THE 1956 MADRONO PRESENTS Reflections through the year Published by the Students ol PALO ALTO HIGH SCHOOI Palo Alto, California  «• '.V |M Editor........................... DICK DAVIES Advisor PAUL McCAUB Reflection of the Tower M FOREWORD It is my hope that the Class of 1956 may uphold and even surpass the achieve- ments of former graduating classes. It is a source of regret to me that as the school gets larger, my personal contacts with individual students decrease Some of my greatest satisfaction comes from these personal contacts. Ability is developed through education and you have had the benefit of thirteen years of public school training. The door is wide open now. You have the incompar- able chance of youth. All through life we are going through gates that close behind us. You have just passed through another gate. Others will open before you. That is the way of life. You have developed a deep sense of loyalty toward the school and the community. You have left a heritage of friendships and memories. You cooperat- ed in helping to solve the many problems attendant with the large enrollment this year, I am most grateful to you tor your assistance in making 1955-1956 a memorable year in our lives I wish to express my appreciation and that of the faculty to Miss Sandra Carley, Madrono Editor, and her staff; to Miss Susan Minard, Commissioner of Publications, and to Mr. Paul McCalib, Madrono sponsor, for their many hours of work in produc- ing such an outstanding book. The 1956 Madrono is a symbol of Paly spirit and a storehouse of treasured memories. The faculty and staff members join with me in wishing the members of the Class of 1956 both success and happiness. You will join with thousands of Paly graduates to make your mark in the world and add to the prestige of one of the finest high schools in America. Ray P. Ruppel dedication It is to you, Mrs. Kizer and Mr, Sutherland, that we dedicate the 1956 Madrono for your help and guidance through our years at Paly. Being a teacher can mean many things. One of these is the good feeling that comes from working with people, especially when they are young, alert, and stimulating. An- other is the opportunity to observe a considerable degree of growth taking place in these young people. Being counselors provides an even greater chance to share both the rewards and failures of students at Paly, The Class of 1956 has distinguished itself in many and varied ways. It is the largest class ever to be graduated from Palo Alto High School; it has received more scholar- ships than any other class; and it will have more students going on to college. This class is notable in many other ways. It has worked together as a unit to make all pro- jects move along successfully both within itself and within the student government. It has maintained sound values in sports, in the classroom, and around the campus. To you, Class of 1956, we wish the greatest of success and happiness in the years to come. We know that you will continue the very high standards that have al- ways characterized you as a group. Above all, we know that your greatest successes shall come, regardless of occupation or station, as wholesome human beings. VIC€ PRINCIPALS Dr. Mason and Mrs. Webb, Paly's vice- principals work together to keep the halls of our school ringing with peace. They con- stitute a large part of our administration and help Mr. Rupple, Paly's principal, in governing the students and faculty. These two people work hard with student activi- ties and help to keep our school running smoothly. Mrs. Webb Ralph Mason BOARD OF EDUCATION The Board of Education, under the supervision of Dr. Henry Gunn the superintend- ent, are the head of the Palo Alto school system. These people make the many de- cisions necessary to give thousands of school pupils a good education. They employ the teachers and decide on the many things that are needed to keep the schools thriv- ing. It is partly to these fine people that we owe our thanks for their work in giving us the education that we will need to make our lives wholesome and prosperous. Johnson, S, Jarvis, SENIOR CLASS HISTORY As graduation rapidly approaches and our three years here at Paly draw to a close, it is time for the Class of 1956 to recall some of our varied experiences. As sophomores we entered Paly some four hundred strong and a little awed by our new surroundings. But size proved to be not the only virture of the Class of 56. We proved our athletic ability as Paly won the Soph. P. A. L. Football Championship for the second consecutive year. We