Caroline Brown was born in Palo Alto and attended Addison, Jordan, and Paly. Had it not been for an unfortunate automobile accident in the summer of 1957, Caroline would be graduating with our Class of 1959. Caroline's sister Margaret, a Paly grad, was also killed in that accident. Caroline was interested in music; she played the piano and sang in the Paly choir. She loved hiking and went on several pack trips. She was a member of the L.T.A. and during her sophomore year was historian for the club. She was a member of C.S.F. She was very interested in history and was planning to go into some field of social service work. In memory of her, her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Leland Brown, have set up the Caroline Brown Memorial which is to be awarded each year to a junior student who has done outstanding work in United States History. It is with sadness and a sense of loss that we dedicate this Madrono to Caroline Brown.

Paly students are privileged to receive their education in one of the finest high schools and from one of the most competent and dedi- cated faculties in the United States. I hope the seniors who are graduating will make every effort to uphold the fine reputation and the high achievement of the thousands of alumni who have created this rich tradition. There are unlimited opportunities in Paly for underclassmen. Take advantage of them. In this way you can make your contribution to the improvement of the school and community. I wish to express my appreciation and that of the staff to Mr. Jack Schump, Madrono Editor, and his staff; to Mr. David Steinhart, Com- missioner of Publications, and to Mr. Sanford Gum, Madrono sponsor, for their creativity and hours of work in producing the 1959 Madrono. 4 Ray P. Ruppel
