Text from Pages 1 - 154 of the 1957 volume:

Mr. Rumpel says... I am honored to have been invited to write the foreword to the 1957 Madrono The faculty and staff members join with me in wishing the class of 1957, Paly's largest graduating class, success and happiness. It is my fervent hope that the young men and women who attend Palo Alto High School always find a sympathetic understanding of their needs, happiness in their work and many rich opportunities for useful learning. It is my prayer that the faculty of this school exert a wholesome influence on the ideals, the conduct and the ambitions of all the youth who enter their classrooms. Every right you have inherited as youth in a free society carries with it a respon- sibility. The problems you will have to solve are not the problems to which my generation has found solutions. You will need understanding, patience and tolerance to test new learning against old experience. May Paly High with its classrooms, shops, laboratories, gymnasia and playing fields remind you of America's con- tinuing indebtedness to its free system of public schools open to all the children of all the people. I wish to express my appreciation and that of the staff to Miss Barbara Woods, Madrono Editor, and her staff; to Miss Barbara Norman, Commissioner of Publica- tions, and to Mr. Paul McCalib, Madrono sponsor for their long hours of work in pro- ducing the 1957 Madrono. It is a storehouse of memories and will become more valuable as years go by. The seniors are joining an illustrious group of graduates. I hope they will always have pride in their school. In a spirit of confidence we who are to return to Paly wish you the best of good fortune. 2 — RAY P. RUPPEL Queridos amigos mios: I little thought when I received my diploma from Palo Alto High School in 1910, that I would be sending a farewell message to the Madrono of 1957, this time as a graduating teacher. I loved Paly then; I love her now. The spirit of wholesomeness, friendship, understanding, and opportunity which existed then are still abundantly present for those who care to enjoy them. The buildings may be different, but they represent only the outer shell. Paly lives on through the years in the character, loyalty and enthusiasm of her students, past and present, and her faculty. These qualities have always been and always will be characteristic of our school. I hope that in the future, when you look back on 1957, that your mind will fill with love and gratifude as you realize what Paly tried to express to you. May hard work and success enter your experience in reason- able amounts, and may you be truly happy. Sincerely, Lina Jacob Guerrero Mrs. Guerrero Dedication The Class of 1957 wishes to dedicate this Madrono to you, Mrs. Guerrero and Mrs. Younkin, whose years of service to Palo Alto Senior High School amount to more than three-quarters of a century. Mrs. Younkin To the class of ’57: I would like to express my appreciation for your co-operation in making many worth-while undertakings successful. During the past three years we have worked together in the classroom, in World Service and have played together on the tennis court. It is my hope that in the process you have learned that happiness is a by-product of service. You have done well in fhe past. Your success and achieve- ments in the future will be even more notable. The best of luck and God bless you all. Mrs. Fay L. Younkin Faculty And if I should live to be The last leaf upon the tree In the spring, Let them smile, as I do now, Where I cling. — Oliver Wendell Holmes f o 5 Superintendent 6 Seared — left to right: Mrs. Hopper. Mr. Finch, end Mr. Venderpool. Standing, left, Mr. Power; right, Mr. Page. Board of Education As Paly's Vice Principals, Dr. Mason and Mrs. Webb work together and assist Mr. Ruppel in governing the students and the faculty. They are also Dean of Boys and Dean of Girls respectively and handle many problems of the students. These two people also work hard with student activities and student govern- ment to improve Paly and keep it running well. Rachel H. Austin Robert G. Bander Frank E. Barr Maynard Brown William A. ELIZABETH PUKaS Counselor Senior Class History Now that we have come to the close of our high school career, it is hard to realize how much we have changed since we first came to Paly. We cannot deny that each of us has changed over the three years; our many-faceted education assures us of that. When we came here in 1954, we had but one thing to help us along through the years; that thing was spirit. Our sophomore year was one of changes at Paly. Our principal, Ray P. Ruppel, was