Editor Roberta Miller Associate Editor Lynda McKnight Business Manager Jack Schump Artists Ron Burda. cover; Ron Burda, Chris Hoehn, Janet Nicholsen, Jack Schump Photographers Terry Shuchat Jim Ferguson Mrs. Haskin Advisor DEDICATION Mrs, Margaret Webb We, the class of 1958, dedicate this, our yearbook, to Mrs. Margaret S. Webb, whose tireless effort, devotion to the student body, and professional competence made her an outstanding per- son, and one to be remembered. For nearly a decade Mrs. Webb gave to Paly, and Paly was a fortunate school to have had her time, her planning ability, her wonderful ability to listen and solve problems, and much, much more. We all notice her absence constantly, and deeply regret her passing on August 8, 1957. 2 MR. RUPPEL'S NOTE TO STUDENTS: It is both a challenge and a privilege to write the foreword to the 1958 Madrono. Faculty and students join with me in wishing the class of 1958 both success and happiness. Your are living in an air-electronic-atomic age whether you like it or not. Last evening, I saw for the first time a man-made missile circling the earth. This is a forerunner of the future and dramatizes the need to muster our facts and look for answers. Young people growing up today will see the equivalent of centuries of progress telescoped into their' life span. You will have tremendous opportunity as well as responsibility We know that advances in science and technology will be made at an ever in- creasing speed. You must see that we advance on spiritual and ethical fronts if science is to be kept on a reasonable balance with the welfare of mankind. We need competent and informed young people to assume leadership in this rapidly changing world. I fervently hope that Palo Alto High School has given you an awareness of the strength of our democratic heritage and has intensified your desire for knowledge of the humanities and the social sciences as well as science and mathematics. I urge you to seek learning and to educate yourself to the highest level of which you are capable. I wish to express my appreciation to Miss Roberta Miller, Madrono editor and her staff; to Miss Mary Hilton, Commissioner of Publications, and to Mrs. Louise Haskin, Madrono sponsor for their long hours of work in producing the 1958 Madrono. This book is a library of memories and will mean more to you as the years go by. — RAY P. RUPPEL 4 5 Vice Principal, Dr, Mason and Dean of Girls, Mrs. Goodlive. Elliot Smith President Patsy Flint Vice President Kyra Taylor Secretary-Treasurer THE ClASS OF 12 People will little note nor long remember what , . , is said here, but we — the class of '58 — will certainly remember what we accomplished during our three years at Paly. We began our sophomore year 542 strong, a little awed by our sur- roundings. Our sophomore football team came in second in PAL stand- ings with six victories, one loss. The following spring we held our class party, Sophomore Shenanigans; swimming, volleyball, baseball, dinner, and dancing were all available. In our junior year our class was split — half leaving to become the be- ginnings of a new high school, Cubberley. Class spirit is strong, but school spirit even stronger; and so a friendly rivalry did develop. The big event of the year was Carousel, our very successful junior prom. Our class party was in December this time; the evening consisted of an enormous spaghetti feed topped by volleyball and dancing for those who were able, and ended with group singing. In sports our junior boys were part of varsity football, water polo, cross country, wrestling, and swimming teams, all of which became PAL champions. Our senior year — when we assumed leadership at Paly — was an Im- portant time for all of us. We worked hard — both in running the school and completing our last course requirements. Our football team was second in SPAL standings; we had the only team which was able to slow the winning Cougars. The Board of Welfare was created for the purpose of maintaining Paly's good reputation. Town meeting, a new program to enable the students to voice their opinions and discuss school issues, was tentatively organized. As the yearbook goes to press many of our class members have been selected for scholarship programs and several opportunities are still available. Yes, we have accomplished much and gained much In our three years at Paly — and we are better prepared to face the future because of this. Georqe French All-SPAL End Steve Weissbluth All-SPAL 2nd Team Guard In title contention for the third straight year, defending PAL champs Palo Alto High School’s varsity football team came within one point of a share of the 1957 South Peninsula Athletic League crown. The Viltes, working on a 14 game win streak from the past