PALO ALTO HIGH SCHOOL LIBRARY MADRONO 1963 Palo Alto Senior High School Palo Alto, California As students of Palo Alto High School we are concerned with the pattern which we follow from day to day and year to year. It is a form of regularity which provides us with time to learn, to grow and mature. There are a few who do not complete the pat- tern and there are some who attempt to break it, but most of us recognize its necessity. We realize that we must prepare ourselves for the much bigger pattern which involves our community, country, and the world. In order to be able to fit into this larger pattern we must achieve success on our own. The 1963 Madrono has been developed around the theme: Patterns and Interpre- tation. It has combined the elements needed for our pattern, but the interpretation and understanding is left to you. 2 Jane Israel Editor DEDICATION IN MEMORIAM Jack Herbert Lillard Mr. Lillard taught mathematics and chemistry at Paly for five years, and he also coached a suc- cessful tennis team. During his short stay with us he was a good friend of many, and gained the respect of all. Paly has suffered a great loss at his passing, and it is with deep appreciation for his inspired teaching and his unfailing service to Palo Alto High School that we dedicate the 1963 Madrono in the memory of Mr. Jack Lillard. The Jack Lillard Family 3 ACTIVITIES Mr. Ruppel Principal ADMIN MADRONO This past summer I had the opportunity to participate in a humanities seminar. I mean by this that I studied subjects which deal with man thinking, with man creating. I studied history as it deals with concepts and ideas, rather than chronology and facts. I studied art and architecture that helped me to think deeply about mankind. I studied music that was more than rock and roll; if helped me to feel how others feel. I studied liter- ature that was chosen because it was the best that man has created; not because it was easy to read, or short or sensa- tional. I tell you this because I think that one of the greatest ex- periences anyone can have is to sit in a small class with o great teacher. From such teachers, you grasp that meaning of pleasure in work. There are few greater lessons you can learn. I wish to express my appreciation and that of the staff of Paly to Miss Jane Israel. Editor of the Madrono, and to her staff; to Miss Betty Brothers, Commissioner of Publications and to Mr. Jerry Alexander, Madrono sponsor, for their dedication and work in producing the 1963 Madrono. There were no glowing advance reports and best ever predictions; it was supposed to be a nice class, with the usual share of scholars, leaders, and problem kids. It has indeed been a nice class - - and much more. Here are some reasons why it was a grossly underrated class: three years of strong, ener- getic, and imaginative leadership in class officers and council; a surprising show of academic strength in class work, in Nationol Merit competition, and in College Board scores; a never-ending supply of leaders who have made student government and school organizations more meaningful and effective than ever before,- a dedication and fierce competitive spirit whi :h led to a football championship; a courteous, warm-hearted, gorgeously matured class personality that has sweetened this old place and exalted it. The Class of 1963 was no ordinary class. We know it now. Billy Davis Senior Class Advisor 14 SENIOR CLASS COUNCIL Front Row: N, Robiion. D. Brumbaugh, S. Fong. M. BoÂŤr. $ Ker. Back Row: D. Woplcs, A. lovele  . J. Wornlot, T. Browne, E. Jone , E. Abilin. SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Throughout its three years at Palo Alto High School, the Class of '63 has consistently demonstrated outstanding qualities of leadership, participation, and personality. In our sophomore year, under the fine leadership of Paul Reinhardt, president; Mary Newton, vice-president; and Nancy Moris, secretary; the class council raised money in several ways, including the selling of coffee at night school. Other members of the class began selling programs at football and basketball games, a project that continued for three years. Our junior class was headed by president David Duisenberg; vice-president Judy Ammann; and secretary Joan Miller. In addition to selling coffee, the class put in long hours working on our Junior Prom, Neapolitan Night, which proved to be a very successful dance. As seniors, we saw our team beat Sequoia and win the S.P.A.L. Championship for the first time in four years! Doug Waples was elected class president; Sue Ker, vice- president; and Nancy Robison, secretary. These officers, along with the Senior Class Council, made our last year a memorable one. Our Senior Boll, held at the Menlo Circus Club, began the round of graduation activities which would end our stay at Paly. Finals, the Senior Picnic, and at last. Graduation and Grad Night . . . then the time for the Class of '63 to say good-bye. We hope we have left some of our spirit and personality behind us, and that we will be remembered, as we will remember Paly. 15 WILTON ROBERT ABBOTT 1. Pholoqrophy Club 2. Dave Johnson, Commissioner of Public Welfare, headed the Board of Welfare which spent many hours serving the school and enforcing student body law. Sociable Lund Johnson has kept Paly's dances at a high level, and through the efforts of Ken Rohrs more Student Body Cards have been sold than ever before. This year. Paly has a student government publication. The