a Sopho- more with us, for it was his first year In charge of the school. The questionable Block P initiation policy was changed and caused a furor; partly as a result of this policy change, we were the last class to receive school-approved initiations. The Class of '57 presented the last Soph-Hop, Beau and Arrow Ball ; it was centered on a Valentine theme. Soph football just missed the championship, but was sensational in scoring, Fifty-seven was on its way to becoming Best Ever . During the junior year, we kept the school running. Any serious senior knew it and often said so. We were the bulk of the sports teams and kept the hustle1 alive. The Junior Prom, Mirage , was one of the most highly successful dances of the year. We then knew we were Best Ever , and our chance came to prove it in our senior year. With the largest Senior Class in the school's history, how could we miss? The spirit in athletics was the most intense Paly had ever seen. Our teams won first places in every fall sport, and nobody can beat that. The Senior Smash was certainly a most spirited and entertaining class party. The Senior Ball was fittingly resplendent for the Class of '57; Grad Night and Senior Week topped every- thing previously held at Paly. We were, truly, Best Ever . Perhaps the Spirit of '57 will not be carried on in all of us, but we can look back on our stay at Paly as being a shining experience. We will never fully realize all that Paly has given us, and Paly High will be to most of us the finest high school we could have attended. The varsity sports program this year has been the most successful in the long history of fine Palo Alto athletics. Paly's supremacy this year was initiated by the fabulous, undefeated football team, and closed by the 24th consecutive championship swimming aggregation, also undefeated. The Cross Country team, the Wrestlers, and the Water Polo team showed the comeback spirit from discouraging defeats to contribute to an over-all record of five varsity Peninsula Athletic League championships out of eight. Many fine individual performers developed from these outstanding teams, and to them this page is dedicated. Still many others not shown here were in- valuable performers who contributed to the skill and depth of the teams. Our teams could not have been champions without them. Always with championship teams the fighting spirit and excitement are aroused. Paly's athletes were true competitors, never cocky, never sure, but always they had the burning desire to win. These teams leave a record of magnificent achievement to all those future athletes who wish to bear the competition, the work, the displeasures, and the failures that lead to accom- plishment. P- A. The (956 Palo Alto High School football team under the direction of Hugh McWilliams and Wes Fisher is not challenged to its claim of Peninsula Athletic League Champions. Not since the time of the Late Hod Ray has a Paly team been sole claimant to the coveted title. Besides this accomplish- ment football writers rated the undefeated Vikings third in Northern California in competition with 2000 other high school ; and some believe that this rating was an understatement. After being tabbed No. I in pre-season polls, every Paly opponent had but one goal: Beat Palo Alto and Doug Castle.” Many teams tried hard and fought valiantly, and some — Willow Glen in particular — nearly succeeded. Willow Glen had the Vikes down 25-6 at one time besides injuring the nearly indestructible Castle. But Castle, and Abe and the whole offensive unit made a terrific comeback, and with 90 seconds remaining quarter-back Don McPhail and end Gene Nelson became the day's heroes. Following the remarkable Willow Glen game many spectators questioned Paly's true greatness. In the Little-Big game on Thanksgiving day the Norsemen proved their high rating correct, butchering arch-rival Sequoia in a dynamic showing. The Sequoia game assured vikes Castle, Abe, Gene Nel- son, Tom Nelson, Les Attebury and Brad Curl positions on the All-SPAL eleven. They left but five spots on this all-star squad for the other five S. P. A. L. teams. Left: Gene Nelson makes an unforgettable catch in an unforgettable game — the Willow Glen game. With a total record of 13 victories and 3 losses, the '56 Paly Water Polo team proved better than the '55 team by capturing a co-championship in the PAL, with Menlo-Atherton also champ. Nort Thornton had an inexperienced crew in the beginning of the season, with only two returning starters. Paly had two games against M. A., losing the first one because of in- experience and a lack of team coordination, but