DEDICATION This year's Madrono is dedicated to principal James Van for his care and devotion to Palo Alto High School. Seen often around campus by the students, he gained the love and respect of many of them. He was always willing to help in student activities and took a special interest in individuals. In administrating, Mr. Van put effort into or- ganization and fund-raising. He also greatly improved relations between students and administration during his four years at Paly. We are happy to see him advance in his profession, but we will be sorry to see him go. 2 3 4 5 6 HH 8 9 10 11 13 RAISIN' HELL AND HAVIN' 14 FUN WE RE THE CLASS OF 3? T= o rviu, - s ' irn -£ -... The Cubberley Paly merge had settled down, and the rally squad went on to promote united spirit for our outstanding athletic teams. The rally groups and pep club, with Gerry Meyer's help, have been able to keep the spirit alive. The spirit was marked by many rallies with exciting themes, a new pep club and many spirit signs. HALLOWEEN Halloween this year was better than ever before. There was an extraordinary Rally with heavy em- phasis on New Wave The crowd was a profusu- sion of costumes, old men, aliens, a funeral, a mushroom, the cowhip monster and many others. During the rally the costumes were judged and each class carved a pumpkin. The Friday night date gave birth to wild night of Halloween festivities. 106 107 HOMECOMING Homecoming week this year was highlighted by fierce competition between the Juniors ond the Seniors. The Seniors ended up with a small margin over the Juniors, even though the Juniors received a first place in the highly disputed float judging. The excellence of the noon-time entertainment and the general absence of hostility combined to make the rallys a quality effort. The homecoming game was a Paly success with the Vikings trouncing the Gunn team. The victory added a spark to the Homecoming dance that evening, which was deemed the best in years. First, there was the sensitive story itself which deals with our attitude toward those who are different. Next was the episode structure which challenged the abilities of our technical crew. Finally, there were acting opportunities for our twenty-five students including an exciting and difficult leading role. The audiences really seemed to like this one- and be moved by it. 113 Joe Fenwick JUNICES Phoebe Abi John Albrecht David Almeter Wesley Andersen Joleen Andrews Teri Apple Anno Armstrong Richard Armstrong Daniel Aspiras Robert Atkins Morcelle Auer George Azevedo Lauren Dodger Lisa Dailey Caroline Dailie Jacqueline Dorber Andrew Domes Sherri Domes Kenneth Dorton Paul Dotoille Janice Baler Edward Baum Krista Baumhoff Terri Baxter David Beard Keith Dlockburn Steven Dloir Connie Bowen Caroline Dressier Karen Drewster Elizabeth Drierly Stuart Britton Peter Brooks I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I Vicki Burnett William Bushnell Jennifer Cohn Susan Campbell Martha Carlstead Paul Catlstrom Jennifer Carpenter Jesse Carpenter David Casas Maty Catlin Anna Centiella Andrew Chaffee Leland Chen Kingsley Chin Neil Chin Lisa Chmyz Carol Christiani Sylvia Cinibulk 117 Illllllllllllllllll Barbara Clark Alison Coghlin Robin Collins Diane Collmon Johnetto Clork Nicholas Colburn Jonathon Cole Alan Colley Jacqueline Corchodo Martha Cornell Catherine Gone Carrie Cresap Jacquelyn Criner 118 Thomas Crozier Margaret Cummins Jeffrey Dalton Eric Danner Christopher Davis Matthew Davis Talib Davis Randall De La Cruz Steven Deifsch Kimberly Deterline Anne Deutschlonder James Dew son Karen Dietrich Joanna Dingmon Helen Dobbie Andrew Dodge Mory Dolon Amy Dollinger David Donald Patricia Doolittle Michelle Dubois Lorri Dubuque Kathleen Dunne 119 120 Doyno Eadie Anno Ellenbetger Margaret Early Jeffrey Former More Ferrari Sandro Fletcher Jennifer Friedland Susan Feldman Kathryn Fiene Gena Fonseca Kathy Friedlander Karen Fuhumura Sarah Fullerton Thomas Eddy Michele Falkner Leslie Felperin Sean Fitzpatrick Wendy Freeman Oorbora Frye Catherine Funderburk ■■■■■■■■■ Curtis Funderburk Elizobefh Gordner Rochel Golden Pierro Gognon Morcello Goll Soroh Gordiner Suzonne Gordiner Tereso Gorsho Trocy Goodnow Donald Gray Timothy Getzoff Eugene Gordon Regina Gray Charlene Gleoson Shoi Gozani Cynthia Greenlief Dovid Goddord Nathaniel Graessle Laura Gwosden Victoria Haffner 121 Charlotte Height Soroh Hammett N Joseph Hardegree Ned Harwood Robert Henry Kathleen Hermsen David Hill Bruce Halidorson Tamara Haney Heather Hollenbeck James Harbough Ann Hepworth Eduardo Hernandez Mortin Herceg Jeffrey Hickman Melissa Hill Kurt Hipp 122 Suvon Hmelor Peter Hopkinson Perer Hughes Julie Inoess Vlkki Jarman Craig Hoi kind Christopher Hull Drift Ivy % Eric Jensen Susan Holiowoy Mike Holfum Ion Honmyo Ian Johnson Jeffrey Johnson Heather Hughes Meagan Ingraham Joel Johnson I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I lllllllllllllllllll Kurt Johnson Michoel Johnson Eydie Kagan James Kallman Najla Kaiwan Donnie Katzive Jomes Keesey Robin Keller 4 k V i Josef Kercso Kurt Kern Leslie Jonoth Suzanne Jorof Jennifer Judd David Koo Erik Karrer Mervar Kafwan Kim Kawamura Perer Keegon Shown Kelmon Kurt Kelfy Robbyn Kenyon Robin Keishner April Kietzmann Ashley King lllllllllllllllllll I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I Lori Klnyon Kevin Kohn Max Krueger Sandro Large Ellen Larsen Mary Jane Laster Todd Laurence 125 Illllllllllllllllll David Lewiston t ili Dovid Leever Clore Libby Elana Lombard Suzanne Lerner I Stephen Liston Jeanne London Jon Lorey Ellen Lougee Wanda Lovelace Charles Luce Karen Luks 126 Jenny Lullenbine Jade Lum Mary Luotto Thomas Luth Michael Lynch Forrest Maltzman Mark Manley Regan McDonald .1 . The children , a senator, a judge, and a much-married vixen, are angry because Ethel has been putting a great deal of the family fortune into a philanthropic fund. The Curious Savage