FOREWORD It is my hope that the Class of 1956 may uphold and even surpass the achieve- ments of former graduating classes. It is a source of regret to me that as the school gets larger, my personal contacts with individual students decrease Some of my greatest satisfaction comes from these personal contacts. Ability is developed through education and you have had the benefit of thirteen years of public school training. The door is wide open now. You have the incompar- able chance of youth. All through life we are going through gates that close behind us. You have just passed through another gate. Others will open before you. That is the way of life. You have developed a deep sense of loyalty toward the school and the community. You have left a heritage of friendships and memories. You cooperat- ed in helping to solve the many problems attendant with the large enrollment this year, I am most grateful to you tor your assistance in making 1955-1956 a memorable year in our lives I wish to express my appreciation and that of the faculty to Miss Sandra Carley, Madrono Editor, and her staff; to Miss Susan Minard, Commissioner of Publications, and to Mr. Paul McCalib, Madrono sponsor, for their many hours of work in produc- ing such an outstanding book. The 1956 Madrono is a symbol of Paly spirit and a storehouse of treasured memories. The faculty and staff members join with me in wishing the members of the Class of 1956 both success and happiness. You will join with thousands of Paly graduates to make your mark in the world and add to the prestige of one of the finest high schools in America. Ray P. Ruppel

dedication It is to you, Mrs. Kizer and Mr, Sutherland, that we dedicate the 1956 Madrono for your help and guidance through our years at Paly. Being a teacher can mean many things. One of these is the good feeling that comes from working with people, especially when they are young, alert, and stimulating. An- other is the opportunity to observe a considerable degree of growth taking place in these young people. Being counselors provides an even greater chance to share both the rewards and failures of students at Paly, The Class of 1956 has distinguished itself in many and varied ways. It is the largest class ever to be graduated from Palo Alto High School; it has received more scholar- ships than any other class; and it will have more students going on to college. This class is notable in many other ways. It has worked together as a unit to make all pro- jects move along successfully both within itself and within the student government. It has maintained sound values in sports, in the classroom, and around the campus. To you, Class of 1956, we wish the greatest of success and happiness in the years to come. We know that you will continue the very high standards that have al- ways characterized you as a group. Above all, we know that your greatest successes shall come, regardless of occupation or station, as wholesome human beings. Evelyn Kizer Jack Sutherland
