Although we don’t play the familiar child- hood games like hopscotch, jacks or jump rope anymore, we find that we play the games of Every Day Life. Sometimes we don't even realize the different games we play, but they fill the minutes of our days at home, at work, at school and at play. We play games together. . . We play games by ourselves. 8 Games Keep Our Spirits High Lisa Gwyn. Nora Graves. Darlene Jones Games help our spirits soar to new heights by breaking the monotony of the day. They let our innermost feelings out. We learn to express ourselves through speaking, through actions and through writing. . . The games we play unite us by helping us to break barriers within ourselves and in our relationships with others. 12 --------------------------------------------------------- —-___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ We find that working together toward the goals of each of our games, we share the excitement, the glory, the pain, the sorrow. . . and we are all winners. 13 With high hopes for a winning season, the Palo Duro Dons began the 1977 season with a bang. Defeating Dumas soundly, 45-15, the Dons dreamed of a super sea- son, but it was not to be. Hereford inched by PDHS the following week, but the Dons bounced back to defeat Clovis and El Paso Coro- nado. But these were the last wins for the Palo Duro gridders. The following week, the Canyon Eagles walked off with a 7-0 win at PD's Homecoming. On Oct. 15 began a string of games which would mark only the second time in Palo Duro’s history that the Dons failed to win a single district game. The Rebels, the Sandies and the Harvesters all managed to put Palo Duro on the short end of the score. During the final game of the season, Palo Duro and Caprock battled to a 6-6 tie. Football, continued A Heartbreaking Season Although the 1977 season was a heartbreaking one for the Dons, prospects for next year are bright. Twenty-two lettermen will be returning, including eight offensive starters and six defensive starters. About the past season. Coach Ken Ozee made these comments: We lost five ball games by a touchdown or less. We were probably the best 3 • 6 - 1 team in America. We had a lot of bad luck in 1977. I was very proud of the great effort that our players displayed in the first eight games. We had some heartbreaking losses — 3-0 loss to Tascosa and the 17-14 loss to Amarillo High took a lot out of us. This page. Top: Darryl Wesley waits for a pass. Season Encouraging With a 4 - 2 • 2 season, the junior varsity football squad began the season with a slow start, but fin- ished strong, according to the coaches. The team won four of the last five games and tied Tascosa 14-14. THS won the city championship. The J.V. team closed out their season by defeating Amar- illo High 32-0. Coach Ed Smith blamed the poor season showing on lack of height and lack of shooting free throws. Leading scorers during the sea- son were Madeira Hardy! Deon Green and Tracy McClain. Second year Coach Jacky Bridges felt the team showed considerable improvement over last year’s team. Monte Allwein, senior, held all of Palo Duro's records in swimming and was a state qualifier. All- wein, basically a freestyler, competed using other strokes as well. The 1977 440 relay team ranked fourth in the nation, while the 1977 880 relay team was in fifth place. Promising team members included Sonia Bal- lard and Mary Demerson. 47 It was a rebuilding year for both the boys' and girls' golf teams. The boys’ team gained a new coach in Wallie Cayton who came to PDHS in the new health pro- gram. Girls' coach Gloria Cushen- berry said that her team was building depth for next year and named Sheila Ward and Linda Hurst as the team's best and most experienced players. Palo Duro offers a wide variety of courses for students. Included in the curriculum are courses in English, math, social studies, and science as well as electives such as art, music, drama, jour- nalism, photography, advertising, business, for- eign language and homemaking. Each person has a different role to play in life. Sometimes we like being ourselves, sometimes we wish we were somebody else. It’s all a game. One day this year, four students, Steve McDonald, Robby Brown, Shawn Moke and Gary Ivey, decided to be somebody else. Using makeup and publicity pictures of the rock group KISS, they attempted to transform themselves into the rock superstars. Their antics fooled a lot of people and they thor- oughly enjoyed one evening of being someone else. Spirit, wanted by all, needed by all, but achieved by few Whether it be screaming at pep rallies, getting involved in school clubs, taking part in sports or supporting the school as a whole, spirit can make or break a year. As we look back over the year, we see how each of us as individuals, contributed to the year of 77-78 at Palo Duro. Spirit, a game played by all, is needed to achieve the highest pride possible for our school. The 1977-78 Cheerleaders and Loyal Don must be com- mended on their long hours of painting signs, making locker favors, practicing for pep rallies and bringing the school together with their successful attempt to raise the highest amount of spirit possible. School would be very monotonous if there weren’t any clubs or organizations. Through club participation, students are able to travel to district convention. Clubs and organizations are one of the most enjoyable parts of school, the feeling of belonging and contributing. Groups were formed around areas of spe- cial interest, or with objectives of service or social entertainment. Not always the most exciting part of belonging to an organization, but very neces- sary to its existence and operation were the regular business meetings. With student officers presiding, members practiced parliamentary procedure as they planned money raising projects. Top Right: Future Teacher of America: Bottom row; left to right: S. Moore, S. Whether the time is spent playing football or frisbie on the school lawn, going to get a coke with friends, talking on the tele- phone, driving around, or just taking it easy, this special period is very important for relaxation. Games They become a part of our lives without our ever really being aware of them. They are so integrated into our personalities that we are made up of the games we play. Serious games. Silly games. They are what we are during our high school years. continue to play games years to come, but they will change as we change and we will play them with different people . . . 188 , f ';W • The games of 1977-78 are coming to an end. As the bell rings for the last few times and the lockers are cleaned out, we remember the games we played that made the year memorable. We tell our friends we’ll keep in touch as we leave PDHS for the last time, but we know we probably won’t. We tell our favorite teachers we’ll come back to see them often, but we know we may not be able to. For this, too, is a game we play. Ten years from now it probably won’t matter as much, but right now it hurts a little.