Viking, thanks to Publications Com- missioner Betty Brother. Student Body President An excellent Little Sister Program and a fine Jinx were possible through the efforts of Edie Kirk, our Girls' Activities Commissioner. John Alexander kept Boys' Activities interesting and provided several sub- stantial contributions to Scholarships with the money earned from selling Football and Basketball pro- grams. Girls' and Boys' sports activities were run smoothly and efficiently by Mary Newton and Jim Williams. Finally, all Commissioners took part in the codifying of the Lawbook, a mammoth project which provides organization and simplicity to Paly's student government laws. The year was an extremely fruitful one for the Student Court, which was composed of Chief Justice Nick Robinson, and Associate Justices Dove Duisenberg, John Warnlof, Hank Wilmer, and Jim Novelli. This year's Court was a Court of innovation - - the court docket was dittoed and the Court Rules of Procedure were amended. LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL 82 STUDENT COURT Jim Novelli, John Wornlof, Chief Justice Nick Robinson, Hank Wil- mer, Dave Duisenberg. This year's Court was a Court of determination. In spite of the Campanile's charges, in spite of mis- cellaneous students telling the Court how to run itself, in spite of the rantings of the Prosecution during trials. Paly's Honorable Student Court came through unscathed. Above all, the Court was equitable. It kept fore- most in its mind the quotation of that eminent jurist. Some critics felt that he couldn't compete with the feminine plan- ning of the past, but Lund Johnson and the girls on the Social Planning Committee have done a terrific job on this year's activities. The task of producing a record of people, organizations, and events at Palo Alto High School took hours of planning, designing, composing, photo- graphing, and compiling. Scheduling of pictures, collecting information for copy, and obtaining identifications were all part of the job of producing a history of student life. Ever-present deadlines hovered over every hour of work for everyone; and, when the last page was sent in, a feeling of relief and satis- faction. Led by a crushing rushing offense and the best defensive line in the area. Paly compiled a 6-1 league mark and was 8-1 overall. Menlo-Atherton fell first in league play on muddy Hod Ray Field 19-0. The following week, the Vikes surprised everyone but themselves in disposing of Woodside 31-0. Ravenswood put up stiff resistance but finally was defeated 20-6. San Carlos, the Vikes fourth straight league victim, fell 40-19 but the score could easily have been much larger for Paly. Carlmont then pulled a major upset by squeeking by 19-18. A re- vamped Vike team came back the following week to put down Cubberley 13-7. Thanksgiving Day, Paly finally captured the league crown which had evaded them for so many years. Palyâs troops ran through Sequoia 20-13 to make everyoneâs turkey taste good. Four Vike gridders captured all-SPAl honors. Cap placed on the all-midpeninsula dream team with Wilmer. Wilmer was sensational both offensively and defensively. Heaney was regarded the area's best blocker and failed to make all-peninsula only because he wasnât around for the banquet. Others playing a major role included Jim Skoog, Steve Boysol, both top ends; Keith Hart, 2nd team all-SPAL; Bob Brakesman, honorable mention; Larry Lomax the Vikes signal caller; Larry Hamilton, jitterbug halfback; Tim Barnes, honorable mention; and Dave Hinckley, fine re- ceiver and rusher. VARSITY WATER POLO Paly's varsity water polo mermen swam away with a second place SPAL finish, led by Karl McCrary, Coach Paul Bataillc's team compiled a highly successful 5-1 league mark. Small but speedy Karl McCrary earned a deserving spot on the SPAl team ranking while Bruce Johnston, Rob- in Durrand, and Doug Waples received honorable men- tion. Other senior stalwarts included Tom Post, Paul Rein- hardt, Jim Thoits, Bill Haslacher, Dave Duisenberg, John Warnloft, and Bob Gardner. Paly's soph mermen produced many fine prospects for next year's varsity. In compiling a 3-3 seasonal league mark, good for an SPAl third, the sophs continually played exciting ball. led by all-SPAl'er Pete Siebert and second learner Robin Waples, the high- scoring squad was a credit to Palo Alto. Under dynamic coach Larry Bross and assistant Ken White, the hard working team com- piled a 3-4 markâgood for an SPAL fifth ranking. As many losses were due to costly bumbles, the won-loss record might easily hove been better. Standouts included Mike Moreno, John Wilmer, Chris Clark, Joel Hedberg, and Chris Karabats. The sophs most outstanding triumph came over league champion Woodside. Brossâ troops upset the âCats 5-0. Other wins came at the hands of Ravens- wood and San Carlos. The stars mentioned and many others should supply an abundance of fine material for Coach Mercer on the varsity. Under Coach Anthony Trijullo, the B's win-lose record left much to be desired but desire was vividly apparent in all efforts. Little Dennis Sheppard was the team's top scorer amazing all with his long casts. Dennie Milligan controlled the boards. Wayne Carruth, John Robinson, Danny Edson, Bill Norman, Dan Vrana, and Bruce John- son saw most of tho action. The others, Byron Mellberg, Wayne Zavosky, Dennis Omelka, and Dennis McGhie also saw considerable as the squad was so equally ba- lanced that a starting five was tough to decide.
