DEDICATION Mrs, Margaret Webb We, the class of 1958, dedicate this, our yearbook, to Mrs. Margaret S. Webb, whose tireless effort, devotion to the student body, and professional competence made her an outstanding per- son, and one to be remembered. For nearly a decade Mrs. Webb gave to Paly, and Paly was a fortunate school to have had her time, her planning ability, her wonderful ability to listen and solve problems, and much, much more. We all notice her absence constantly, and deeply regret her passing on August 8, 1957. 2

MR. RUPPEL'S NOTE TO STUDENTS: It is both a challenge and a privilege to write the foreword to the 1958 Madrono. Faculty and students join with me in wishing the class of 1958 both success and happiness. Your are living in an air-electronic-atomic age whether you like it or not. Last evening, I saw for the first time a man-made missile circling the earth. This is a forerunner of the future and dramatizes the need to muster our facts and look for answers. Young people growing up today will see the equivalent of centuries of progress telescoped into their' life span. You will have tremendous opportunity as well as responsibility We know that advances in science and technology will be made at an ever in- creasing speed. You must see that we advance on spiritual and ethical fronts if science is to be kept on a reasonable balance with the welfare of mankind. We need competent and informed young people to assume leadership in this rapidly changing world. I fervently hope that Palo Alto High School has given you an awareness of the strength of our democratic heritage and has intensified your desire for knowledge of the humanities and the social sciences as well as science and mathematics. I urge you to seek learning and to educate yourself to the highest level of which you are capable. I wish to express my appreciation to Miss Roberta Miller, Madrono editor and her staff; to Miss Mary Hilton, Commissioner of Publications, and to Mrs. Louise Haskin, Madrono sponsor for their long hours of work in producing the 1958 Madrono. This book is a library of memories and will mean more to you as the years go by. — RAY P. RUPPEL