contains many twists and surprises many good laughs, and, if you are sensitive, perhaps even a few tears. We did not hold back on anything; a fully blocked sword fight, live harpsichord music and fantastic comic characterization were all extremely successful. Shows are always hard, they always pull together in the last six hours, but not all of them end up to be as much fun for everyone involved as Tom Jones was. Classes such as government are open to students in the main school who wish to participate in individual learning. A School also provides a space for community activities, small workshops, social action projects, indepen- dent contracts, and exciting field trips. A School increases growth in community action, personal consciousness, and group interaction, thus serving as another educational facet of Paly. ?44 • u’ Ir t r 245 VISUAL ARTS An individual's values, attitudes, and sensi- bilities are the key to his intellect. The arts, since they are most directly concerned with the development of these values, are an essential component of all learning. Palo Alto High School's Art Department embodies these ideas by providing a diverse and supportive setting in which students may explore and benefit from their creative experiences. Not only do students have the opportunity to choose from a wide selection of courses, but also on their own time to make use of the exceptional resources of the Department. This openness and availability best charac- tize Paly's Art Department - an invitation to develop an aspect of human understanding that is both fundamental and enriching. Among these are the resource spe- cialist programs, which provide back-up instruction for students in general education classes. Resource specialists Sandy Anaya. Jim Ruck, and Sherry Willis administer diagnostic tests and work with counselors and staff to aid individual students. Another service is the two special day classes taught by Gerry Larvey and Cammy Sunde. These students spend the majority of their day in self-contained classrooms, but are involved in at least one main- stream class. Students receive pre-vocational and vocational training as well as training in daily living skills. Other special education personnel are speech and language therapists Judy Buttril and Judy Ellwanger, and staff psychologist Margaret Sachs. These special- ists, together with the teachers of the special educa- tion programs, make it possible for more students to participate successfully in the Palo Alto High School community. 266 Opposite page, bottom: The Special Education Staff. SCHOOL SERVICE Without the secretaries, office workers, cafeteria workers, and custodians, the school would not be able to operate properly. The secretaries and office workers handle the school budget, organize parent-teacher conferences, distribute lockers, and keep the attendence records in order. Their list of duties is never ending. The cafeteria workers both prepare and serve the food at the snack bars. They pay their own wages and benefits. Then there are the custodians who do various tasks. The stage is set, the bond starts playing, suddenly your heart is pounding, wishing secretly you were a star. But don't be fooled by the radio, the T.V. or the magazines, they'll show you photographs, of how your life should be, but they're someone else’s fantasy. So if you think your life is complete confusion, cause you never win the game, just remember that it's a Grand Illusion, and deep inside we're all the same. America spells competition, join us in our blind ambition get yourself a brand new motor car. But someday soon we ll stop to ponder, what on earth’s this spell we're under, we make the grade and still we wonder, who the hell we are! styx 284 Post ages are often known by some major force that dominated the lives of the people who live during that —the Ice Age, Feudal Age, Industrial Revolution, the Age of Discovery and so forth. Historians of the future may look back on us in the early 1980's and label us the Media Age. Time-use studies have shown that the average high school student has spent more time with mass media (T.V., movies, radio, records, books and magazines) than with any other single ac- tivity except sleep. «Jeffrey Schrank 285 One thing that all Editors hove always hod in common is their goal to create the best book ever. I hove modified this in trying to create the best book to my ability. The work that has gone into this book has brought the staff of twenty two close together with shored traumas and triumphs and finally a sense of accomplishment. A yearbook is more than o conglomeration of pictures highlighting the events of a school year. A good yearbook captures the spirit of the school - its accomplish- ments, its failures and the feeling of unity in its students. I fee! we hove achieved this. With the help of the especially dedicated few on the staff, who consis- tently proved their concern ond ideas, we have created a book to be proud of. I have to offer my deepest thanks to these people who really made the MADRONO 1981 a possibility. To Nick Wright and all of the photographers who put in an extra effort, your work has created the visual catalyst that will moke it possible to look back on this yeor and remember the times at this school. To Joy Kalar, Ruth White, Lobin Hinton and Mory Schonher, your hard work made a vital part of this book ond your skill and dedication is something you can be proud of. To Jeannie Crumly, who checked ond re-checked and often re-wrote many pages of copy. I appreciate oil of your help and care. I also owe an extreme debt of graditude to the excellent work of Todd Foreman in this book. His drawings tied together.the theme of the book and brought an extra dimension to its contents. Also thank you to the numerous staff members and outside help. You each put a little of yourselves in to make this an outstanding annual.
