varsity football team 35 wayne alien 65 george barrall 71 art bridges 77 steve bushnell 60 chuck butler 55 dean cardoza 75 mark cohen 54 eric cohen 40 jim courant 15 ian davies 62 tred eyer 76 davefrykman 24 rich garratt 20 gary gulbrandsen 12 steve harper 81 jim himes 86 ron hoffacker 33 john hostetter 73 spencer jewell 22 garykrause 41 eric lane 79 carl merner 80 Jeff munks 50 boris pleshakov 42 lito portillo 10 john preston 21 don reed 70 john sevey 64 pete shaw 66 bob slack 52 pete vanpatten 84 rick whipple 63 rob wilson 34 jeff woodward managers bill gruber craig murphy nate schafer eric walhstrom coaches bill donahue jim shroyer mike pavko varsity football after two tough non-league losses the mighty vikes were ready for league play, in the s.p.aJ. opener our norsemen couldn't get on track until the fourth quarter, but neither could their oppenents woodside. when the final gun was sounded the wildcats from woodside were ahead on the score- board 21-7 and thats what matters, in the second quarter of the woodside game gary gulbrandsen ran back a punt for a tuchdown, but there was a clip and it was called back and the half ended with no score, still trying to get their first win of the season the vikes battled a big carlmont team, gary krause sparked the mighty eleven to their first win of the season at a 16-13 count, krause was great on the grid iron as he intercepted 2 passes and recovered a fumble, but it was rick whipple's toe that did it, with 24 seconds left whipple kicked a 23 yard field goal and a stunning 16-13 win. paly found out how good it felt to win as they crushed their next two oppenents. starting with san carlos it was the defense that stopped the dons, but nobody could stop john hostetter as he rambled for 3 touchdowns in a 30-8 win. the vikes kept running as fast as the offensive line would open them, gary gulbrandsen ran menlo-atherton out of hod ray field before the final gun had sounded, gul- brandsen who ran for 5 touchdowns and tied the league record until the same day at gunn bill norberg also scored 5 touchdowns and kicked 3 extra points, the senior halfback who had runs of 6,15,27,71 and a 81 yard punt return was voted player of the week by northern California sports writ- ers for his great showing aganist menlo-atherton. gulbrandsen who was the only player to make all-league both offense and defense was also voted most valuble player by his teammates for the 68' season, comming off two decisive wins the norsemen were flying high but the cougars from cubberley must have been ten feet higher as the cougars clawed paly 13-2. coach jim shroyer commented briefly and said they were flat after the three wins in a row but cubberley played a good game, john hostetter played a good game on defense as he made 22 tackles.hostetter was one of the top linebackers in the league, he was awarded all-league honors at his position, it was a special game for lito portillo as the vikes went up against gunn. portillo moved from the gunn district at the end of the ninth grade, the junior signal caller wanted as he passed for 3 touchdowns and took one in himself for a tallie. as he was collecting his bets he added to his earnings stickney's player of the week award, beating gunn 29-6 was a great comeback after the stunning loss to cubberley the week before, coach bill donahue praised lito portillo for his great poise, after a weeks rest the vikes came up against a weak rushing trojan team.playing in poor conditions the vikes held ravenswood to-2 yards rushing, the vikes just went through the motions on the quag mire, they posted a 9-0 win against ravenswood but nothing to be proud of. there was a more important game going on as woodside and sequoia were battling for the title, woodside stopped a sequoia second half surge and won the game 14-12 and the title went with them too, as the game was going on barr curry sequoia's great tailback had suffered a hip pointer and would be a sure factor in the little big game on thanksgiving day. with a weeks rest inbetween the real nitty grity each team will have time to heal up. paly knew they could beat sequoia if they stopped bar curry sequoia's great tailback.
