Queen Francis was escorted by Craig Lemons, senior. The royal court consisted of senior attendants: Lisa Lichtie escorted by Darrell McCor- quodale, Susan Harris escorted by Thomas Robertson and Angela Mor- rison escorted by Doug Butler. The junior attendant was Angie Jackson escorted by Rodney Olivarez. Sophomore attendant Terry Delgado was escorted by Chord Rhea. Following the game, the Student Council spon- sored a dance in the gym where the Queen and her date Randy Graves were honored. “Hard to say I'm Sorry by Chicago was the theme song for the '82 homecoming. 1 Homecoming mums are still a favorite tradition. 2 Queen Francis Dickerson and her escort Craig Lemons 3 Junior attendant Terry Delgado smiles for the camera . 4 Senior attendant Lisa Lichtie show off her mum 18 Reach for Opportunity — Seniors Tina Bailey Tonya Bailey Mary Baker Troy Baker Steven Barnes Arretta Bateman Reach for Opportunity — Seniors 19 1. A world in which anything can happen at any given time and place. This stage is set, there are dozens of palm trees with the gentle sea breeze smoothly finding its way through every leaf. This stage was also the setting for the presenta- tion of South Pacific, which was displayed by four very talented directors and a cast of approximately thirty-five students from the choral and drama departments. The lead actors and actresses were portrayed by Tim Tucker as Emile de Beque, Janene Langston as Nellie Forbush. Ginger Flaherty portrayed Bloody Mary and Jimmy English played the part of Lt. Cable — and Amy Hopkins as Liat. There were several other participants which made up the cast that performed this Rogers and Hammerstein musical, who were Carol Benson, Travis Askew, Miles Luper, Bubba Smith, Kerry Spinks, Anthony Cobbins, Duncan Ware, Tim Nevels, William Stanley. Nurses were: Tina Brown, Tonja duBois. Angie Green, Karen Quisenberry, Bell Bailey, Kelly Storey, Terri Patterson, Paula Rogers and Amy Hopkins. Rodney Olivarez, Paul Taylor, Steven Barnes, Donny Gerber. Thomas Stickrod, Patrick Horn, Justin Raef. Lynn Thurman, and William Stanley acted as sailors. Islanders were played by: Michael Jackson, Tracy Rankin, Lori Lewis. The choral and drama and music departments performed South Pacific December 1.2, 3, 1982. The masterminds behind the scenes who directed the students were: Patricia Latham, (Drama dept.), Dennis Trook (Choral Dept.), David Davis (Music Dept.), and Vance McSwain (Art Dept). The students rise, raise their hands high to the top of the gymnasium and start singing Singing glory to the Blue Singing glory to the White for we know our Palo Duro is forever in the right; Down the corridor of time in our hearts we will enshrine, our high school, our high school, we love,”! This one certain man is James E. Gar- rett. principal of Palo Duro for the last fourteen years. He first came to us at P.D. in 1969. He came from Travis Jr. Hg. where he was principal for eleven years. Prior to serving at T.J.H.. Garrett served half a year as assistant principal at Horace Mann Jr. High, then was prin- cipal at Mann for three years. Garrett taught at the former Nixon Jr. High School as a science and math teacher prior to his terms at Mann and Travis, which are fortunately Palo Duro's two feeder schools. Garrett says, Out of the twenty-nine years I have been in Amarillo, twenty-eight and a half have been in North Amarillo, and it has been a real thrill for me. I feel very fortunate to have served in both the feeder schools to Palo Duro. John Johnson Cheryl Jones Katrina Jones Stacy Jones Douglas Jimison David Katsanis 36 Reach for Opportunity — Seniors With Class of ’83 In the fourteen years that Garrett has given his services to Palo Duro. he says he has “seen the pendulum swing. He commented of the changes that he has seen over the years here. He mentioned that the students are more serious minded and know where they are going in life and what they want out of life. The students are also more conscious of their dress habits. They are neater and tidier. I don’t think it is just here at Palo Duro, but something that is seen all over the nation. Mr. Garrett, like Palo Duro itself, has seen many experiences. He has felt vic- tory and defeat, happiness as well as sadness, for they all come together. In his fourteen year term, Garrett has been principal, he says there is not one year in particiular that is the most memorable. He feels all of fourteen years have been special and doesn't think he can single out one as being more special than the other. But he does remember some more memorable events that happened at Palo Duro, such as in 1974-1975 when the varsity football team, headed by Coach Doug James went to the quarterfinals. Souvannaly Aticheal Kemp Shiela Kennedy Kandi Larry Kilgore Ricky King Kattavylayvong Khamvorgsa Reach for Opportunity — Seniors 37 Garrett, cont. In 1981-1982, the varsity football team won District 3-AAAAA. But Garrett is as concerned about academics as he is about athletics. I have always been in- terested in the academic area of our school. The individual and collective ac- complishments of our students year after year.” Such examples of academic ex- cellence at Palo Duro are ac- complishments which were achieved by Ricky Bustos in 1980-1981 when Ricky won second place in the CJ.I.L. state competition for slide rule. Also, that same year Ricky Bustos along with Doug Preston, went to the National finals for F.B.L.A. in Chicago. Needless to say Mr. Garrett is very proud to be a Don. He has been boosting spirit in this school by cheering the traditional Blue and White, being a member of the Booster Club, and taking active participation in such activities as Kiss-A-Pig.” Although this is Garrett's last year at Palo Duro, he will continue to be a part of the history at P.D. Next year in the mornings, teachers might not get to look forward to Gar- rett's announcements. Despite lengthy announcements, they will surely miss the routine evaluations that Mr. Garrett gave so quietly. He has seen twenty-nine classes pass through P.D.'s doors, in- cluding the students from his previous years at Mann and Travis. But this year Garrett himself will graduate with the class of '83. This will be the last year that Garrett will cheer as principal of P.D.H.S. and the