two seasons, won their opener against Menlo-Atherton, 18-0, and then faltered to a fired up Carlmont team to lose their first contest, 18-13, since the opening game of the 1955 season. From there, coach Hugh McWilliams Norsemen recovered with a victory by for- feiture over Willow Glen and a pair of victories over San Jose, 14-0, and San Mateo, 40-14, One game behind undefeated SPAL leader and cross-town rival Cubberley High School, the Vikings needed a victory over the Cougars in their next game to gain a first place tie. With excitement at its highest the Norse went out and outclassed the Cougars, but had to settle for a 20-20 tie after tying up the game on a Don McPhail to Rich Wilkerson pass in the final 80 seconds of play. Not letting up in the least, Paly went on to defeat Lincoln, 21-6, and edge out another exciting victory over Sequoia, 19-13, in the Thanksgiving Day big game at Stanford Stadium. Leader of Paly's offensive unit was sharp-passing co-captain Don McPhail, voted the team's Player of the Year and selected on the all-SPAL first team. John Wildman Pappas, all-SPAL center, was the bullwark of Paly's strong defensive line. Other team standouts were all-SPAL end George French and all-SPAL second team members Steve Weissbluth and Gordon Lockhart along with lineman Bob Bowman, Jon Brandin, Rich Malloch, Jerry Marsh, Joe Mihms, Jay Mitchell, John Reed, Bob Stavn, and Bill Woodman and backs Russ Hubbard, co-captain Mike McClellan, Bob Talbott, and Rich Wilkerson. Gordon Lockhart All-SPAL 2nd Team End with Coach Hugh McWilliams. McPhail picks up yardage on a Beaker Keeper as Steve Weissbluth (60) leads interference. Wilkerson 136) and McClellan (33) drag down a Cubberley ball carrier in the first meeting on the football field of the cross-town rivals. (Left) Lockhart nabs a pass from McPhail for si points against San Jose. (Right) Mc- Clellan prevents the same as he breaks up a long pass late in the Sequoia game. VARSITY WATER POLO Led by Roger Baer, Palo Alto's varsity water poloists closed their suc- cessful season with a six won two lost league record. In practice games the Norse walked through their opponents undefeated. Highlight of the season was the Cal Frosh meet in which Nort Thornton's squad held off the highly touted Bears to an I I-1 I tie. The league title was decided in the final game of the season when powerful Sequoia slipped by Palo Alto in the final seconds of play to grab a 6-5 win and the championship. Two Palo Altan's, Roger Baer and Pete Brown, were named to the all-SPAL first team, while goalie Bob Biorn and guard Fred Michaud re- ceived honorable mention awards. Other competitors acknowledged for their contributions to a fine season were Roland Mays, Mike Von Wolff, Glen Stark, Terry Milligan, Charlie Mitchell, Bob Cresap, and Steve Rothert. Roger Beer All-SPAL Forward Pete Browne All-SPAL Forward Fred Michaud All-SPAL Honorable Mention Guard MK Captain John Northway SPAL, NCS champion Led by Little John Northway and Long George Linn, Paly's 1957 cross country team established itself as the best ever accumulation of distance runners in the history of the school. Aside from their tragic state meet performance, the Vikes literally swept through all competition without even a scare as they took team victories in the SPAL, NC5 III, and NCS championships as well as dual meet victories over San Francisco City Champions Polytechnic and Stanford Freshmen. In the first annual Track and Field News nation wide cross-country meet the Vikes were edged into second place by Morningside High School of Southern California in competition against high school teams from the entire United States and part of Canada. The first all-California state meet spelled tragedy, however, as the Vikes, running without Linn and after a two week absence from any competition, seemed to all collapse at the same time and managed only a meager IOth place. Northway and Georgeous George were undefeated In high school competition up to the state meet, while Horse Hoofed Jack Beahrs, Mike Chilton, Dick Fregulia, Howard McCleod, and Henry George rounded out the varsity seven. Northway, Linn, Beahrs, McCleod. and Fregulia all earned spots on the seven man all-SPAL team, while Chil- ton was second man in the soph-fresh competition. Front Row: G. Linn, H. Mc- Cleod, H. VARSITY BASKETBALL Although Palo Alto finished once again near the bottom of the SPAL basketball standings, the 1958 Vike varsity showed great improvement over recent years and provided strong indications that Paly is due for more success in the near future. The Vikes started out the season at a mediocre pace until mid-December, when they suddenly caught fire and became one of the hottest teams on the mid-Peninsula. Going into the Palo