4 , M w ■ f i Excellence rewarded At the end of the students ' academic year, ceremonies were held to recog- nize those who have excelled in var- ious areas. The Presidential Academic Fitness Awards, the California Scho- larship Federation, and National Hon- or Society were awarded to those seniors with high grade point averages and commuinity services. The Senior Awards Ceremony named department and scholarship awards to graduating seniors. Supplement- 13

Spring sports excel The Boy ' s Varsity swim team had a very prodi five season. Although they ended up fifth in Bay League, they enjoyed the coaching of the new coach, Brian Weaver, who said, ' Due to lack of essential time, we didn ' t swim as well as we could have. ' Strong leadership was provided by Jay Elwell. team captain, who also placed fifth in the 50 yard freestyle in CIF. Good performances were also turned out by John Redd, Dave Dollar, Bob Li, Bob McCallum, Erik Nelson, and Dan Skagen in the Bay League finals, j The Frosh-Soph team had an excellent season finishing up by winning Bay League. During the season, strong performances were put out by Brian Boyle and Will Herndon in the butterfly events. Howie Redd also performed well all season by winning first in the 100 yard backstroke and second in the 200. Larry Rubin and Jay Hagan did well in the sprint and long distance freestyle races With a not-so great begining season. Girls Softball, has optimistic plans for the future. Palos Verdes will have a stronger performance from this time fowjrd, said Coach Alan King. They have played three strong games this year losing to Santa Monica (5-4), losing to West (4-2), and a very strong game against Rolling Hills losing (10-8). Palos Verdes is going to turn the program around, said King He added, With an enthusiastic JV team and plans for off-season plays in Softball leagues and with eight returning Varsity players, PV will dominate in the next two years Coach King feels that Denise Decarli ' s piching is improving tremendously. Decarli has been a starter for two years now Also, another star player is Abby Gleason for her ablity on third base. Once again, the Girls ' swim team has proven that good results come from a lot of hard work. For the third year in a row, the Varsity team captured the Bay League title. They also beat Lakewood, their first dual meet loss in 35 straight meets. Amy Thompson, Julie Rankine, DeAnne Twidwell, Jennifer Wiggington, Karen Ramirez, Lisa Goldman, Dee Ruud, and Tayna Mishell all contributed to the Sea Kings ' fifth place in CIF. Janet Ramirez was the senior nominee for athlete of the year. For the second year, De Anne Twidwell was awarded the Most Valuable Player. Lisa Goldman received the Most Improved and Lauren Fein was the Most Inspirational The Frosh Soph team were also the Bay League champions. Dee Ruud was awarded Most Valuable Player and Jcnneke Wilcox received Most Improved. Commented Head Coach Jean Myhre, ' ' There was so much team unity this year. The girls really worked together as a team and had fantastic results. This was a great way to end my five years teaching at PVHS and I will have many fond memories of the team. - ,:.■ ■ ' • »- - . Boys ' gymnastics club performed well under the guidance of Jim Mitchell during their first year. Their exhibition meet with the Girls ' team was enthusiastically received. 12-Supplement
