Wlk ... ‘dmfi paced by the balanced scoring of jon white, the mini-vikes of clem wiser and company ended the season with an impressive 3-5 win-loss record, jon white who led the team in scoring was selected second team all-league, led by the scoring and rebounding of dick stull the d's could only muster up 1 win in 9 tries. c d basketball gale bailey jon barrie art christman bill colt man paul corazza jack de gagne sean donnelley pat gunn bob huie bob lerch doug letter roger mckay john morrissey john mustain mikenarr boboberfell mark soluta greg swartz jon white john yee mark florant mgr, jim smith mgr. to describe this year's football team you could use many adjectives and any one would work, closing out their season in fine style by beating sequoia 13-7, coach bill donohuewill hope this winning spirit that paly has always had will come back to the campus in September, as this year's team was led by a strong defense there was no real break away threat on offense as paly has always had in past years, as the offense got going they would always find a way not to score when they got inside their opponent's twenty yard line, a unique ability of this team was they could get up for any game they wanted to. their scores were always close and they never gave up until the final gun sounded, even after games they had time left for extra-curricular activities, it was a pretty successful season as the green and white turned in a 4-3-1 league record, the defense was the proud part of the vikes' game, it was spearheaded by linebacker george barrall, tackle spencer jewel I, and defensive end don (reader) read, read was voted to the 1st team all-league at defensive end. the defensive play on the whole was very encouraging as they stopped top players around the league, the offense was led by the receiving of jeff munks and the quarterbacking of karl aldinger. the line play on offense was led by all-league selection spencer jewell at tackle, george barrall and wayne alien at guards and Steve bushnell at the other tackle made up the rest of the offensive line, as munks was catching passes, he was also winning the receiving title and earning an all-league spot, aldinger sparked the team all over the field with his great passing and ran the opt ion well, next year's hopes look bright as some good sophs will be coming up to fill the holes left by this year's seniors, with aldinger and'crane coming back in the backfield, the chances of a title at paly next year are not far off. as this year's team might go down in history as having one of the poorer records while at paly, they won't leave paly with nothing, they have defeated sequoia two years in a row and that's what the whole season is built up for, the little big game. varsity football karl dldinger greg geiger wayne alien roger heap larry bailey mikeherling george barrall peteherndon mark bitted irk paul ho steve bushnell ron hoffacker rickcohen darrell iki tom cooper spencer jewell john crane bruce johnson jerry duncan doug kirk john koo rich laz areschi jeff long doug may field john milburn jeff munks st eve owens sieve payne lito portillo john preston don read john sevey jeff shaffer steve kemoto johntt ashi mikeva patten rob wilsc n jeff woodward doug morse mgr. coaches bill donohue jimshroyer ed hart spirit week s -, 1 kiser jr. princess—laurie cubbiscm ph. princess—janice dutton senior homecoming queen .• i m-% sparked by the overall play of karl aldinger the vikes rolled over the cherks from sequoia in the turkey day classic, as the vikes were defeating the visiting squaws a crowd of over 10,000 was lookingon. sequoia scored first but the vikes came back on the arm of aldinger to munks bringing the crowd to their feet, aldinger mastered the drive the rest of the way as he gave to crane and the vikes were on the board, as the defense was holding sequoia to just a few yards paly got the ball back in their own territory, the green and white machine put one mo re score on the board before intermission, aldingerscrambled in forthescore andthen put the ball through theup-rights making thescore 13-7. that was the way it stood at halftime and again when the final gun sounded, as aldinger was receiving the player of the game award, coach bill donohue called it a team effort, it was not dry in palo alto that four day weekend. T7T craig anderson wait barret bill boyett ■ ... david john k tr iunjohos 1- . 7- rick Johnson , „ ie f mCaWiner , ; y - lathes rrrantW ' . , V'7 •■- ■ ■•1 i 1 tAfwftartln rouri efnutphy Jsl s nfpbiry' .ejcpopp lOhn pali I geoffsmit bill valfem arry wilspn govan mgr. while wait barret was winning the scoring title in the s.p.a.I. and setting a new league record the rest of the team was just watching from the stands, the vikes posted a 6-2 record which captured third place, wait barret and brit harvey both earned first team all-league spots, larry wilson took a second team spot, while david john and dan hagemann received honorable mentions. this year's soph water polo team was led by the scoring of Steve baxter and the defense of boyd haigtft. baxter threw in 75 goals to capture the scoring title in thes.jxa.L as baxter was tossipg in his league setting pace the team could only scrape up a77J s.p.a.l. record, tom greeley, robmocwe, and dan dole also recorded softie scores, M if you were looking for a balanced water polo team in the '69 season you could have found one at paloalto high, paly was the team as they captured 2nd spot in thes.p.a.l. standings. thesplashers from paly high were so balanced that only mike pen dletoryriade first team all-league, the green and white machine made it to thec.c , finals, they put up a good fight but were defeated, the vikes were handicapped, not having a pool to practice or play games in. thev practiced at foothill and played their home games at vyilbur. as paly took second place in the . -L' some basketball seasons go down to the last game and some even to the last seconds, paly found out the hard way as they missed the s.p.a.L playoffs by seconds, on the last night of the league season the vikes faced a do or die situation, cubberley defeated the vikes 46-44 before a packed house at georgeStewart gym. paly played well in pre-season games as they won 9 and lost only 3. the vikes went on to earn an overall record of 13-7. coach clem wiser's quint hit a cold shooting sequoia team and buried thecherks easily and then went on to defeat gunn. they tasted their first league defeat at the hands of ravenswood but then bounced back to defeat menlo-atherton in probably their best league display, they were then stung by a hot shooting san carlos team and three days later were beaten by a taller woodsideteam. with winning in mind, larry bailey came back to handle carlmont as he was 10 for 12 from the floor and also canned 4 free throws for a 24 point performance, also managing to grab 18 rebounds, the whole season then went down to the last game against cross town rival cubberley. bailey captured a second team all-league spot and dick Salisbury, the most consistent vike, received an honorable mention, phil moore led the vikes in scoring with a 13.1 average followed by Salisbury, 12.6, bailey, 11.1, and dave wertz, 10.1. the vikes were a very balanced team as you can see by the scoring, but they hit a balanced year with a strong league, lito portillo rounded out the rest of the first five, bob wax, matt sanders, and lew robinson saw lots of action and all figured in on the final results. • -
