989. THIRD ROW: L. Chase, J. Askins, G. Decker, K. Chase, M. Mahn, R. Cochran, R MacPherson, R. Moore, D. Colborn. SECOND ROW: Mr. White, J. Humphreys, P. Zoqltate me Jack Bippes and Joe Hulett Jane Humphreys and Lei Lani Hard MIKE MAHN, Manager ARDEN SMITH, Assistant Manager Manager, Mike Mahn, reports the an- nual high school carnival was a success again this year. The carnival eamed around S550 for the student body. Of this amount, S94 went to the annual fund to help in the pro- duction of the yearbook. About seventeen dollars went to the classes and the remainder went into the Associated Student Body Fund. A large crowd was on hand to watch Kathie Evans, last year's carnival queen, crown her classmate, Karene Amdt, queen of the 1958 carnival. The contest was not decided tmtil the last minute when a strong challenge by the seniors in behalf of their candidate, Bonnie Bidle, had to be met by the supporters of the sophomore candidate. The fresh- man candidate was Toni Patton, and the junior candidate was Beverly Dill. Following the crowning of the queen, the prizes were awarded. Mrs. Everett West won the door prize, a turkey. Emmert Davis won the set of dinnerware, and Mrs. O. J. Hill was the winner of the camera. The students wish to thank the community for their fine support in making this year's car- nival a success.
