That can you say about this year's Vikings ex- :ept Fantastic? Coming off an 0-10 season, rith the help of a great new coach, the team inished tied for third place with Carlmont, :ompiling a 5-3 record in SPAL play. This ear's offense came to life, outscoring its jpponents by an average 26-14. Aided by an utstanding front line. Quarterback Greg San- ;ier and his runners actually had time and oom to work. While Sancier completed almost 0% of his passes for a total of 858 yards, )an Boyett was leading the SPAL in touch- lowns with 12, and gaining 726 yards. Also tiding the attack was Vince Daily, who had a labit of running punts back great distances, tod the defense? Against Ravenswood, they iropped the quarterback 11 times. At San Car- .os, they stopped the Dons three times on fourth and one. Need I say more? The bigger they come the harder they fall -Bob Fitzsimmons Power is where power goes. -Lyndon B. Johnson Junior Princess Dee Imsand Homecoming '72 ig Game Pancake Breakfast If Senior Queen Nancy Jones Water Polo After a fine 10-4 season and second place in the SPAL, Paly's waterpolo men went on to the North- ern California Invitational Tourn- ament, losing to two of the top teams in the nation, and winning against Mt- Pleasant. The season had its high points and its low ones, such as the loss to Sequoia, but overall the team played very well. Led continually by All-League selections Wes Raffel and Jim Hamilton on offense, the Vikes also played well on defense, thanks to Jon Buurma, junior Robert Door, and All-League Honorable Men- tion Goalie George Ulvang. Other standouts include Bill Strubbe and Norm Miede. Coach Paul Bataille is hoping for another good showing next year with a fine flock of returning swimmers. Evarts C D Seated: Glen Kasper, Rich Adam, Bob Tanabe, John Kirk, Dave Finkel. Standing: Manager Rich Varone, Steve Feller, Del Carter, John Jenks. Missing: Mike Ackerman, Doug Stephens. Paly's 1972 version of C D basketball was rather disappointing: Coach Clem Wiser had only ten men on his squad, and not enough D's to field a team in that division. In the C division, the Mini-Vikes were led in scoring by John Kirk and Steve Feller, and the defense was commanded by Captain and MVP Del Carter. While Steve Feller was breaking Tony Hughes' personal foul record with 34, the Mini- Vikes chalked up a 2-5 record. J.V. Football Coach: Ray Wesner Assistant Coach: Ed Hart Team: Although the JV's finished only seventh in the SPAL with a 2-6 record, the statistics were decieving. Both their victories were convincing; they smashed M-A 20-6, and Ravens- wood 40-6. Coach Wesner be- lieved that his team improved greatly every game, and that their record did not show their true ability. Overall the team was led by Quarterback Kyle Eaton, Tim Evans, Jay Cole, and Halfback Joe Petrovich, all of whom should play well for next year's varsity. The varsity team was sparked by Doug Peck, who placed third in the Region Two Mudbath. Also running well for the varsity were Junior Sean Donovan, and sometimes. Senior Ed Chan. The real surprise, however, came in the sophomore division, with Chris Grundmann taking first place in Region Two, A1 Kenrick following a close second, and George Chan finishing a respectful ninth. In league play, the underdog Vikings pulled off upsets over Ravenswood, Gunn, and in overtime, M.A. The teams most discour- aging losses came in close games with Gunn and Sequoia. The Vikes were led by sharpshooting Herb Rhodes, Melvin Grimes, who was deadly from the top of the key, and high scorer Jim Kranz- thor. Also turning in key performances were Ken Peterson, big man John Arm- strong, Steve DePangher alias Danny Heater, Randy Scott, and Jim Wookey. A strong bench was led by Gordon Iki and Vince Dailey. On the season, the team lost but one game, and came out on top of the league With the help of Ken White, who came out of retirement to coach again, the Vikes were inspired by the play of Ralph Kanz, Jim Brown, and Jerry Weisburg Kyle Eaton, a sophomore, also played well consis- tently Congrats to all the J V.'s. Starting out with high hopes, and lots of talent the Vikings should have made the Shaugnessy play offs without too much trouble. As things went, however, they controlled the field and not the nets, letting up too many goals and not scoring enough. Leading scorer Greg Sancier and forward Chris Wynn sparked the offense, and great defens was played by Dave Johnson, but the Vikes could only eke out one win. Combined with a forfeit by Gunn, the record stood at 2-4-2. Better luck next year? SOCCER The sophomores went through the season on an even note, coining up with a record of 3-1-4, good enough to make the league playoffs.
