VOLLEYBALL The Varsity Volleyball team was relatively young and inexperi- enced in relation to the other teams in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League (SCVALS). They participated in two pre-league tournaments which were beneficial to the team. These tourna- ments and pre-league games contributed to the teams togeth- erness and experience level. For the next few years the varsity will work on improving the skills of the returning players and hopefully move up in the league rankings. The Junior Varsity volleyball team faced some tough competi- tion this year. The season resulted in overall improvement of skills and ability to work well together. The highlight of the season was the stunning victory over Los Altos, whose varsity team is the best in the league and is nationally ranked. Awards were given to Kris van Konynenburg for best defensive player. Christine Pepgras for best offensive player and Amy Paugh received most valuable player. Top left: Smith bumps the ball. A Winning Season! The Palo Alto Vikings varsity football team ended the season with a winning 5-4-1 re- cord. The varsity Vikings exploded into the season with three impressive wins over Se- quoia, Lynbrook, and Menlo school. Durring league play the Vikings suffered losses to Santa Clara, Wilcox, and Los Altos. League highlights were two blowout wins over Milpi- tas, Gunn and a hard fought tie to Mt. View. The season ending game against Gunn ex- emplified the talent and hard play throught the year. The Paly offence stifled opposing defenses all year with an impressive running and passing attack. Senior Don Powell and junior Andre Watkins supplied an incredible running game while junior Corey Brand con- trolled the passing game by throwing pri- marily to seniors Dan Peters and Barry Campbell. The relentless Paly defense led by seniors Nelson Hancock, Bret Schiller, Mark King, Brian Barry and other returning talent displayed incredible strength throught the year. The Paly defense this strength by re- cording three shutouts against Sequoia, Mil- pitas, and Gunn. When asked about the teams future, second year coach Scott Laurence replied, The Palo Alto football program is on the rise. The next few teams will have playoff potential’'.
