There were twenty-nine students in the second grade. A surprise party was given by Mrs. Swafford. In the third grade Mrs. Humphreys had all the students enter a contest on writing jingles about soil conservation. The winners won money and a trip to Spokane where they read their jingles over KHQ. Mrs. Tina Wilson rounded up all the scampering children for the fourth grade. The play, The Golden Goose, was given. Mr. Kerns taught us square dancing and we were in a square dancing program. In the fifth grade Mrs. Ina wilson, the director of our speaking choir, took us to Thornton to the Declamation contest. Virginia Barr entered and placed third, After six years of school, we planned a surprise birthday party for our teacher, Mr, Neal with nineteen pupils attending. The seventh grade was a year with many activities. Quite a few of the boys were on the basketball team and Marlene Cox was one of the cheerleaders. On Stage America was spon- sored by the American Legion Auxiliary and many from our class performed in it or the talent show. Marlene Cox won one of the prizes. The last year of grade school there were sixteen pupils. The teachers were Mr. Parks and Mr. Coble. Virginia Barr, Roberta Chase, Randy Perkins, and Douglas Scoville entered a state and national contest, What America Means to Me. In the fall of 1954, twelve green Frosh timidly walked up the high school steps to meet Mrs, Muir, who was our advisor for that year. Mary Schwalbe and Jerry Griffin were our can- didates for camival king and queen. The sophomores initiated us with some help and later we gave them a return party. Our sophomore advisor was Mrs, Glunk. Roberta Chase was queen candidate for the carnival. We initiated the Freshmen and were given a party by them. Our class of ten put on the Junior play, Let Me Out of Here, and gave the prom, The Garden of Eden. Mr. Parks led us through this year of activity. Mr, Snyder was our senior advisor. Marlene Cox was the queen candidate for the carnival. Virginia Barr was queen candidate to the Palouse Empire Fair, Roberta Chase and Marlene Cox were her princesses. The seniors gave a class play, Around the World in Eighty Days. They enjoyed their sneak and graduated in the usual whirl on June third. Carnival The High School Carnival held on Nov. 15, 1957 once again proved to be a success. The prizes raffied off were a transister radio and a service for eight of Rogers Brothers silverware. The race among the queen candidates was very exciting with the high sales- men, Larry Coble, Roberta Chase, and Marlene Cox, doing much to support their class candidate. The highlight of the evening came when Kathy Evens was crowned queen with Marge Tinnel, Dona McKinney, and Marlene Cox as her princesses. A sum of nearly S600 was realized as funds which went into the As- sociated Student Body Treasury. Boys ' and Girls ' ROBERTA C., LARRY C., MARLENE C. Nick P. .S ,sa-f r A.,-t BASKETBALL MANAGERS Karl C., Wayne M, The Palouse Basketball team started their season with a real upset over St. Maries, an A class school, 53 to 39. December 7 the team went to the Whitman County Jamboree. We lost the first game 5 to 15 against Tekoa and won over Oakesdale 14 to 4. January 7 was the game that will be long remembered. The win over Rosalia in the last second, 47 to 45. Rosalia drove ahead at the first of the game but we had pulled ahead at the half 28 to 22. With three seconds to go in the last quarter we got hold of the ball and got time out. A pass into Joe and a quick shot from him won us the game as the buzzer sounded. Later on through the season we made our highest score of the season against Oakesdale 77 to 52, with all 12 of the team scoring. We upset Asotin and took St. Maries once again but were never able to beat Potlatch. Darn it. The team finished up third on our side of the county and we were ready for the County Tournament. The Palouse Farmers made a real good show in the tournament by beating St. John 52 to 50 for their first win. However, we were behind at the half 21 to 26 after having been behind as much as 11 points in the second quarter. The next game was with Rosalia the following night. The score by quarters went 15 to 18, 37 to 42, 47 to 60, and 70 to 55 with Rosalia always out ahead. Palouse then went on and played Tekoa next for the third time of the season. We were in the lead all the way with the score by quarters 12 to 9, 28 to 23, 45 to 43, and 62 to 53. This victory earned us the privilege of playing Rosalia for the fourth time, Only one position away from the Championship game. We were ahead in the first quarter but were unable to keep with them despite a last quarter effort. The game ended 45 to 55 and so ended the 1957-58 basketball season. if Sleeov?
