Nicklaus, Glenda Allison, Helen Knight, Arline Lively, Norma Stitt, and Sue Stone. beginning a flew Zradit ion Palo Duro High School, in a physical sense, comprises five buddings and nine square blocks in the campus. Within the walls of these carefully planned buildings, the student will be taught the academic skills. This educational process, however, will go beuond the classroom procedure; it will be found in the extra-curricular activities such as music, speech, art, publications, clubs, school dances, and sfwrts. In order for a program of this type to be successful it will require the co-operation of not only the students themselves, but the cooperation of the entire community. It is impossible for a student to achieve full pleasure and fun in his school life if he does not have a thankful heart and a desire to serve his school. This spirit has already been shown by the fine cooperation of the student body in their response to the selection of a name and colors for the school. Dons was originally a title of honor in Spain comparable to our Mister. However, when the Spanish explorers came to the Southwest, the name became more of a title of honor. A person known as a Don usually was very wealthy and powerful. Thus, a Don was a person to be respected or feared as the circumstances called for. A Don ustially had a large number of men working for him and was very powerful in the Southwest. This name was submitted to a student committee bu Robert Echols, Barbara llisc, and Billy Dye because of its originality and dynamic quality. Anyone could suggest a name for this cause and many, many names were suggested. The committee, con- sisting of representatives from each class, screened the names to a minimum number to be voted upon by the student body. A student gave a short talk of each of the names and then the student body voted. In the same manner, the colors were chosen. Finally, after all the votes were counted, Palo Duro High School had a name and colors-royal blue and white; and the Palo Duro Dons were born. Thus through democratic means our team name and colors were selected by the majority vote in the student election. Everyone at Palo Duro High School is proud of the selection and hopes Amarillo as a whole will be just as proud. Humility .... Craciousncss .... Understanding . . . . These arc the virtues he tries so hard to instill in us. By his own life, he has taught us their meaning. We are proud to dedicate Conquistador ’56 to Palo Duro’s first principal. W. The Demons had 14 lettermcn returning while the Dons had onlu one player who had played with an A squad. With their experience and weight, the Demons spoiled the Dons' debut by a heart breaking pass for a touchdown in the last six seconds of the game to win 12-6. After their first loss the Dons traveled to Enid for their first and only win for the season. The Dons out-played the Plainsmen in all respects, but were really outstanding on defense. Enid was the first to score, but the Dons made two touchdowns in the last half to win 13-6. The Dons’ next opponent that proved to be a stumbling block was the Steers of Big Spring. Big Spring’s team had a group of hard running backs that were supported by a hustling, blocking line. The Steers went over for five touchdowns while the Dons got over for one in the fourth quarter to end the game 33-7. The next seven games do not show too much in favor of the Dons if you look only at the score. The Levclland Lobos won a game over the Dons 45-0, but the Dons certainly fought to the last second. The fighting Dons were matched against the Lamesa Tornadoes at Lamcsa. The Dons’ only touchdown came in the last 40 seconds of the game on a 33 yard jxiss, however; the time tan out with Lamesa 26 to the Dons’ 6. Next trouble sftot for Palo Duro was Monterey of Lubbock. The Plainsmen took a 43-13 victory over the Dons. Vernon came to Amarillo expecting an easy game over the Dons, but were really surprised. The Dons really hustled all through the game, but came out on the bottom 18-6. The Sntider Tigers, Class AAA state Championship con- tender, coasted to a cool 38-0 victory over the Dons. The Palo Duro Dons traveled to Plainview for their ninth game in history. The Bulldogs out scored the Dons 14-7. The last game for the first Palo Duro football squad was a heart breaking loss to Sweetwater. The Mustangs traveled to Amarillo for a 61-0 win over the fighting Dons of Palo Duro. Ten games plaued..........one game won..........no ties............and no losses. This is an impossible situation mathematically, but so true of the Dons’ fighting spirit! No matter how lopsided the score the Dons continued to fight. This outstanding trait has won them the title in the Panhandle of the fighting Dons of Palo Duro, a title they well deserve. They tried, and when that failed, they worked and then tried some more. Victory without an effort is hollow, but losing while fighting and working is a triumph. The entire student body backed Coach Reddell when he said “.........the Dons have never been beaten!’’ Harvey Brown, Back Finis Cavcnder, Back DEMONS SQUEEZE PAST DONS 12-6 The debut of the Palo Duro Dons was spoiled by the Demons of Dumas. The first game in the history of the Dons was dropped 12-6. Although the Demons had been picked to win over the Dons, it turned out to be a tightly played game. Dumas scored in the last six seconds on a desperation pass to win, but they have plenty of respect for the fighting Dons of Palo Duro. FIGHT, DONS, FIGHT! This was the cry of the Don rooters during the Dumas and Palo Duro game. Jimmy Cook, Back Donald Johnson, End Richard Boren, Guard LcRoy Pendergrass Royce Reese BIG SPRING ROLLS OVER DONS 33-7 The weight, experience, and speed were too much for the spirited Palo Duro Dons as Big Spring rolled to a 33-7 victory here Sept. 30. Palo Duro played a hard game but couldn’t match Big Spring. This was the first conference game for the Dons. OUT A’ THE WAY, BOY! is what Jerru Cannon (30) seems to be telling one of our unidentified players as Wesley Whitaker (82) and Don Whittenberg (72) come in to help. Winvett Trussell Wesley Whitaker CO, PAT GO! Pat Ashbum (10) races toward the end zone in the Big Spring game with plenty of elbow room. LOBOS STOMP PALO DURO DONS 45-0 The speedy Lcvelland Lobos ran rings around the Palo Duro Dons as the Dons fell 45-0. Coach Reddcll said the team could expect a game this hard every week, but by hard work on the part of the boys they could have a fine ball club by the end of the season. Milton Brown, Back Franklin Brunson, Center Clarence Young, Tackle Pat Ashbum, Back Jerry Cannon, Back DOWN, BOY, DOWN! That seems to be the motto of Milton Brown (33) and Clarence Young (73) as they bring down an opposing player from Vernon. James Coffee, Guard VERNON LIONS SUBDUE DONS 18-6 The Dons were defeated chiefly because they were heavily out-weighed. Late in the fourth quarter a razzle-dazzle, double reverse pass play set up the only Don score. Edward Mills jyassed to Sonny Hughes on the Vernon seven and four downs later Jerry Cannon plowed over for the score. Frank Browns try for the extra point was no good as Vernon went on to win 18-6. Edward Mills, Back Warren Hunkapiller, Back Pat Hawkins, Guard Drew Sparlin, Guard Jim Teague, End SWEETWATER HUMILIATES PALO DURO DONS 61-0 The classy Mustangs from Sweetwater ran and passed to a lopsided 61-0 vic- tory over the Dons from Palo Duro here on November 18. This was the last game of the season for the Dons as they closed with a record of 1 win and 9 losses. Don Whittenberg, Back Basketball Jack Anderson “B” Team Coach Tom Gilley Head Basketball Coach SUMMARY OF POST-SEASON GAMES With the district championship safely tucked away the Dons looked ahead to bigger things. The first roadblock in the way of a state cham- p was the Grand Prairie Gophers. That fine pionship ball elm ill club had gone through their district without a defeat and were lead by a great G’9” center. Playing at Grand Prairie the Dons dropped the first game of a best two of three series. Then, with backs to the wall, the Dons, playing their finest game of the season racked the Gophers twice 86-57 and 83-58. David Stafford At the state tournament the Dons drew Marshall for their first opposition. By half-time of that game the Dons had built up a 15 point lead and had little trouble the rest of the way. The final score: 66-47. The game for the state championship found the Dons facing French of Reaumont, a school which had made six previous trips to the tournament. Here’s how a reffortcr for the SAGE sate it. The Fighting Dons, Palo Duro’s team of destiny, made history as they brought the championship trophy back to the school that, a year ago, didn’t even exist. The familiar fivesome of Arrington, Echols, Hover, Hyatt, and Reid carried the fight the most of the way and by the end of the third quarter had the game all but wrapped up ROBERT ECHOLS LETS A WEARY BULLDOG REST A MOMENT ON HIS KNEE as Paul Hyatt (15) and Big Jim Reid (33) lend a helping hand.
