Table Of Contents Dedication Ken White, one time student at Paly, has gone on to become one of the best math teachers of our time. Ken began school at Walter Hayes, and graduated from Jordan in 1939- After graduating from Paly in 1942, he served for three years in the military during World War II. After his tour of duty Ken returned to school at San Jose State, then on to Stanford, and finished at Yale. In 1953 he started teaching at a school in Sacramento with a salary of five thousand dollars a year. At the end of that year he decided to transfer to his alma mater, Paly, inspite of the one thousand dollar pay cut He did this because “kids at Paly are different, they're brighter than average.” Ken White has had a profound effect on all those he has taught. Although his class may not always be exciting, it never lacks uniqueness. Such classic lines as A kindergart- ner at Walter Hayes could do that problem, why can’t this class do it?” and Nice thing about these problems is there all alike, right?” After his retirement Ken plans to travel the world, mostly in Europe, he hopes. Both staff and students will miss Mr. White, we wish him luck in his future endeavors. Thanks Ken! 1 2 Dedication People 5 Top Right: Josh Minkus plays his role by showing his inner personality. In an attempt to reduce traditional Spirit Week vandalism, the Administra- tion decided to reduce the week” to only three days, this decision was extremely unpopular with the majority of the students, especially the Seniors who felt, cheated and deprived ... as one student put it. Another change occured when the powers that be decided to bring the floats to Paly to be completed on Thursday, thus eliminating the traditional element of surprise at halftime of the Homecoming game, played on Friday. Most students felt that such drastic measures need not have been taken, but the Administration believed that things had gotten out of hand last year. Despite their lack of popularity, the changes did help to reduce vandalism dur- ing the three days. tumes worn by the Senior class on Thursday, the Seniors were again in first place. Continuing their romp of the Sophomores, the class of '85 proceeded to sweep the competitions on Friday by winning the spoon relay, dress relay, ice cream feed, tug-of-war, and the yell contest. The clinching moment came when the floats emerged for their showing. The Senior float was obviously far above that of the class of ’87 in design, craftsmanship, and originality. The clear winner, Gumby was awarded many more points than any of the other floats and helped to swing the Senior class to a well-deserved victory. The Freshmen finished a hard-earned second; the Juniors were an average third; and the Sophomores finished with only the Revenge of the Class of ’85. Another significant event marking Spirit Week was the performance of the Sopho- more class who, at the beginning of the competition on Wednesday held a com- manding lead. However, during the rally on Wednesday, the Seniors narrowed the mar- gin to a few points. And, after an impressive performance by Chris Fry in the baby bottle contest and the superiority of the cos- Srs. The Little Vikes help run the rallies, lead class cheers, and generally promote school spirit. The song groups perform at rallies and other school functions whereas the cheerleaders lead cheers at rallies and sporting events. Rally is a class that meets during seventh period either outside or in the dance stu- dio. During the class, synchronized routines are practiced and new ones are learned. To be a cheer- leader at Paly requires dedication, patience, and energy. Math 61 Paly has two years of required science. For those students who wish to advance in the scientific arts, Paly offers such courses as physics, chemistry and geology. Additionally the A.P. (ad- vanced placement) at Paly is much more diverse than average high schools. The A.P. program offers students a chance to earn college credits for courses taken here. Over all the Paly science department remains above average in excellence despite forced cutbacks. Opposite Left: Clarence Bakken, Frank Barr, Angelo Corapassi, Andria Hrzberger, Sarjit Gill. Bruce Mori, Lynn Ilori, Ron Iverson, Neil Kenny, Kathy Lawrence. Dan Seitz. fA The Physical Education department at Paly offers a wide spectrum of activities. Even though budget cuts have forced the P.E. department to reduce the number of classes offered, the selection still remains more diversified than at most other high schools. Some of the activities include gymnastics, soccer, basketball, golf, and field hock- ey. The contract P.E. program also adds to the range of classes offered by allowing the student to present his or her contract for an individual or team sport to Judith Stark. The student must have a minimum of nine hours per week, and an instructional supervisor. This year the P.E. department conducted intramurals, which, during lunchtime and after school, pitted students against the faculty of Paly. The games were designed to improve student to faculty relations. Above right: A student making a beautiful save. Middle left: Students playing volleyball. Over 125 Paly juniors and seniors are each paired with two freshmen buddies for the entire year. The upperclassmen meet with their ninth graders and provide support and answer questions about school classes, activities, and student life. The program breaks down the traditional barriers between different class levels and provides an experience that is both fun and rewarding. Working one to one with students, the program's staff - Kurt Johnson and Hedi Schiessler - help students to successfully complete learning contracts which cover the estab- lished course curriculum, improve basic skills and explore areas of individual interest. Located up- stairs in the Tower Building, the program also encourages students to develop important skills of self- discipline and time management in cooperative and supportive atmo- sphere. First started with student initiative fourteen years ago, the program continues to be a place where students can experience re- sponsibility and enthusiasm for learning and personal growth. John Simmerman Graduating Tcaclu-rs 2 Here’s the first thing you should look for... when you look into orthodontics. Here's why. Those three circles, two irregular, one perfect, form the symbol of the American Association of Orthodontists. What they’re saying and what they stand for is highly relevant to wha you should expect in regard to treatment and who you should look toward to do it. Look tor the picture of health. Certainly, orthodontics should give you a picture smile and, just as important, make you the picture of oral health. That’s why the symbol moves from irregular forms to a perfectly balanced circle. Balance between teeth and jaws is what the skills of the orthodontist achieve. This facial harmony —more than just moving crooked teeth — helps see to it that your bite, once improved, stays healthy. jo ok for the picture if skill. Wherever you may see it, js you seek treatment, the symbol of the American Association of Orthodontists assures you that you’re seeing a specialist. He or she will have had at least two additional continuous years of advanced study in ortho- dontics after receiving a dental degree. And that study was conducted in a program accredited by the American Dental Association. Because there are more than 7,500 practicing ortho- dontists in the Association, you should find us well represented in your area. Start your look now. We’d like to give you more information on orthodontics in general and on what you should expect from treat- ment. Just mail the coupon. We’ll send you information to help you understand even better why you should look for our symbol when you look into orthodontics. TO: American Association of Orthodontists 460 N. Cornish Carey has played an integral role in the growth of the San Francisco Peninsula for some 50 years. Now, we're the largest real estate company here. Our Commercial Division handles sales and leasing of commercial and in- vestment property in the fastest-growing areas of the country, Silicon Valley and the Bay area. Cornish Carey's Residential Division has been growing, and we've even added a special division to take care of Relocation Services for our corporate clients moving into or out of the Bay area. Cornish St Carey Mortgage was established in 1983 as a separate di- vision of the Company. Since then, we've also set up separate divisions for Property Management and Investments. Our new Land Division helps high tech companies and developers find sites for expansion outside the Bay area. This final page is dedicated to the memory of Alison Walker. Her tragic death in early January came as a sudden shock and brought sorrow to all who knew her. The final page of a yearbook is generally devoted to summing up the year, to finalizing unfinished business, and to saying goodbye. By dedicating this page to her memory, the editors hope to allow those who were denied a chance to say goodbye, the opportunity to do so. As her life was tragically cut short, we also hope that this page will serve as a substitute, no matter how poor, for a gradual, natural ending to her life. Finally, we hope that this page will serve as a reminder. Let it remind us of friendship, love, and understanding. Alison’s smile, wit, and indeed her whole presence will be sorely missed. We, the editors and staff of the yearbook, would like to express sympathy to her family, friends, and all those fortunate enough to nave known her. 288 Editors' Note