ordered our class rings and sponsored the first Soph Hop, centered around a circus theme. As Juniors we excelled in activities, athletics, and scholarship. We participated in the first A. F. S. exchange program, sending four members of our class to live abroad for the summer. We sponsored the Junior Prom, Knight of Magic , which had an unusual medieval theme. As Spring advanced elections drew near and it was time to select our leaders for our all-important Senior year. As Seniors we have had many problems to solve as the leaders of the school. One of our greatest difficulties has been the increased enrollment. We saw the institution 01 the car check on campus and beginning of the P, A. L. Y. Club. The Senior Party, “Blast of ’56 , took place in October and proved to be a lively affair. In May the Senior Class sponsored the Senior Ball, ’’Fantasia , which will long be remembered by all. And now the traditional Senior Week is upon us with the exams, Senior Picnic, Commencement Formal, Commencement Exercises, and Grad Night with Ray Hackett's Band. Upon leaving Paly High the Class of '56 will now continue its education, enter the service, or enter the business world, but we will long remember our years at Paly. s LEE ALLEN Commissioner of Public Wel- fare, Track, Jr, Class Pres , A, F, S. Her charming personality and friendliness endeared her to stu- dents and associates alike. Ray P. Ruppel Principal To watch a great artist create a thing of beauty is a rare privilege. We at Palo Alto High School have enjoyed an even greater experience — that of watching a great artist release students to create some of the best high school art work I have had the privilege of seeing. Mabel Farmer, teacher-artist, will live on in the hearts of all of us. This move comes after many years in the cramped late Victorian quarters in the old Channing school near downtown Palo Alto. Students and faculty of Paly welcome their new neighbors. Ta Iraki—Tackle Although Palo Alto's varsity football machine failed to live up to pre-season ex- pectations, the Vikings finished second — one and one half games behind league leader Lincoln in the final PAL standings. Peninsula sports writers had tabbed Paly as the team to beat at the beginning of the campaign. But a one point opening game loss to eventual champion Lincoln, plus a tie with Willow Glen, thwarted Palo Alto's quest for its first PAL crown since 1951. Senior halfback Gene Bettencourt was the sole Norse player selected on the All-PAL team. Bettencourt was the only repeater from the '54 honor eleven. Doug Castle was named to the All-PAL second team backfield, while end’Gary Schell, tackles Dick Takaki and Bob Thompson, guards Brad Curl and Al Parodi, and de- fensive halfback Rod Anderson were accorded honorable mention. As a team, Palo Alto won honors also. The Vikes were rated eighth in Northern California, according to a high school index. Coach McWilliams' gridders ranked as one of the top defensive aggregations in the PAL, as they allowed opponents a total of only 76 points in eight games. Four contests were decided by one point margins. Lincoln eked out a 14-13 victory to hand Paly its only setback of the campaign. The Norse squeezed by San Mateo 13-12, South San Francisco 13-12, and Sequoia 7-6. Mike Mace's accurate toe provided the winning margin in three of these encounters. Willow Glen tied the Vikes 7-7. The locals defeated Burlingame 20-7, San Jose 46-13, but had to rally in the last quarter to edge Menlo-Atherton 13-6. D. Castle Halfback R. The Lil' Vikes were nipped 21-20 by Jefferson in an early season contest which eventually decided the PAL title. Following this setback the Little Norse coasted to six straight victories. Paly accumulated 21 1 points, tops in the league, while the defense allowed only 79 points. Offensive threats were quarterbacks Ted Tollner and Don McPhail, halfbacks Dave Kifbourne, Mike McClellan, and George French, and fullback Frank Mitchell. Ends Byron Tani and Gordy Lockhart were on the receiving end of many Paly aerials. C D BASKETBALL Paly’s lightweight basketball squads didn't fare very well in their fall campaign as the C's racked up a four win, nine loss overall mark and a two win, eight loss record in PAL play. The D’s gained but one victory in 13 en- counters, ten being league games. However, Coach Ken White produced several candidates for future varsity and lightweight teams. One- twenty cagers Neil Parkin, Jake Ahrens, Jim Pursley, and Russ Hubbard showed good potential while Roy Sira and Don Scott were the D s standouts. Left to