I 'a The Wight ?allA on Pa' 0 Uerdelt lima Campw THE NIGHT FALLS ON PALO VERDE'S MESA CAMPUS For the frontispiece of The Pirate of i958 we have chosen this magnificent night photograph of the Palo Verde College Little Theater Building, taken by Bert Watts, official Pirate photographer. This imposing edifice, is reminiscent of the stately Parthenon, in which the Greeks expressed their devotion to Democracy. Here were housed the Student Center, the Chambers of the Associated Student Council, the College Cafeteria, and the Little Theater. lt has been a true symbol of the democracy of American iunior college education in this Valley for a dec- ade. Within her walls, and outside in the bright sunshine of her green, many a worthy friendship has grown sturdier-and many a step forward in the field of common, everyday human understanding has been taken. Palo Verde leaves her beautiful home on the Mesa, not without some mis- givings. Memories of fine alumni, who studied within these walls come back to us. Their success in after life is an inspiration to us all-and a iusti- fication for our decade on the Mesa. ln those ten years many a worthy student has passed through Palo Verde, on the road to success. Evalina Brown, one of Palo Verde's first enrollees, studied hard, inspired and helped her teachers and fellow students, and went on to a career in Edu- cation. Armando Carrillo, twice elected ASB President went on to his Bachelorate at the University of Arizona, and has during recent years, served in the U.S. Army in Germany, where he has recently earned his Captaincy. Carl Davis, another exemplary alumnus, graduated in Mining Engineering, and is already Chief Engineer of the Eagle Mountain Mine- eleventh largest iron mine in the nation. George Mitchell, overcoming great personal obstacles, received his appointment, while still awaiting graduation here-to enter upon a career of Vocational Instructor to ln- dians, as an employee of the Federal Government. Let these four out- standing Alumni symbolize the scores of their fellows whose stories are iust as worthy of retelling here. We hope to transfer to our new campus at Blythe the fullness of the Palo Verde Spirit. lt has flourished here, and it has moved all of our Alumni to do fine things in our first decade. We build on what they did-to a greater tomorrow. And so Palo Verde says farewell to Her first home, on the Mesa, and min- gles her memories with those of the hundreds of young Americans, who in more troubled times, trained within these same walls-to go out into the Wide Blue Yonder for God and for Country. K PALO VERDE COLLEGE High on the mesa to the Northwest, Nestles the college we gave our best, Whose stirring songs and Pirate cheers Will follow us down through the years. Alma Mater, we shall strive toward fame, Ever faithful, bringing glory to thy name. The spark of knowledge you kindled here, Shall glow for freedom far and near. Tho' ivy doesn't climb yon sundrenched walls, Nor statuary rule your shaded halls, By spirit bond we hold to thee, Till Time shall meet Eternity. O'er shining hills to far purple shore, Treading the path trod by many before, We ask one thing of the Power above, May the echo forever be love, love, love! Love for our college colors, Blue and Gold, Fame to our Alma Mater's new abode. By trust and pledge we'Il spread the light, And make our brother's pathway bright! by Eleanor Pistole fr Jw . L2-9. In keeping with the times, this class has more Engineering, Math and Science maiors than any other such group since the founding of the College. Certainly it shows great promise to do Palo Verde proud, if-excellent undergraduate participation and spirit are any indication. The rugged spirit of the Western American pioneer has tamed the mighty River, and made the Desert know the fragrance of the rose. We pay tribute to our dauntless forbears who turned back the raging floods with mule- drawn fresnos and dynamite. We tip our hats to the men and women who stayed to build again, when every vestige of their early accomplishment was swept away., We do honor to all the Valley's pioneers, particularly to those who have lived to see the fruition of their handiwork-the fertile farms-the pleasant homes. Here where they faced desolation with foresight is their dream come true. The broad acres df lettuce, of cotton, of melons and of cattle are their monument. Here indeed they have made an oasis tor the American dream of education for service and happiness and democracy. 20 DUN HHL5 I' UN Presrdenf of fhe Assocraied Sfudenfs Honor S ociety Student Council ur - Q. After much consideration, the Council nominated William H. Hensey, Jr., for this award. Mr. Hensey has been a member of the PVC faculty since the founding of the College, teach- ing History and Sociology and related subiects. He has always been an outspoken defender of the Col- lege program in the Community, and a ready and sympathetic counsellor of Palo Verde students William Hensey receives the honorary title of Mr. Palo Verde from Beverly Carson, representing the Student Council. , throughout the years. s .. fji Qffi dff, were T 6' Fife. ejgf L f -fe dfyweee 4,1125 of ffffg L22-'ff Mgcgwel LJ f X 0 . re, I' 5- , is-LHIJX1 , t o . 