last year to cheer on the Blue and White as Pappa G. It is in our hearts and in our dearest hopes and dreams that Garrett continue to be the kind and caring man we have all known him to be. In our last steps from Palo Duro, let us give thanks for having known and worked with such a special person. Mr. Garrett, from that crowded auditorium, on graduation night, we will sing to you: Singing glory to the Blue, Singing glory to the White, is forever in the right; Down the corridor of time. With increasing economy problems, more and more high school students are seeking training for specific jobs. Palo Duro students are doing this by enroll- ing in vocational classes. In these classes, students prepare for further education in the career field of their choice or for a fulltime job after graduation. Vocational classes at Palo Duro offer experience in auto repair, secretarial work, selling merchandising. and numerous other career fields. These op- portunities help students prepare for what they will do following graduation from Palo Duro. These classes have been very helpful to many students for many years. Susan Harris and Loyal Don Bill Hickey The cheerleaders attended camp at Panhandle Stale University in June for one week where they received the Spirit Megaphone, the Spirit Stick, three Superior ribbons and one excellent ribbon The most memorable of their activities was that first pep rally. Staying up at the gym until past midnight to get everything just right... practicing over and over to make sure that there were no errors .. And then the next morning at 7 a m . butterflies had overtaken their stomachs, according to one cheerleader. But somehow, when the light song began to play and the football team began marching out. everyone turned to each other, smiled and everything came together Homecoming in October was the biggest event for the Cheerleaders Even though the doors were open the week before, it took every bit of that two weeks to prepare for it. Hanging posters at every football player s home, preparing the spirit chain and getting psyched up for the whole event. Through the year, the cheerleaders stayed busy preparing these pep rallies, practicing, painting posters, going to everything from wrestling to basketball and all in all supporting every and anything possible The cheerleaders have had a terrific year, even with the ups and downs of many different situations But without the support of the student body, their dream could have never come true, say the 10 spirited young men and women 1. The members gave some of their valuable personal time in order to make the re- quired deadlines. Also. Dianne Smith, the Publications sponsor, spent long hours on the newspaper and yearbook. Other students may wish to spend their time exploring the unseen elements of life or experiment with chemicals that have names as long as trihydroxypropane as do science students. Many other students may feel that English is just something needed to graduate, but it is a skill to find such things as adverbs and other parts of speech in a sentence that looks like it came from a see and spell” book. Punching keys and running figures on an adding machine may not seem rewarding, but many students plan their careers around such subjects as typing or accounting. Studying about people who died over 100 years ago or going over events which happened many years ago can be as ex- citing as counting the dots on the ceiling, but history has become a vital part of the education of a student. Palo Duro is made up of many classes, some required, some geared to the special interests of the many Palo Duro students. 1. Seniors learn the basics of economics from teacher Steve Camp. 2. The cheers! The glory! The Fans! The injuries. Approximately 150injuries plagued the 1982 football teams, by far this has been the worst season in- jury wise. Of the 150 injuries suffered by PDHS players. 63 were serious enough for a player to be put under a doctor's care. Some of these includ- ed five knee injuries requiring surgery, eight which did not require surgery, one dislocated elbow, one fractured eye orbital, three concus- l sions, one broken hand, one frac- tured ankle and one dislocated shoulder. The PDHS varsity suffered two serious injuries per varsity game for five straight weeks. The Dons played every game with all they had but with this many in- juries, it was hard to compete. The Dons lost four games by a total of 14 points and ended the season with two wins and seven losses but they never quit. 2 Grady Lisa Kenny Diane Phalcria Steve Vicki Jerry Marty Paula Michcal Williams Williams Williams Wilson Wilson Wilson Wilson Winn Witherspoon Wolf Word 86 Reach for Opportunity — Juniors •• • % • Gayle Mickey Lisa Intha Rick Anthony Robert Wood Woolsey Wright Yamdi Yarcer Young Young Reach for Opportunity — Juniors 87 Bottom Row: Danny Johnson. Some have reached for stars through involvement in the activities which surround us during the year. Reach for the Stars 187 188 Reach for the Stars Each of us has reached a star, or perhaps several, on the way to the biggest, brightest, most sought after stars — the stars of things to come. 190 Reach for the Stars i. No matter how many stars we reach, there's always one more, one that's brighter, one that seems more important. No matter how unattainable that star may seem, we will never cease stretching our hands ever outward toward that brilliant light in our future until we reach it at last. Reach for the Stars 191 If We but Reach for the Sometimes the world seems pretty bleak. We hear news about rising unemployment, high interest rates, high prices, strikes, plant closings, and the like. There are times when we feel the darkness will never cease. The 1983 Conquistador staff firmly believes that there is light, light provided by the stars. As long as we continue to reach for the stars, the brighter the light becomes. The stars in our future are out there, if we only look. It may take the determination to believe when others around us have given up hope. The times are hard, it is true. The world is changing and we are compelled to change with it. Yet even as we change, we must never lose sight of our goals, our dreams, our stars. The future is bright, if we but reach for the stars.