Right: D. Duffy, 5. Montague, M. WRESTLING The PAL tournament team title, a first place tie in dual meet com- petition, and five league and two individual championships were the laurels garnered by Wes Fisher's '55-56 wrestling team. Coach Fisher's grapplers again annexed the PAL team crown. The matmen also took the top niche in last year's tourney. San Jose was the only squad to edge Paly in dual meet competition this season. The Vike grapplers placed second in the Northern California Championships. Doug Castle and Rod Anderson captured first place honors in the 175 and 146 pound divisions respectively. Hatsuo Kanazawa, Phil Holmes, Bob Burge, Anderson and Castle comprised Paly's quintet of league winners. Kanazawa gained his third straight title. Castle’s victory was his second successive PAL championhip. For the second straight year Paly's varsity basketball squad claimed the dubious distinction of finish- ing in the league cellar. Coach CLtM User's crew placed last in the final standings with a 2-8 mark. The Vike cagers compiled a 4-15 overall record. The Norse drew a blank in the opening games of the campaign as Mission, Balboa, Burlingame, the Alumni, and Fremont registered triumphs. Following the Christmas vacation the Vikings racked up their initial victory by trimming Campbell 56-37. Senior forward Noel Barnes sparked the winning effort. Paly bowed to Menlo-Atherton and San Jose in the early games of the SPAL slate. Denote Brewick's field goal in the final 50 seconds provided the winning margin for Paly's first league win, a 38-36 squeaker over Willow Glen. Eventual loop champion, Lincoln, had to stage a torrid second half rally to turn back the Vikes 56-33. Coach Wiser's squad again had possible victory clutched from their grasp as Sequoia put on a 25 point spree in the final period to send the tilt into overtime. The Sequoians finally prevailed by a 50-48 margin, Fremont, Menlo-Atherton, San Jose, and Willow Glen administered defeats. The Norse rebound- ed, however, by whipping John O'Connell of San Francisco 47-40. Lincoln and Mountain View re- corded triumphs as the season waned. In final SPAL competition, Paly pulled a major upset by edg- ing Sequoia 43-41. Barnes and Schell received honorable mention honors on the ALL-SPAL basketball team. Barnes led Palo Alto’s scoring with a total of 82 points in 10 league games. Following him were Schell, hustling guard Jeff Rowan, and Brewick. Other players who saw action were John Clark, Jerry Collins, highly regarded sophomores Bill Munsey and George French, Ken Reed, Gene Nelson, Les Attebury, Gordon Lockhart, Mike Erlin, and Bobby Williams. In SPAL play, the Vikings ended in a fourth place tie with Lincoln holding a 3-7 record. Highlights of the season were Paly's victories over Burlingame, Fre- mont, Willow Glen, San Jose, John O'Conell, and Lincoln. Ko Abe was the only Viking with the distinct honor of being named to the first all-SPAL honor team. Dick Holden was named to the honorable mention team. Also invaluable to the light- weights cause were Dave Hall, Benny Brown, Byron Tani, Ron Helges- son, Mike McClellan, and Kenny Hurst. First' Row: 6. Youngberg, B, Bates, S. Kennedy, D, SteiVse, D. CROSS COUNTRY John Northway Following the Northern California Cross Country Championships, there seemed no doubt as to the validity of Coach Forrest Jamieson's state- ment that his squad was the best in the nation. The harriers proved with- out a doubt that they deserved the title of number one in the nation, as Paly was not even closely pressed in winning ten straight meets against the best competition the state had to offer. The Northern California title was easily captured as the Vikes out- distanced Lowell and Washington. Ron Larrieu garnered individual honors as he covered the 1.95 mile course in 10:12. Carlmont, Paly's nearest rival and defending PAL champ, was defeated by the Norse in the PAL Championships. Larrieu suffered from a cold in the meet and placed fifth. His 16-meet win-streak was broken. Sophomore John Northway took first in the PAL Frosh-Sophomore race. The Vikes added to their laurels when they finished first in the NCS Section II Group IV meet and the NCS Finals. Larrieu beat his old rival, Tom Jent of Carlmont, by 15 yards. In regular season meets, the harriers captured wins in four meets, as well as a victory over the Stanford Junior Varsity. Leading Palo Alto runners were Larrieu, John Morrison, Tom Cathcart, Don Brown, Bill Whitson, Steve Johnson, and Northway. Bill Whitson Don Brown Ron Larrieu First Row: Coach Riddle, F. Tao, D.
