Mr RuppM Printipol Message for the Madrono Botanists fell us that each leaf on every tree is different. Each tree is as unique as its leaves. Each individual is as unique as his fingerprints. Labels cannot obscure his indi- viduality. He may be a Nebraskan or Californian, but these names do not describe him, they merely sort him. The leaf or fingerprint is individual; symbolic of the uniqueness of every personality. Our philosophy of government from its beginning, our deepest convictions and our highest ideals have sought to clothe the individual with a sense of dignity, to recognize his potentialities, to releose his creative powers and stimu- late his initiative. If was on this platform that Jefferson, Adams, Lincoln and Wilson rose to greatness. This should also be the goal of each Paly staff member and each student. Are we retreating from these ideals which have made American citizenship the envy of much of the world; the heritage that America has so well guarded, full personal development in ways suited to each man's nature? I wish to express my gratitude and appreciation to Miss Claire Kellogg, editor of the Madrono and to the staff; to Miss Susan Payne, Commissioner of Publications and to Mr. Jerry Alexander, sponsor of the Madrono staff, for their creative ability, cooperation and hard work in pro- ducing fbe 1964 Madrono. Ray P. Ruppel Principal 17