Alto Christmas Tournament as solid underdogs, the Norse surprised everyone by ending up playing Jeffer- son for the tourney championship. Although the Vikes lost in a fairly dose battle, they still claimed second place over such teams as St. Ignatius, Sequoia, Menlo-Atherton, and SPAL champs Lincoln. The Vikes went on to take third place in the Mountain View Christmas Tournament and to win their first three SPAL league contests before slumping into an I I-game losing streak. Coach Clem Wiser employed seniors Neill Parkin, Don McPhail, and Gordon Lockhart, junior John Pastenieks, and sophomore Craig Carpenter as his starting five with senior Bill Munsey filling in as sixth man. Left: Parkin (40) and McPhail fight for rebound in rugged Jef- ferson battle. Above: Parkin drives in for a (ay-in in opening game of Paly Tourney against Carlmont. Sophomore flash Craig Carpenter (30) makes the most out of a time-out during the Willow Glen game. LIGHTWEIGHT BASKETBALL Chalking up a 7-6 won-lost record in league play, coach Ken White's 1958 light- weight cagers made their best showing in recent years as they managed a tie for 4th place in the eight-team SPAL final standings. Led by erratic Dave Vaile, an all-SPAL second team choice, along with leading scorer Mike Garbett and defensive standout Norman Eliason, the L'il Vikes beat Cub- berley and Willow Glen twice, split with Lincoln, third place Carlmont, and second place Sequoia, were beaten by San Jose once, the second game being called on ac- count of a leaky San Jose gym, and lost twice, once by a meager 33-31 score, to league champions Menlo-Atherton, In addition to their league feats, the Norse de- feated NPAL lightweight champions Capuchino, 31-29, to take third place in the M-A Christmas Lightweight Basketball Tournament. Rounding out Coach White’s best ever team were, along with Vaile, Garbett, and Eliason, Dave Takamoto, Klar Winnerholm, and Evan Thomas. Left to Right: Billy Shaddle, Dave Vaile, Evan Thomas, Norm Eliason, Ron Levy, Mike Garbett, Jim Moore, Dave Takamoto. Bottom Row: Reede Terry, Rich Collins, David Ritchie, Tom Hurley, Ed Cryan, Junichi Kono, Tim Towld, Top Row: Wes Fisher (coach), Steve Weissbluth, Bob Benedetti, Arvid North, Lee Anderson, Bruce Cobbledick, Doug Brown, Fred Michaud, Rusty Bennett, Rocky Hansen, Bruce Lindal (manager). WRESTLING Breaking a three year winning record, Vike grapplers this year had to be content with a third place in the SPAL final standings. Under the direction of Coach Wes Fisher, the Paly arm twisters went through a two-defeat season, losing to powerful Menlo-Atherton and Willow Glen squads. Outstanding for the Viking matmen was Marty Collins (I 12), who took a first in the SPAL and a third in the NCS tourney. Others who showed themselves deserving of praise for the season are Eddie Cryan (133), Tom Hurley (138), and Junichi Kono (112). Looking to next year, Coach Fisher expects a strong team, perhaps strong enough to regain their rank as SPAL champs. Fisher will lose only three seniors from this year's team, Cryan, Steve Weissbluth, and Fred Michaud. Front Row: 8. A. Beahrs. B. Lohman. R. Fregulia, J. Nor+hway, M, Chilton, J. Fields, G. Jamieson (head coach). T R A C K VARSITY With wet weather playing havoc with their early season schedule, Paly's tracksters had at press time met only two league opponents. Coach Forrest Jamieson’s Vikes, rated as SPAL title contenders in pre-season predictions, beat Carlmont in their league opener, lost a crucial to Menlo-Atherton, and after three weeks of muddy tracks were still looking for their third league meet. Despite the bad weather, however, the Norse performers did exhibit some good early season marks. George Linn had a 1:58.9 half mile time, fifth best in the nation at the time he posted it, while John Northway boasted a sixth best 1:59.5 along with a sixth best mile time of 4:30.3. Behind Northway and Linn three other distance runners, Mike Lehner, Jack Beahrs, and Dick Fregulia were al- ready under 4:50. In the hurdles Bill Brown was gaining recognition as one of the best hurdlers in the area while Bob Clark assured extra points in both the highs and lows, Pole vaulter Don Beal was consistently clearing 12 feet, looking like a state meet contender, while Michi Kono was pushing I I feet, good enough for second place in most meets. John Pastenieks hit 20 feet in the broad jump, Gordon Lockhart 48'10 in the shot put, both John Brandin and Boyd Smith 115 feet in the discuss, while sophomore Mike Chilton picked up points in anything from a 220 leg in the half mile relay to the 880 yard run. Missing from picture: Mike McClellan, Tom Bridges, Bill Woodman, Rik Simpson Phil McCowan. Under the helm of newcomer coach Jack Llllard, Paly's varsity