winning the second decisively, ending M. A.'s 27 game win streak. Pete Reed and Don Youngberg made All-PAL with Reed, outstanding at guard position, winning unanimous coaches' approval. Dave Houghton, hero of the second Sequoia game, made second team All-PAL. Other outstanding Paly starters were Fosdick, Baer, Maier, and Corley. Jhe second Sequoia game was one of the most exciting Water Polo games ever played by Paly mermen. A double-overtime tie was ended 6-5 by a desperate wild shot by Houghton just after all-star Reed had fouled out and all hopes looked lost. e r o s s e 0 u n t r V Above: Second fairway, Stanford golf course, at the beginning of the NCS meet. Right: In the same meet Paly sophomore George Lynn approaches the finish line. Winning the PAL and NCS team championships and placing third in Northern California, the great 1956 Cross Country team nevertheless did not approach the greatness of the 55 squad which was acclaimed best in the nation. Paly lost four consecutive dual meets before they began to roll and beat Carlmont for the PAL title. The squad was led by Junior John Northway, who broke Ron Lar- rieu's old record; Bill Whitson; and promising sophomore George Lynn. Coach Jamieson's theories of conditioning once again proved true as he built a championship squad with only two returning varsity performers, Northway and Whitson. Paly lost meets to Lowell of S. F., Milpitas, and the Stanford Frosh. The Northern California championships, with Paly third, featured the best 65 teams in the North State of some 2000 teams. Wrestlers Win PAL Championship Becoming the fourth varsity Peninsula Athletic League champs this year, the Paly wrestlers were talented, although not superior in depth to the '56 squad. In pre-league competition the matmen lost only to Gilroy and San Lorenzo. Paly found tough competition in Menlo-Atherton, and M.A. beat them in a dual meet. M.A., too, was once defeated in the league, and the vikes beat them in the P.A.L. finals. Coach Fisher and Coach Leslie skillfully mentored the champion matmen, building lightweight winners to balance the already skilled heavyweights. Footballers Doug Castle, Phil Holmes, and Bob Kuhta made All-PAL honors, with Brad Curl a run- ner-up. Coach Leslie and Fisher will be hard pressed to find wrestlers to fill the vacancies these talented seniors leave open for next year. Dave Half, Ko Abe, Dick Holden. Bill Mumey, Les Atfebury, Mike Erlin, Ken Reed, John Pastieneks, Sene Nelson, George French, Don McPhail 1957 Varsity Basketball The '57 Paly basketball squad was a group of potentially talented ball players that never found the fight or the team coordination which are signs of fine basketball. Starting the season favorably against poor non-league foes, Coach Clem Wiser's squad soon ran into repeated losses against S.P.A.L. competition. The end result was similar to '56 — the cellar for the vikes with a 1-9 record. Over all they had a 8-15 season record. Surely, changes have to be made if Paly ever wants to win basketball games. John Clark and Joe Killion sometimes scored 20 points a game, showing the potential of great ball players. Ko Abe (better known for his football herocisms), Dick Holden were talented, working guards. Prospects for next year are fair with John (dead-eye) Pastieneks a possible all-SPAL for- ward; George French, Gordon Lochart and Bill Munsey probably making up next year's team. Howard Nichols, Mike McClellan, Jim Pursley, Bob Tallbot, Bill Brown, Neil Perkin, Dick Fregulia, Jerry Berger, Evan Thomas, Sam Leong, Lightweight Basketball Coach Ken White’s '57 lightweight basketball squad ended the league season play with a 9 1 rec- ord and in the league cellar. It was a happy note that they finished, however, as they defeated loop leading Sequoia, who were then tossed into a playoff with Willow Glen, Paly's weakness was shoot- ing, but their asset was ball handling, and in this department they were incomparable. Had the vikes used the stall against other teams that they used against Sequoia, the standings surely would be different. They had illness trouble that handicapped their shooting game. Ken Lambourne and Don Gray were injured early in the season and never returned to action. Neil Parkin was the big gun and num- ber two scorer in final league statistics. Invaluable in ball handling were Mike McClellan, Sam Leong, Michi Kono, Dick Fregulia, and Bill Brown. Neil Parkin up for two Michi Kono comes to the aid of an unidentified Vike. 128 Kneeling. Tennis Undefeated in league competition at press time, the Viking netters have a good chance for a league championship if they can