Had it not been for an unfortunate automobile accident in the summer of 1957, Caroline would be graduating with our Class of 1959. Caroline's sister Margaret, a Paly grad, was also killed in that accident. Caroline was interested in music; she played the piano and sang in the Paly choir. She loved hiking and went on several pack trips. She was a member of the L.T.A. and during her sophomore year was historian for the club. She was a member of C.S.F. She was very interested in history and was planning to go into some field of social service work. In memory of her, her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Leland Brown, have set up the Caroline Brown Memorial which is to be awarded each year to a junior student who has done outstanding work in United States History. It is with sadness and a sense of loss that we dedicate this Madrono to Caroline Brown. !£' j t- J «. V e « • -- ■  ■ -’ • y -• WV y -f fl V ' ■ . C fS j ,J } Cg_ V ; ? Gr«K' V Paly students are privileged to receive their education in one of the finest high schools and from one of the most competent and dedi- cated faculties in the United States. I hope the seniors who are graduating will make every effort to uphold the fine reputation and the high achievement of the thousands of alumni who have created this rich tradition. There are unlimited opportunities in Paly for underclassmen. Take advantage of them. In this way you can make your contribution to the improvement of the school and community. I wish to express my appreciation and that of the staff to Mr. Jack Schump, Madrono Editor, and his staff; to Mr. David Steinhart, Com- missioner of Publications, and to Mr. Sanford Gum, Madrono sponsor, for their creativity and hours of work in producing the 1959 Madrono. 4 Ray P. As Sophomores we stood in wonderment of the big green halls and in awe of our upperclassmen who seemed so big and sophisticated. Starting the year by electing our class officers, Dick Ahworth, president; Steve Rothert, vice-president, and Becky Thatcher, secretary, we knew that we were getting in the swing of things. Our girls joined the social clubs of their choice and began to get acquainted with the upper- classmen. The Class of '59 got well under way when It presented Bermuda Ball. This dance was a great success and a lot of fun since everyone came dressed in bermudas. .We helped R.I.F. put on their Luau (the last one for a while). ... As Juniors our boys took part in varsity football, which ranked second in SPAL, basketball, track, cross country, wrestling and swimming. We elected Steve Rothert president, Bonnie Brigham, vice-president, and Pat Farr, secretary for the year. The highlight of the year was Rhythm at the Ritz, the Junior Prom. ... As Seniors we took over the spotlight which we had been working for the past two years. In sports we took SPAL Championship in basketball, cross country and wrestling. Also our Cross Country team won the National Cross Country Champion- ship (thanks to George Linn). As we close the pages of our stay at Paly with the Senior Ball, our traditional Senior Week and Grad Night, we will never forget what Paly has shown us. This project raised enough money to rent the film The Wild One. The movie proved to be one of the largest fund raising projects for the Junior Prom. The auditorium was filled for the show and all proceeds went to their dance of the year — the Junior Prom. Candy canes and mistletoe were a common sight in the halls of Paly at Christmas time and, of course, the Junior Class was in back of this with high-toned spirit. In March the long awaited Junior Prom, the biggest dance project of the year for the class, came and will remain in the minds of the many who attended it. Committees of Juniors struggled to make the ball the best of this year. Even in their sophomore year the class was working towards this goal by having a party in which they were the only ones out of three classes that made any profit this way. Their one penny profit went towards the ball. Emerald Ball was the most sparkling dance of the year. After the 1959 Prom the class did not stop moving. Every minute fund raising projects for I960 were being devised. Plans by Juniors are now being formulated for their terrific senior year to be. First Row: L. Shidler, P. Bowman, M. Reiland, R. The first semester's work included units in games, dance, dramatics, camping, music, etc. The sec- ond semester involved more active participation in badminton, tennis, hockey and basketball. Ap- proximately 35 girls were in this class. 81 TWELVE-0-FIVE 82 83 No high school ever had a better friend than Paly's T C. The Paly Varsity had a tough season this year losing five, tying one, and winning only one of their games. They started out the season on a high note by defeating Los Altos 14-7 in a non-league game. Then they traveled to Carlmont where a hard fought but mistake-filled contest ended in a six to six tie. After these first two contests Paly fell into a slump, losing their last five contests. Although their win loss record was not good, there were many outstanding individual performances. Bob Talbott was commended for his fine work at full- back with an all-SPAL rating. Other outstanding men in the backfield included Howard Nichols, Rich Wilkerson, Bud Linsley, Glen MacGregor, Grant Ben- nion, Jack Curtice and Tom Hurley. Paly had a good line bolstered by the likes of Rich Malloch, Jay Mitchell, Eric Bigler, Garrel Gandrud, Ben Kwong, John Segestrom, Larry Elkington, Don Gray Craig Lehmann, Charles Camp- bell and Chuck Heinrich. VARSITY BASKETBALL Headed by Coach Clem Wiser, this year's Varsity Basketball Team was one of the best Paly has seen in a long time. Varsity hoopsters racked up a 21 won, 8 lost record for the entire season and