What Was Hot In ’87 So what were those trends, music groups, movies, TV shows, and 11 hot spots that typified and will someday remind us ot the way we spent our time and money during the 1986-87 school year? The year definitely had its own distinct set of fashions and trends. Some noteworthy items representing the fads and styles of the year are: bows, scarves, large hoop earrings, boots, leather jackets, jean jackets, overalls, skirts of any kind, and anything from the Gap, Limited, Contempo, Guess, or C.P. Shades. In the music scene, Genesis and Peter Gabriel were very popu- lar, as well as Van Halen, U2, Bruce Springsteen, Run DMC, Sling, and the Cure. Memorable movies of the year include: Top Gun , Aliens , “Crocodile Dundee , “Stand By Me , “Blue Velvet , “Peggy Sue Got Married , “Platoon , and “Some Kind of Wonderful . Thursday night proved indisputably to be the best night on the boob tube with “The Cosby Show , “Family Ties , and “Cheers . Other favorite TV shows during the year were “Moonlighting , “L.A. Law , and “Miami Vice . Night-time soaps still held their most loyal audiences, but were generally disappointing with some highly improbable and sometimes ridiculous storylines (especially the one which allowed “Bobby to reappear on “Dallas , making the entire previous season one long dream). For those students who chose to leave the campus for lunch, (assuming themselves to be too good for the Student Center), the Market at Town and Country always drew sizable crowds of Paly people. And for those with cars (and assuming themselves to be loo good for the Student Center andT C), lack in the Box, Cool Licks, and McDonald's were a few of the favorite places to eat, in addition to the newly opened Burger King in downtown Palo Alto. There was no particular “hangout for Palo Alto teenagers after school and on weekends, but many could be found at Stanford Shopping Center, the Vortex — the new Palo Alto dance club. Century 10 Cinemas in Mountain View, or at the Palo Alto Square. Bows, bows, and more bows were all the rage at Paly in '87. Peter Gabriel was hot in “86 and his concerts at the Oakland Coliseum were well-attended by Paly students. 4.
