MANAGER; Maia Lawrence This year the Paly Varsity Girl's Tennis Team, with an abundance of experience, rallied their way to a second place finish in the SCVAL, behind a Gunn team. Captain Alicia Thesing and her partner Tina Cannon helped lead the team to a 5-3 league record and an overall record of 8-6. The team's proudest achievement was their upset win over Gunn in the Schaughnessy playoffs, a first since 1981. Kari Swenson's singles victory was the first over a Titan player this season in the SCVAL. Coach Sue Duffek feels that next year's team, with all it's Varsity players returning, has the potential to be stronger than the last. This seasons JV team was outstanding, winning the SCVAL championship with a shining 5-0 league record. 10-1 overall. Captain Heidi Hulse and her partner Shirin Ghotbi won the league title in doubles. ■ ■ ■ ■ Girls Tennis Cross Country This year was a strong year overall for the Paly Cross Country Team. Both the boys and girls teams showed extremely well at the league meet, as well as throughout the season of invitationals. Varsity girls took fourth at league, while varsity boys took a close third. The Freshman boys' team swept the SCVAL meet, scoring a perfect fifteen points. Both varsity teams, boys and girls, qualified for CCS; however, results were not in at time of press. Several harriers had outstanding seasons: Brian Schilling, Steve Apfelberg, and Ron Mandel for varsity boys; JoAnn Arnold, and Brooke VanNatta for varsity girls; Fred Dolan, Tim Ross, and Gabe Rafi Kugler, for freshman boys, The team was competently led by the combined super-human coaching of Paul Jones and Dave Bayliss. The team holds strong promise for next year with the return of many strong runners, so things are looking up for the future of Paly cross country. 8oys, (Alphabetical) Andy Ager, Josh Auper, Steve Apfelberg, Steve Austin, Greg Barton, Erik Bertelsen. Their hard work paid off when they won the cheer trophey at UC Davis. This further inspired them to work hard as a group, despite their large squad. JV is planning to be involved in competition this spring of '88. The Varsity squad this year attended camp at San Luis Obispo. We received many honors if which one was an invitation to compete at the High School Nationals taking place in January in Cypress Gardens, Florida. We have had a very successful year so far, and hope that basketball will go just as well. 126 RALLY Candids SMILE DORON I Quick, everyone gather around, its time for Q picture! 128 CANDIDS Hey, doesn't this belong in the PALS section?? I think I can, I think I can CANDIDS 129 1987-1988 Fads 1987. A year of political turmoil and scandal-happy press. The year we sold arms to Iran to give money to the Contras to make Ollie North and Fawn Hall 1 in the T.V. trials ratings. The year the Bakkers fell from grace and Donna Rice and Gary Hart lived up to the name of his boat, Monkey Business. But affairs other than these sordid ones will come to the minds of those who reflect on the way this school year began. 1987 was also the year of film hits such as Dirty Dancing, La Bamba, Fatal Attraction, and My Life as a Dog. And music hits like Def Leppard's Hysteria, L.L. Cool J's Bigger and Defter, U2's Joshua Tree, La Bamba , and the reunion of Pink Floyd. We continued to veg on Days of Our Lives, LA. Law, and The Cosby Show. HUMM BABY was the word of the playoffs. Style-wise, girls wore their hair long and their skirts short, Guys wore their pant cuffs rolled up to show off their high tops. And everyone wore acid wash denim and leather jackets. Then came 1988. Year of the Dragon, A leap year, bringing with it the XVth Olympiad, a presidential election, and even a leap second. Through the cold winter we kept warm with Stud Center cookies and broccoli beef from King Chuan's at T C. We rocked out to new albums from Sting, R.E.M., and George Harrison. Our favorite TV became the Winter Games with local skaters Brian Boitano and Debi Thomas winning medals for the USA. As the year progressed, the Seniors kicked back in the sun to watch everyone else stress their way to summer. 132 ACTIVITIES 1987-1988 Fads ACTIVITIES 133 Paly Travellers Junior Chelsea Edwards in Cabo San Lucas, Three travellers with Dottie Bradshaw's Europe Tour group in Senior Rachel Zare on top of a gnome in Austrii Mexico June 1987 Alissa Perlstein and Connie Lewis in Paris 134 ACTIVITIES Travel Jeremy Eddy sails over the Sierra slopes Holly and Beth Holzer with Niagara Falls in the background CLUB MED The Palo Alto Youth in Government delegates at a San Luis Obispo gas station ACTI VITES 135 Winter 136 ACTIVITIES Formal Mistletoe Madness was the name and theme of the Winter Formal. All interested skiers are welcome to join at anytime. p161 The Paly Alpinist Club is designed to improve one's self-confidence, self-discipline, and personal achievement through rock climbing and various other activities. Members climb once a week at Castle Rock State Park. This year, the club also planned weekend camping trips, ski trips, and camp climb trips to the Pinnacles and Yosemite. Tom Wilson, David Kimber, David Stemps, Isabelle Papescu, Brice Roegiers, Mike Rysdorp, Cat Randall. The Bob Sebra Fan Club was created in the summer of 1986 when an intrepid band of inebriated adventurers first glimpsed the back of the blue Montreal Expos jacket which read: 48-Sebra. This vision, this vision of Bob, inspired the formation of yet another semi-useless club at PALY. The Bob Sebra Fan Club wishes to evoke a response to the many letters, notes, and cards we have and will continue to send to Bob (we can call him Bob.) We also hope to promote campus awareness of this semi-quasi-pseudo-almost-near-practically-sort of- missed it by that much deity and the game of baseball in general. If you do. you probably just made the same mistake millions of parents make every year. You based your decision on what you saw in the kids' mouths in the picture. But. that’s far from the total picture. You just can’t give an eye test to a child’s teeth. A smile that looks acceptable at a young age can be in for some problems later. Even parents who wore braces themselves frequently don’t realize that the purpose was to help shape the health of their mouths, not just straighten their teeth. Proper spacing is paramount for good mouth health. Sometimes pretty smiles are pretty cramped. Sometimes mouths are great in front where you can sec them, but bad in the rear where you can’t. These are the reasons why every child should have an orthodontic checkup. An orthodontist will analyze the mouth in terms of the effect of tooth alignment or facial formation on long-term health. The fact is. two out of three untreated mouths show a problem. Twenty-five percent will be serious. This also means that millions of problem mouths are going untreated every year. The shame is. many of them could be simply corrected at a young age. Correction can be a lot more extensive in later years. We. of the American Association of Orthodontists, are the qualified men and women who meet the extended educational requirements mandatory for an orthodontic specialist. We are doing our best to make parents aware that an orthodontic checkup is essential for every child, no matter how pleasing a smile may look. One checkup can assure you that you’re doing your best to keep that smile — for a lifetime. We’d be happy to give you further information on the importance of orthodontics to mouth health, not only to children but also to adults. Just write the American Association of Orthodontists. 460 N.
