SPIRIT WEEK 2 SENIORS 170 Spirit 2 SPIRIT Week At It’s Best Seniors The Class of '87 did it again! Once again, they have taken the Spirit Week competition by storm, earning them- selves their third straight victory and proving once and for all, that the Class of '87 rules the school. Led by Student Body President Kathy Yep and Class President David Swerdlick, the seniors racked up the most points by finishing first in almost every contest. After kick- ing off Spirit Week with their own Toga Day, the seniors dominated the compe- tition throughout the week with their endless flow of school spirit. Green, the traditional color of the seniors, was om- nipresent on Color Day, as were canes, granny glasses, gray hair, and wrinkles of the seniors' float, crushed all the oth- er competitors in the Float Contest, proving the seniors' point: ' Seniors got the power! Taking The Town M f SPIRIT 5 Juniors 6 SPIRIT '‘Nothing but the best for the Class of 88' was the general theme and mood of the junior class during Spirit Week, President Trish Chalmers led her sophisticated class to a close, 3rd-place finish behind the Class of '90. A substantial num- ber of juniors showed their spirit by decking out in their yellow duds on Color Day, and going all out in style on Dress-up Day. Only The Best Soph om ores 8 SPIRIT Although the Class of '89 placed fourth in the Spirit Week competition, they did not lack class unity or enthusiasm. Led by Class President Tida Violante, the sophomores showed true spirit and sportsmanship throughout the week. On Color Day, sopho- mores could be recognized for their red attire and paraphenalia, and on Dress-up Day, many soph- omores were seen in poodle skirts and leather jackets. Catch Our Wave 4 - W SPIRIT 9 10 SPIRIT Paly's Frosted Freshmen , un- der the spirited leadership of Class President Elise Greven, upset the sophomores and juniors by placing 2nd in the Spirit Week Competition (setting a new record for Paly ninth- graders). Unafraid of showing their spirit, wearing orange, or dressing up as babies, the Class of '90 pro- vided stiff competition for the other classes, and proved, in the words of Tony the Tiger, that ‘’they're not just good .. . they're GRREAT! Paly juniors and seniors are paired up with one or two freshmen buddies and help them to quickly feel a part of the Paly community. The upperclassmen also provide support for the freshmen and try to answer any questions their buddy may have concerning school, activities or any general problems. The Friendship project breaks down the traditional class level barriers and is fun and rewarding to all who make an effort to participate. 18 ACTIVITIES Friendship Project Julia Angwm. Special Friendship Project The Special Friendship Project provides an important opportunity for main-stream Paly students to form friendships with some of the students in the Learning Handicapped Special Day Class. The main-stream students are paired with a special friend in the class, and meet for lunch and other social activities. Activities range from pizza parties picnics to a trip to Yosemite. The Special Friendship Project helps to better acquaint the main stream students with a valuable and sometimes overlooked part of the student body. The year definitely had its own distinct set of fashions and trends. Some noteworthy items representing the fads and styles of the year are: bows, scarves, large hoop earrings, boots, leather jackets, jean jackets, overalls, skirts of any kind, and anything from the Gap, Limited, Contempo, Guess, or C.P. Shades. In the music scene, Genesis and Peter Gabriel were very popu- lar, as well as Van Halen, U2, Bruce Springsteen, Run DMC, Sling, and the Cure. Memorable movies of the year include: Top Gun , Aliens , “Crocodile Dundee , “Stand By Me , “Blue Velvet , “Peggy Sue Got Married , “Platoon , and “Some Kind of Wonderful . Thursday night proved indisputably to be the best night on the boob tube with “The Cosby Show , “Family Ties , and “Cheers . Other favorite TV shows during the year were “Moonlighting , “L.A. Law , and “Miami Vice . Night-time soaps still held their most loyal audiences, but were generally disappointing with some highly improbable and sometimes ridiculous storylines (especially the one which allowed “Bobby to reappear on “Dallas , making the entire previous season one long dream). For those students who chose to leave the campus for lunch, (assuming themselves to be too good for the Student Center), the Market at Town and Country always drew sizable crowds of Paly people. And for those with cars (and assuming themselves to be loo good for the Student Center andT C), lack in the Box, Cool Licks, and McDonald's were a few of the favorite places to eat, in addition to the newly opened Burger King in downtown Palo Alto. There was no particular “hangout for Palo Alto teenagers after school and on weekends, but many could be found at Stanford Shopping Center, the Vortex — the new Palo Alto dance club. Century 10 Cinemas in Mountain View, or at the Palo Alto Square. FADS 21 WINNER GOLDEN GLOBE AWARD BEST ACTOR (musical or comcdv) Yearbook On The Wall Yearbook Class The 1986-'87 yearbook owes its smashing success to the brilliant leadership of veteran yearbook staffers Amy Kieraldo and Caroline King. The two editors in chief spent long hours mapping out the outstanding design of this year's yearbook. Of course, all of their efforts would have been to no avail without the diligence and creativity of the rest of the year- book staff. The unsung heroes of this year's staff are: Holly Behr, Colin Bricken, Cam Burr, Blaine Cole, Stephanie Cor- ning, Lori Devalle, Chris Divis, Aoife Dowley, Meg Ellefson, Stewatt Epstien, Maureen Fitch, Laura Foster, Tyler Gill, Clive Henrick, Lome Johnson, Susan Kagel, Alex Kaplinsky, Amy Kieraldo, Elizabeth Kim, Caroline King, Clayton Kunz, Chip, Roy Lee, Michele Lew, Patrick Loungeway, Neil McGaraghan, Jason Monberg, Kim Moravick, Jen Peters, Sam, Allison Shore, Josh Snodgrass, Lisa Tharpe, Chauntelle Zschokke. 