s.p.aJ. opener our norsemen couldn't get on track until the fourth quarter, but neither could their oppenents woodside. when the final gun was sounded the wildcats from woodside were ahead on the score- board 21-7 and thats what matters, in the second quarter of the woodside game gary gulbrandsen ran back a punt for a tuchdown, but there was a clip and it was called back and the half ended with no score, still trying to get their first win of the season the vikes battled a big carlmont team, gary krause sparked the mighty eleven to their first win of the season at a 16-13 count, krause was great on the grid iron as he intercepted 2 passes and recovered a fumble, but it was rick whipple's toe that did it, with 24 seconds left whipple kicked a 23 yard field goal and a stunning 16-13 win. paly found out how good it felt to win as they crushed their next two oppenents. starting with san carlos it was the defense that stopped the dons, but nobody could stop john hostetter as he rambled for 3 touchdowns in a 30-8 win. the vikes kept running as fast as the offensive line would open them, gary gulbrandsen ran menlo-atherton out of hod ray field before the final gun had sounded, gul- brandsen who ran for 5 touchdowns and tied the league record until the same day at gunn bill norberg also scored 5 touchdowns and kicked 3 extra points, the senior halfback who had runs of 6,15,27,71 and a 81 yard punt return was voted player of the week by northern California sports writ- ers for his great showing aganist menlo-atherton. gulbrandsen who was the only player to make all-league both offense and defense was also voted most valuble player by his teammates for the 68' season, comming off two decisive wins the norsemen were flying high but the cougars from cubberley must have been ten feet higher as the cougars clawed paly 13-2. coach jim shroyer commented briefly and said they were flat after the three wins in a row but cubberley played a good game, john hostetter played a good game on defense as he made 22 tackles.hostetter was one of the top linebackers in the league, he was awarded all-league honors at his position, it was a special game for lito portillo as the vikes went up against gunn. portillo moved from the gunn district at the end of the ninth grade, the junior signal caller wanted as he passed for 3 touchdowns and took one in himself for a tallie. as he was collecting his bets he added to his earnings stickney's player of the week award, beating gunn 29-6 was a great comeback after the stunning loss to cubberley the week before, coach bill donahue praised lito portillo for his great poise, after a weeks rest the vikes came up against a weak rushing trojan team.playing in poor conditions the vikes held ravenswood to-2 yards rushing, the vikes just went through the motions on the quag mire, they posted a 9-0 win against ravenswood but nothing to be proud of. there was a more important game going on as woodside and sequoia were battling for the title, woodside stopped a sequoia second half surge and won the game 14-12 and the title went with them too, as the game was going on barr curry sequoia's great tailback had suffered a hip pointer and would be a sure factor in the little big game on thanksgiving day. with a weeks rest inbetween the real nitty grity each team will have time to heal up. paly knew they could beat sequoia if they stopped bar curry sequoia's great tailback. — sophomore football this years sophomore football team was very strong offensively and de- fensively. a few bad breaks turned against the mini-vikes as they ended the season with a 5-3 record in league play, in two of the vikes three losses they held their opponents scoreless in the second half, but that doesn't win games when you are to far behind in the first half, the vikes powerful offensive threat was quarterback carl aldinger, voted most valu- able by his teammates, aldinger a threat to run or pass proved this in many games as he threw bombs to his ends jeff long and ron hinckley. his running threat was just as strongas he executed some beautiful boot- legs. coach jay vierra had to pat carl aldinger on the back and say that he called 75° o of the plays and 90% of the touchdowns, as for the rest of the running game it was taken up by john crane and mike herling and pete vogl, the running threat was slowed down some what in most of the games as one of the runners would be on the sidelines, the defense was headed by the play of hard hitting jerry duncan and doug mayfield. the defense was awarded with two of the wins as in the gunn game the defense forced the gunn quarterback into his own endzone and his knee touched down for a saftey and a 9-7 win. on a rain soaked hod ray field the defense was superb as the offensive couldn't do a thing, but they didn't have to as the defense recovered a fumble in the endzone and then drove the trojan quarterback out of the endzone, and a 8-0 defensive win. most valuable player carl aldinger led all rushers with front row; dennis barnette, gary windslow, pete heSRaon, rafph bradley, pete vogl, sieve owens, jerry duncan, john haley, jeff schaffer, john department aldinger completed 41 of 110 passes for 483 yards having his big day in the sequoia game as he passed for 305 yards, aldingers leading recievers were ron hinckley with 8 catches for 157 yards, in tackles mike herling led with 42 followed by geiger and crane with 35 each, coach jay vierra commented and said that carl aldinger, doug mayfield, jerry duncan, john crane, and jeff long are bringing you live and in color today's turkey day classic ball game, well, from up here in the press box it looks like paly is really gonna sock it to sequoia, before our telecast began today there was a two-mile track race between paly and sequoia, sorry you missed out on that, but paly won the race easily, i guess you missed the coin toss, too, but just to set you up to date, sequoia has de- cided to receive, well, there's the kick-off, and palo alto is hitting much too hard as far as the purple-and-white viking eaters are concerned, there's gulbrandsen on the first downs with the ball inside the sequoia twenty yard line, there's the gong, and the first half ends with the score sequoia nothing, palo alto nothing, well, fans, it's a great day here for football, the sky is deeply blue clear, the temperature is in the high 60's, and humidity 32.5 and rising, coach bill donohue is leading the alto palo team off the field now, most likely uh, and here comes the toot-toot paly band with drum major andy boyett, right behind them miss lee israel as baton girl, leading her letter girls, i guess these card stunts are about the best i've seen here at Stanford since the 1938 game between syosset and milpitas oops, here are the teams on the field again, and there's the gong, se- quoia kicks and paly receives the ball, and oh, fans, what a run. sixty-four yards in ten plays! man oh man. friends, paly is hitting as hard as he can, with a mag- nificient sweep by hostetter and a nice block by bush- nell, taking the vikes all the way down to the sequoia nine yard line, from here on in it looks like raw blocking and guts as read powers it into the end zone from nine yards out. man, just listen to the crowd roar! now whip- pie kicks and it's go baby go putting p.a. ahead seven to nothing, now sequoia fumbles, and the vikings recover the ball on redwood city's twenty-four yard line, fourth down, there's whipple again man what a kick! the fans jump to their feet, from thirty-two yeards out whip- ple puts the ball straight through the up-rights and now the crowd is shouting out the last few seconds of the game. the kick is good! the score is ten to nothing, in favor of palo alto, oh whatta game, let's listen to the crowd ten eight seven five three two one and there's the gong! alto palo once again wins the turkey-and-cranberry annual here at Stanford sta- dium. the crowd has spilled onto the field racing for the goal posts, and are apparently tearing down both of them, you can be sure it will be a happy day here in p.a. after this pop upset over redwood city, the crowd has gone wild i've just been handed a note saying don read has been selected as most valuable player of the game, well, that's about it from here, so this is tom bom- badillo signing off, reminding you that'when you want some fun, sing obla di bla da!' thank you.
