Grant Amarillo, Texas 79101 ■Jt 20 YEARS In these 20 years that Palo Duro has withstood all the trials and tribulations that students could give it, we have started traditions, like Homecoming, a winning football team, high honors in other sports, and high academic honors of students. In this the 20th year of Palo Duro we have seen the Bicentennial Celebration, and high scholastic honors. This school will still be the top high school 20 years from now in the hearts of its many graduates. Competition 4 1 1 J 0 9tudent Life is many things at Palo Duro High School. Classwork is a major part of each day, but students always find time to relax with friends, to learn new things during assemblies, to just clown around. below left: Judith Ballard relaxes between classes. below: Ricky Andersen clowns with the camera. 12 top left: Sheila Williams laughs at a joke in class. Participation in sports and other extracurricular activities is very much a part of the lives of Palo Duro students. From long practice sessions on the football field to choir rehearsals is publications deadlines, each student found his or her particular niche. below: Keith Holloway finds that a detached head is better than no head as he clowns at Halloween. right: Tony Moore is ready for football practice long before sixth period. below right: Glen Blades takes a break from activities to rest under a tree. 14 rlchcarealJ Cl Shackelford directs choIr members during a Dunnv Wanda Worcesler finds that happiness really is a warm 15 lefl: Clenn Nickerson pauses during a hectic PRAIRIE SAGE left: Dexter Harper, Loyal Don, leads a cheer at a pep rally. top: Brenda Washington listens as a classmate asks a question. above: Melinda Houdashell explains a point in class. 16 Classwork takes up more of a student's day at school than any other activity. Reading, worksheets and tests become a way of life for nine months out of each year. Some classroom situations, however, offer a change of pace, which may account for the popularity of courses such as choir, band, orchestra, drama and art. top: Mrs. Nancy Moyer helps students with a classroom assignment. right: Karen Whitehead, sophomore, uses a copy of the school newspaper for an assignment in her first year journalism class. 17 Leisure Time is something many Dons never seem to get enough of, what with exams to study for, term papers to write and other homework to do. But when Palo Duro students did find time for leisure, their activities were varied - from just relaxing to attending athletic events to enjoying a game of pool. 18 above: A student finds time to reflect on a busy day. top: Tommy Thompson, senior, discovers that a game of pool can be very relaxing. far left: Barry Talley, senior, pauses between classes. top left: Sandy Koesjan, sophomore, finds an unusual place to relax - in a hallway window. bottom left: Randy Grant and Renita McGoffin stop to talk between classes 19 Senioritis reached epidemic proportions in the spring of the year when seniors began looking forward to Senior Day, the banquet, graduation and the all-night party. Two years removed from the confusion of being sophomores, and one year removed from the middlemen, or juniors, the seniors became special citizens when school opened in the fall. Classes and studying took up a lot of time, but thoughts turned to life after graduation, marriage, a career or college. To Palo Duro's seniors, it was a year of confidence with a touch of confusion, a year of happiness with a touch of regret, a year that will never again be experienced. right: Senior Greg Towner marches proudly into the gymnasium before one of the football pep rallies which honored him and other members of the team. below: Vicki Gibson, senior, had nearly completed requirements for graduation her senior year, but came to Palo Duro two days a week for an ROTC class. 20 top left: Senior Ken Ralston finds that even seniors are not exempt from studying. top right: David Pinales concentrates on a typing assignment. left: Senior counselor Joe Willoughby was affectionately nicknamed Poo- Bear this year, as evidenced by the sign on his window. above: Saundra Brewer studies for an exam in her photography class first quarter. 21 Home Life was something that affected all students at Palo Duro. For some it was just a stopping place to relax, to do homework, or to spend time on the phone. It was a place to go when we had gone everywhere we wanted to go and had done everything we wanted to do. But, still we were glad it was there because it was home. left: Urry Plumlee relaxes with a game of darts. opposite page: top left: Larry heads for the peace and quiet of his room. right: Private headphones offer Larry the solace he seeks. right: Mr. Joel Shackelford, choir director, shows members of the cast just how a song should be done. far right: Mr. Shackelford and Joyce Kendle, senior, go over some of the music used in '‘Oklahoma! It started with warm summer days, but soon came the cold winter winds. No matter what the weather was, the school days went on. The last of the warm afternoons were spent at Thompson Park or eating lunch on the school lawn. Cold windy nights were spent at Dick Bivins Stadium cheering on the football team. Finally as the weather once again turned warm seniors began thinking of graduating while juniors and sophomores looked forward to three months of rest. right: Terri Clements takes advantage of a warm fall afternoon. below: A group of students gathers outside the building between classes before the cold winds of winter take over. below right: Shirt sleeves are all that are needed most of the time in the early pan of the year. 26 top left: Jan Jennings and Diane Simpson enjoy sitting on the school lawn again as spring returns to Palo Duro. above: Tracy Downey discovers that lack of snow in the Texas Panhandle does not mean she can go without a coat during the winter months. left: A crisp fall afternoon finds members of the Palo Duro Don Band playing during a football game at Dick Bivens Stadium. 27 A Special Birthday was celebrated all over the United States during 1976 as the nation observed its bicentennial. The country as a whole looked back over the past 200 years since the nation's birth. There were celebrations and projects in every city and state. Amarillo's bicentennial project was the Discovery Center located at the medical center complex. 4 i 28 opposite page: top left: The American flag flies proudly over Palo Duro High School every day. right: 1976 was a special year for the football team, as expressed by Melinda Houdashell as she salutes the No. 1 ranked team in the district. bottom: An enthusiastic crowd was present at the many pep rallies. this page: top left: Go PD , a modern version of the Spirit of '76 . top right: Patty Hadaway leans against one of the red, white and blue trash cans decorated for the bicentennial year by members of the Key Club. bottom: It was a special year for Rhonda Felton who was crowned Homecoming Queen. The two mixed choirs, Los Comantes and Los Troubadors, worked hard this year with a new addition to the music department, 5th period girls' choir. The choirs performed in many concerts this year. They also represented Palo Duro at contest in a very fine manner. Individual choir members achieved many honors competing in region, area and state choir. This year Palo Duro was represented by Barry Talley and Larry Vanover at state. above: Second period choir performs in concert. left: Members of the girls' choir are directed by Mr. Joel Shackelford. opposite page: top: Los Comantes members performed at some of the local banks at Christmastime. far left: Kim Dixon and Barry Talley had the lead roles in this year’s musical, Oklahoma! right: Mr. Shackelford sings and directs. 33 34 Band, Orchestra High knee lift, good sound and rhythm were all that was heard this fall from the Palo Duro marching band. Then it all was over when they had marched their last half-time show. In the spring, both orchestra and band participated in Greater Southwest and U.I.L. contest. Then they were treated to a spring tour at the end of the year. Bowing, plunking, and right notes were just a part of orchestra students' life. They achieved many honors this year and Palo Duro was really honored to have such a group as this. this page: top left: Orchestra practices for a concert. far left: Mr. David Hinds shows some emotion after a long performance is over. left: Kim Dixson practices music for the state orchestra. bottom left: Sheila Williams stares over a long, hard day of work. opposite page: top: Orchestra members perform in concert. bottom left: Not only on the marching field but in the Band Hall the playing Dons practice hard. bottom right: Drum Majors Kenny and Randy Adams show excitement on a bus coming home from a football game. 35 Journalism Students were introduced to two new classes offered in the Publications department this year. Along with journalism, yearbook, and newspaper classes, students were able to take photography and advertising.