beat Sequoia. Sequoia has beaten them twice so far, as has San Mateo and Mountain View, The netters have posted wins over San Jose and Lincoln. The team boasts depth and singles players of almost equal ability. John Strick- land, Ken Snetsinger, Bob LaLiberte, Walter Prime, Jerry Cox and Bud Fosdick are dll improving, and are capable of beating each other. Coach Hugh McWilliams' 1957 Golf team has for the first time a home course for practice and play — The Palo Alto Municipal Golf Course. Consequently, the team has shown improvement over previous years, and holds a 4 won, 4 loss record at press time. The team is led by Ken Lambourne, who often shoots in the 70’s, and balanced out by Nelson Smith, Roxy Rapp, Gregg Hiura, Mel Rumwell and Bob Windeler. Roger Baer, George French, 24th Consecutive PAL Championship Swim Team To all observers, the Viking swim team is a 'shoo-in for its twenty-fourth consecutive Peninsula Ath- letic League championship; the team stands a good chance to the the N. C. S. title. According to Coach Nort Thornton, this 1957 team is perhaps the best in Paly swimming history. Paly has victories over Burlingame, Willow Gien, Menlo-Atherton, Carlmont, Lincoln, Santa Clara, Bellarmine, Hayward, and Sequoia. They ended their dual meet competition undefeated. Bellarmine was the Vikes closest competitor: score, Bells 46-31. Paly's most successful record breakers are the relay teams. The 200-yd. medley relay team — Roger Corley, Alan Davis, Roger Baer and Pete Brown — broke the N.C.S. record with a 1:53.2 clocking. The 200-yd. freestyle relay team — Browne, Baer, Davis and Pete Reed — came within one second of the national record, ranking fourth in the U. S. with a time of 1:36.5. The team's success is mainly due to its fine group of freestylers, five of whom are All-Americans. Browne cracked the P.A.L. and NeC.S. record for the 50-yd. freestyle with a 23.9. Reed has a sensa- tional 54,7 clocking in the 100-yd. freestyle. Dave Houghton is the top 200-yd, freestyler, and Jamie Hawley and Mike Fowle provide strong depth in the sprints. Pete McElroy, class B swimmer was unde- feated in fourteen races. Davis and Baer, fine Butterfly swimmers, had continually improving times, and were defeated only once this season. Backstrokers Benepe and Corley turned crucial meets in Paly's favor. Rich Wilkerson, sophomore diver, may gain a first in P.A.L. diving, and had a best of 205 pts. Re- turning next year in addition to Wilkerson will be juniors Browne, Baer, Bill Stennis, George French, Jon Brandin, and sophomore Steve Rothert. Taiboy, who was once an outstanding baseballer at Paly himself. At press time the Vikes had lost but one game, but, unfortunately, it was a crucial one. Sequoia beat Talboy's squad 4-0 to end the Vikes’ long pre-league win streak; but the Cherokees in their next game were beaten by M-A (whom Paly once beat) to deadlock the stand- ings. The Vikings are given a fine chance to win the championship, but no one expects it. Much of the Vike talent comes from two fine moundsmen (both southpaws), Dick Holden and Tom Bridges — who are often approached by big-league scouts. Mike McKeon and Bob Kuhta are the big hitters of the squad, and they sport fine averages. Following them in the hitting department, Don McPhail, Rich Malloch and Frank For- mer also provide powerful punch. Coach Talboy’s squad is expected to improve in time, and if he returns next year to coach the many fine Juniors returning, a league championship will be Insured. Bunt? They lack the depth of last year and the talent of a Ron Larrieu. Graduation and the new Cubberly high school have stolen, most of Paly's needed depth. Coach Jamieson and his new assistants — Jim Luttrell and Harry Moore — have built the runners into a solid third place position in the S.P.A.L. To date they had lost meets only to Willow Glen and Menlo-Atherton. They are expect- ed to lose no other meets. Once again Paly is especially strong in the distance races with John Northway, George Lynn, Bill Whitson, and Fred Feldman the key distance men. In the sprints Pete Rothschild is one of the top runners in the P.A.L., boasting 10.0 and 22.4 clock- ings in the 100 and 220 yard dashes. Ron Damico, too, is near tops in the league with a record high jump mark of 6 ft. 3 in. Ken Reed, Dave Hively and John Thomp- son are good contenders in the pole vault. The hurdle events are given depth by Grid men Doug Castle and Jim Millar, with Jim Clark and Bob Clark solid contenders, Doug Finch and John Pastieneks have leaped 22 feet in the broad jump, Les Attebury and Gilbert Delyon have fine marks in the weight events.