base- ballers were striving to make the most of the 1’title-favorite role given them in pre-season polls. At press time the Vikes had, because of con- stant rains, played only one league game, a losing effort to Willow Glen, With six games left in the league schedule, however, title race was still considered to be wide open. Once again dominant on the pitcher's mound was lefty Tom Bridges, this season backed by Rich Malloch, Bill Woodman, Ed Hoffacker, Rik Simpson, and Phil McCowan. Behind the plate was Neill Parkin, while Don Gray occupied first base, Dave Vaile second, Bob Talbot third, Don Mc- Phail shortstop, and Glen Stark, Bill Woodman, and Mike McClellan the outer gardens. Leading hitters for the squad appeared to be Rich Malloch Don McPhail, and Bob Talbot, according to early season performances. Left: Rich Malloch: pitcher, outfielder, and leading bats- man. Back Row: Milce Von Wolff, Carl Marling, Tay Lesley, Jim Vincent, Alan Park, Dick Jennings. For the first time in nearly 25 years it appears that the Palo Alto varsity swimming team might have failed to capture its league title. Coach Nort Thornton's squad boasted several top notch indivi- dual standouts but was handicapped by a lack of depth. With the close of the season All-American Pete Browne was expected to break every existing free- style record. He qualified for his second year of All-American with a shattering 23.1 in the 50 free and a 53.1 in the 100 free. He was undefeated in high school competition this year up to press time. Roger Baer, top breast stroker in the SPAL, broke the school mark in the 100 yard butterfly with a swift 1:01.2. He also swam the 100 orthodox breast and contributed laps to the Viking 200 yard free-style relay team. Rich Wilkerson and sophomore Denny Lose were rated as one of the best pair of divers to com- pete for the green and white. The two were constantly fighting it out for number one position. The 200 yard free-style relay team of Browne, Baer, Terry Milligan, and Tay Leslie completed the distance in 1:39.8. The team, playing on Paly's newly re-sur- faced courts ('best on the peninsula1), has suffered only one loss in ex- hibition play and none in SPAL play up to press time. Again, as last year, the team has very good depth as evidenced by the margin of most its victories, and, with almost half the team composed of sophomores, an outstanding future. Standout sophomore Neil Sawyer is number one on the team ladder, followed by outstanding singles play- ers Rfc Brady, Walter Prime, Jon Turner, and Jerry Cox. Bud Fosdick, Pete Langhoff, Doug Dunn, Phil Damask, Ed Mitchell, Steve Neustadter, and Neil Seibert have all helped to give the netters strength in the Front Raw: Bud Fosdiclc, Steve Neustadter, Ed Mit- chell, Neil Siebert, Pete Langhoff. GYMNASTICS With a large turnout and only two seniors on the team, it ap- pears that coach David Leslie's gymnastic team has made itself a permanent fixture after only two years of existence in the Paly sports program. The Vike gymnasts, led by Fred Michaud and Jean Ravicchio, were expected to finish around fourth place in the final stand- ings of the Northern California Gymnastics Association — a league composed of seven teams from the peninsula and east bay area. At press time the Vikes had defeated San Mateo and suffered losses to Mt. Diablo and James Lick. Members of the 1958 Paly gymnastic team are Bill Bennet, Larry Berger, Damon Chalmers, Marty Collins, Bill Fox, Rocky Hansen, Mike Holt, Jim Isaacson, Paul Johnston, Denny Lose, Jim McCracken, Michaud, Rex Morton, Ravicchio, Bill Richmond, Marc Weissbluth, and manager Blake Sonne. Back Row: Paul Loveless, Jim Kawa kama, John King, Jan Prahm. After losing almost an entire golf team to graduation last year, coach Hugh McWilliams came up with a fine crop of sophomore and junior golfers for his 1958 squad and consequently was expected to finish in the first division in SPAL competition. Led by sophomore Jan Prahm and junior Bob Wende- ler, the Vike divotmen had defeated Sequoia and Carlmont and suffered a one-point loss to Lincoln at press time. With no seniors on the squad, the prospects for this seaon as well as seasons to come were exceedingly bright. This year's rifle team has been the most successful in the school's history. The first big match of the year was the State Junion Championships. Cordon Lockhart, Ed Mitchell, Don Engelman, and Steve Montague all took medals, and Montague was named to the State Team, The team was un- defeated in league matches against Menlo-Atherton, Carlmont, San Carlos, and the Menlo Sun Club. Engelman, Lockhart, and Montague were in the running for all-league placing. At the Senior National Match, Lockhart placed third in his class and the team was first in its class.