22 YEARBOOK Campanile Behind every edition of the Campanile is at least two weeks of effort. First Stories are researched and written, hopefully, but rarely, before the deadline. During production week, when the paper is pasted together, Graphics is THE place to be. Page editors wrestle with the computers, rock music blares out of the window, brownies and salsa materialize on a table, the headline machine becomes constipated, the blue pencils and metal rulers vaporize, layouts are rearranged, the editors-in-chief obsess over invisible details, and the staff spends hours inventing obscene or hilariously inappropriate headlines. Finally, Mrs. Wojcicki arrives, freaks out, censors all the headlines, and the issue is ready for publication. In ternational Paly's first International Festival was held this year to celebrate the variety of nationalities at Paly. The purpose of International Week was for students to develop an awareness of different cultural heritages, points of view, issues and to recognize the independence of people and events around the world- Every Paly student had the opportunity to listen to speakers and music and witness dances and sports demonstrations. Many restaurants contributed to this event by selling foods at lunch. Festival A great deal of planning went into the preparations for Internationa] Week. Many thanks to Barbara Greenwood, our chairman, Mary Jensen for foods, Carolyn Reller for hospitality, Theresa Bourke for publicity, Kristine Erving and Mary Young for community resources, Susie Christiansen for displays and demonstrations, Carol Murden and Sue Apfelberg for sports, Nancy Drapkin and Hortense Burke for the speakers, Gwen Barry our treasurer, and of course the Paly staff and students. The team members also excelled in the classroom, setting a CCS record with a 3.9J7 average GPA. Coach Vivien Moyer feels next year's team has the potential to be as strong or stronger than this year's squad. She praised sophomores Hewitt, Swenson, Tina Cannon, and junior Nicole Winches- ter as four returning players to lead the Vikings to victory in 1987. This year's JV team also was outstanding, winning the SCVAL championship with an immaculate league record. Barrie Klynne, Melissa Vadman, and Captain Melanie Baker led the team to success. Although the Vikings clearly outplayed many of their SCVAL opponents, they could not find any luck near the opponent's goal What little scoring the hooters had was handled by senior co-captain Sam Player and junior forward Andrew Murden. Senior Scott Witscher and junior Teague Donahey controlled the Midfield, while senior co-captain Jim Kurpius anchored a strong defense consisting of Jason Ekstrom, Sean Sullivan, and Bob Torres-all seniors. Sophomore keeper David Ramberg earned the team's MVP award with some outstanding play in goal, and Player collected the team's Most Inspirational player award. Loungway shortly after returning home from a seven year trek through the Himalayian mountains. During which time he studied under many of the great Budhist spiritual leaders. Under their guidance he grew immensely, yet returned home unfulfilled and broke. He needed a car to return the last few miles home, so he purchased a metallic mud brown AMC Gremlin X V8 with a pink left wheel well and a round porthole-type window in the rear. On his homeward journey west, he discovered the merits of this fine automobile as he sang along to many a John Denver musical selections played on his Hitachi 8-track. Often on the open highway did Loungway experience near Nirvana in the car's spun nylon, Levi edition interior. After returning to friends and family, one night his car mysteriously imploded into a pellet of pure energy. Because his experience was such a meaningful one, Brother Loungway formed the Gremlin Club to share the joy that only the ownership of an AMC Gremlin automobile can bring. Among the clubs activities, none of which have occured, the reporting of sightings and the simple enjoying of the Gremlin's aesthetic qualities are just a few. Dismembers: Patrick J. Loungway, Waverly R. Smith, David Socrates Swerdlick, Kimberly Gay Dillon, Nicole J. Neumaker, Janet N. Chang, Sidney Eugene Buttrill, Christopher A. White Farris, Sabra T. Hattner, Lisa A. Have an opinion? If you do. you probably just made the same mistake millions of parents make every year. You based your decision on what you saw in the kids’ mouths in the picture. But, that’s far from the total picture. You just can’t give an eye test to a child’s teeth. A smile that looks acceptable at a young age can be in for some problems later. Even parents who wore braces themselves frequently don’t realize that the purpose was to help shape the health of their mouths, not just straighten their teeth. Proper spacing is paramount for good mouth health. Sometimes pretty smiles are pretty cramped. Sometimes mouths are great in front where you can see them, but bad in the rear where you can't. These are the reasons why every child should have an orthodontic checkup. An orthodontist will analyze the mouth in terms of the effect of tooth alignment or facial formation on long-term health. The fact is, two out of three untreated mouths show a problem. Twenty-five percent will be serious. This also means that millions of problem mouths are going untreated every year. The shame is, many of them could be simply corrected at a young age. Correction can be a lot more extensive in later years. We, of the American Association of Orthodontists, are the qualified men and women who meet the extended educational requirements mandatory for an orthodontic specialist. We are doing our best to make parents aware that an orthodontic checkup is essential for every child, no matter how pleasing a smile may look. One checkup can assure you that you’re doing your best to keep that smile — for a lifetime. We’d be happy to give you further information on the importance of orthodontics to mouth health, not only to children but also to adults. Just write the American Association of Orthodontists. 460 N. It is enclosed with ninety-eight, I’m sorry it’s a month too late. I said I’d sent the rest myself, These ten were lying on a shelf. The pages sent as six and seven, I’d like to change to ten and eleven. That is unless they’re already done. In that case make it ninety-one. Please send page twelve and thirteen back, I should have made those two girls’ track. Instead I sent girls’ volleyball, And that can’t go in there at all. I had it planned wrong, that’s the thing I plumb forgot it came in “Spring.” I’m sorry all our stuff was late, Could that affect delivery date? Love, Amy Kieraldo and Caroline King Editors