tied for the SPAL cham- pionship with a 6 won, 2 lost mark. The Vikes swept through their first six games undefeated, with wins over such teams as Galileo and Jefferson of San Francisco before losing two games in the Palo Alto Invitational Tourna- ment where they placed fourth. They also placed fourth in the Mountain View tournament after almost knocking off highly-seeded Camden of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League. After the holiday season, the Vikes went on to win many more games, including the SPAL championship. Paly was then invited to the Peninsula Basketball Tournament, where they placed fourth among a heap of the best high school teams on the peninsula. Clem Wiser was chosen Coach of the Year and John Pastieneks was chosen Player of the Year when SPAL honors came out. Junior Rich Hunt re- ceived an honorable mention award. Other players who helped the team to success were Craig Carpenter, Dave Vaile, Norm Eliasen, Lyn Bennion, Howard Nichols, Mike Garbelt, Ray Haman, Klar Wennerholm, John Afton, Terry Cooley, and managers Fritz Klinke and George Sensabaugh. 92 ACTION! The overall season record was 9 wins and 12 losses, and the league record stood at 2 wins and 6 losses. First stringers Steve Moreno, Jim Craig, Ken Hinckley, Bob Strohecker and Jay Lewis carried most of the playing load with Benny Kwong filling in as sixth man. The record does not show the actual ability of the team, as many of the losses were by one or two points. Next year's pros- pects are fairly good, with Doug Dunn and Kaerry Otterby moving up from the C's and some talented ball players com- ing from the junior high. VARSITY WRESTLING Paly had a very strong and successful Wrestling Team this year. The Norse grapplers tied for first place in the South Peninsula Athletic League championship and also took top honors in the SPAL individual champion- ships held at Cubberley High School. In league matches Coach Wes Fish- ers' matmen tied for first with Cubberley and Menlo Atherton. Five Paly wrestlers won first place in their weight divisions. Dave Ritchie, who was elected Captain of this year’s squad, went undefeated in league matches and took first place in the 120-pound bracket. Marty Collins won his second SPAL championship by winning the 127-pound division. Junichi Kono went undefeated in the 138-pound division and took top SPAL honors. The 145-pound division was won by junior Rocky Hansen. Larry Sherwood was SPAL champion in his division also. Seconds were won by Doug Brown, 154-pound division; Tom Hurley, 133- pound division; and Pete Escherick, I 75-pound division. Bruce Cobbledick placed third, and Dennis Lose and Al Bernard took fourths. Second Row: Coach Forrest Jamieson, Barry Evans, Jim Finch, Ed Lee, Al Park, Seth Hill, Alan Kehler, Hugh Warren, Lee Andry, Chris Burdick ( manager). VARSITY CROSS COUNTRY Through the use of Australian distance running methods and excellent training, Coach Forrest Jamieson has fielded a Cross Country team that rates best in the nation. The team not only won the SPAL and NCS competition but also set a national record for the five-man 2-mile race. In this event each of the five boys ran 2 miles and their combined time was 50:17.7. In Cross Country meet competition, George Linn posted an undefeated season and Mike Lehner and Mike Chilton set world records for their respective age groups. Lehner holds the world record for 2 miles for a 15-year-old with a time of 4:22.4. Others who contributed to the team success include Ron Levy, Jim Edler, John Kiraly, Ric Brady, Barry Avans, Jim Finch, Ed Lee, Al Park, Seth Hill, Alan Keahler, Hugh Warren, Lee Andry, and Manager Chris Burdick. Prospects for next year are again good with seven of the top nine boys returning. 100 Front Row — left to right: Frank Place, Bob Wilson, Dave Ritchie, Steve Rothert, Norm Peterson, Bob Cresap, John Afton. Third Row: Coach Nort Thornton, George Nolte, Tay Leslie, Doug Brown, Jim Mitchell, Mike Von Wolf, Dick Armstrong, Manager John Barnes. VARSITY SWIMMING With only one or two meets behind them at press time, it is impossible to tell how good this year's swimming squad is. This year's team lacks the stars of last year but has the depth that was missing in '58. In the 50 free- style there are Bob Wilson, Doug Brown, Jim Brodie and Tay Leslie. Butter- fly swimmers are Mike VonWolff and Lou Miller. In the 200 freestyle are Bob Cresap, Milton Saier and Steve Rogers. The strongest event is the backstroke with Steve Rothert and Terry Maxwell. Breaststrokers are Dick Jennings and Dick Armstrong. 100 freestylers are Bob Wilson, Jim Mitchell and Lou Miller, and in the individual medley are Mike Von Wolff and Lou Miller. The medley relay swimmers are Rothert, Maxwell, Jennings and Miller. For the freestyle relay there are Wilson, Brodie, Lesley and Mitchell. Another strong spot is the diving, highlighted by varsity all-America candi- date Denis Lose. Lose is backed up by divers Rich Wilkerson and Mel Rumwell. This is Coach Nort Thornton's last year as swimming coach. 102 Second Row: Coach Nort Thornton, Charles Zinser, Steve Mitch- ell, Richard Dingle, Manager John Barnes. B SWIMMING Denis Lose starts one of his intricate high dives C team picture did not turn out. 103 Front Row — left to right: Ken Hawkins (manager), Lee Andry, Malcolm Triton, Bob Cooley, Steve Wheeler, Larry Elkington, Rondy Shearer, Mike Chilton, Ray Askew, John Kiraly, Don Vogt (manager). Second Row: Ron Levy, Jerry Keithly, Klar Wennerholm, Lon Otterby, Alan Park, Bob Ruegg, Coach Forrest Jamieson, Herb Lowinen, Roger Cox, Jon Hart, George Linn, Dick Ashworth, John Rubents. VARSITY TRACK Backed up by a pack of excellent distance runners, this year's varsity track squad shows indications of a fruitful season.