1 , VU , fffrzrwosffeeeyc ss r 9 56k 'SV X Qqeen C'andidateA M 1 E 2 6 , X, I 1 A , 335' ri' if pi' gp d 0 LEFT TO RIGHT: Sue Souden Joan Buckelew Dolores Cordova Nan Collier Endsley Frieda Guess Carol Ball Home arming The Alumni of Palo Verde College, over the period of ten years now drawing to a close, have found their way into every walk of life. But they have not forgotten their Alma Mater. They have been instrumental in establishing the li- brary, they established two scholarships for graduates of Palo Verde High School attending the College. They spon- sor both fall and spring homecoming activities and they have enaugurated an alumni-college football game in the fall of 1957. All funds collected by the Alumni for their various activities are used exclusively for the support of the College program. Our Director has said that our Alumni are as active as many older four-year college groups, and that they have done an outstanding iob individually and collectively in supporting the Pirate program, both on and off campus. lt is only fitting that Palo Verde College salute the Alumni on the occasion of the Tenth Anniversary. Her popularity in college is reflected by her election as head cheer-leader-which is just an indication of the active part she takes in all school affairs. Nan is 18 years old, has black hair and brown eyes and stands 5'3 high. During the year she became the happy bride of Engineering Maior Ronnie Endsley. Special tri- bute should be paid to Pirate mentors Kentera and Sawaia, who were mainly responsible for the Pirate victories. Although playing against heavy odds, the coaches of Palo Verde developed a squad with the potential to defeat much bigger schools. Kentera cle- veloped some of the best backs in the conference, while Sawaia provided the conference with the one of the best forward walls. THIS could very well have been the motto of the Pirate athletic squads of 1957-1958. lt was a highly suc- cessful year for the never-die Pirates who, although taking runner-up spot to Oceanside in both football and basketball, proved themselves true sportsmen and gentlemen. ln loss, they were content to shake the hand of the winner and bow to their conqueror. ln victory they also showed sportsmanship and nat- ural poise in accepting their winnings. Under Coaches Kentera and Sawaia the Pirates dis- played one of the most deceptive squads on the grid- iron, as they soared to five straight victories before falling at the short end of a 33-12 score to Ocean- side, the Conference Champs. The Pirates displayed some of the stalwarts of the conference in Perry Hatfield, Carlos Rodriguez and William Mcllroy who made the All-Conference first team. They were followed by Ronnie Harper and Loyal Moore, who if made second team, while Bob Cory, Paul Arnold, Bob Maichel and Bob Lefebre were given honorable mention. The Pirates will have the potential to go all the way in 1958 despite the heavy losses of Hatfield, Ar- nold, Maichel, Todd, Fuller, Moore, Condes, Castaneda, Perez, Hamilton and Livingston. The Pirates will have twenty-one returning lettermen, which will help make it one of the toughest teams in the Conference in 1958. ln basketball the Pirates' success was attributed to hard work and determination in the face of their defeat in seven of their first eight games. Knowing that their material and ability were much better than the record showed, the team persevered and came back to be the only Conference contender againsst Oceanside. Under the tutelage of Wade Sawaia, the Pirates produced some of the best ballplayers in the conference. Leo Puebla, the team's leading scorer, combined his experience with that of Charles Story to give the Pirates their seasoned ballplayers. Bob Carter and Tom Skevington, The Yuma Jumping Beans, combined to con- trol the backboards throughout the season. The floor game was kept smooth and steady behind the Cousy- style of the Pirates' trio guards, Mario Ramirez, Filbert Ortiz and Bob LaPerruque. The bench was loaded with such stalwarts as Ronnie Harper, Manuel Rodriguez, Archie English and Richard Chiquete, all of whom showed promise of future greatness in PV hoop circles. ln baseball and track one thing was noticeable. The lack of interest proved to be handicap to the Pirates. Behind Coach Leon Wheeler the Pirate baseball squad displayed some fine players in Mario Ramirez, Art Parra, Manuel Rodriguez, Manuel Saenz, Leo Puebla, Bob Lefebre, Octavio Castaneda, Ray Phipps, Scott Foster and Loyal Moore. However, depth was needed. lt was hard to run a squad with only ten mem- bers. The Pirates did manage to wind up with a 5 wins-3 losses record for the conference play in spite of the obstacles. Coach Kentera was hampered by the same thing in running a small track squad. Kentera was pleased though with the 'fine showing of Bob Carter, Bob Maichel, Tom Friedman, Barry Close, Russ Livingston, Richard Pitts, Bob Villaverde, Ray Rodriguez and Scott Foster. The 1958-1959 sports calendar will feature a bright schedule in all four sports. The Pirates will have their work cut out for them against tough opponents and larger schools. However, 'Palo Verde rooters can be assured of a good sportsmanlike game and many victories with the prospective line-up. The outlook is bright with only a few of the current luminaries leaving because of graduation. The Annual Staff would like to wish the coaches of Palo Verde squads the best of luck in the coming year. Zan Q 1 SPUHTSMANSHIP FIRST PLEASE PATRONIZE OUR ADVERTISERS, PIRATES! The building was erected in 1918 to house Palo Verde High School, which had been estab- lished in 1914. The campus features a large lawned area, decorated by two great palo verde trees, whose annual display of golden blossoms calls attention to the beauteous source of Palo Verde's name. Most of Palo Verde's truest friends, and all of the disinterested experts who been consulted agree that our community college will rise to greater heights of service, as she occupies her new home. The new campus is geo- graphically in the heart of the community she is dedicated to serve, She will be easier of accesss to her students and teachers and more responsive to the desires of the citizenry in general, because closeness makes for better understanding.
