Words of appreciation, and thoughts of encouragement come to my mind For me, the commencement season came too soon. Although it is a happy time of year, I have lingering regrets because I was unable to become better acquainted with each one of you. I am sure that if I were able to have spent more time with each member of the class of 1955, my year would have been even richer. I have many pleasant memories of the past school year. Prominent among them are the cheerful greetings from students as I met them about the campus. I shared your successes and failure in acti- vities and in classrooms. I am much impressed with the spirit and friendliness of Paly students. I am grateful to the students and staff for the cooperation given to me in making this year a memorable one in our lives. i am most appreciative t Miss Marilyn Jones, Madrono Editor and her staff; to Miss Donna Arnold, Commissioner of Publications and to Mr, H, Sanford Gum, Jr. and Mr. Billy Davis, Madrono spon- sors; for their work in producing the 1955 Madrono. Only they realize how much careful planning and hard work goes into the production of a high quality yearbook. The 1955 Madrono is a fitting monument to the efforts of hundreds of students and faculty'members. It will serve as a mirror to bring back memories of the many friends we made and the fine times we had in 1954-1955. It will become more valuable as the years go by. Faculty and students alike join me in wishing for the class of 1955, opportunities unlimited. Your class has unusual capacities for success and service to mankind. Brilliant careers lie ahead for many of you. But the best I can wish for you is a happy life. All who joy would win, must shart it. Happiness was born a twin. 4 RAY P. COUNSELORS1 FAREWELL To the Class of 55: As you now go on to new adventure, work, education and all the things that go to make a full life, we want to send with you our very best wish for success and happiness. Working with you for these past three years has been a satisfying and rewarding experience. We have seen you grow from restless, unpredictable sophomores to the mature young adults you now are. During this time many things have transpired that have made us hold you in high regard both as a class and as individuals. And so it is with mixed feelings that we see the end of our associafion with you — regret that we must say farewell, gladness because we know you are ready to start a new and different chapter in your life. We hope that you will always hold a warm spot, in your heart for Paly, for you can be sure that Paly will always hold such a feeling for you, — Bill Hutchinson and Ruth Collins 10 SENIORS i Towru Ikeda President SENIOR COUNCIL — Front Row: J. Alf Brandin Vice-President Lee Houk Secretary Mr. Bill Hutchinson and Miss Ruth Collins, Counselors SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Not to be forgotten the Class of 1955 leaves Palo Alto High School It seems only yesterday when we, as sophomores, walked down the halls of Paly looking up to the seniors. After a while we began to feel at home and things began to roll We won the Sophomore P, A. L. Championship. Our girls joined the social dub of their choice and began to get acquainted with the upperclassmen. The boys of our class helped to strengthen the sports department of that year. With the help of the sophomore girls in the R. I, F. social club, the first Luau took place. Then came our Junior year with an unforgetable Junior Prom, Night in Venice , under the supervision of Jon Huntsman, Junior Class President. We introduced green and white rooters caps to Paly in our Junior year and wore them to the Tournament of Champions, in which some of our boys participated. At the Publications Carnival we had a marriage booth which helped to increase our treasury and before we realized it, it was time to elect Student Leaders for our all important Senior year. Some of the many changes which were presented to our Senior class were: double noon hours, an addition to the administration — Mr. Ray Ruppel, and the beginning of a more efficient student government. The Bermuda fad was going strong and was quite popular with the senior boys at the Jinx of '55, First Nighter . Our drama department completed a successful year with three student directed one-act plays; the Spring Play. The Torchbearers ; and the first operetta in the history of Paly, Sing Out Sweet Land . Under the direction of our Senior Class President, Towru Ikeda, the Senior Ball was highly entertaining. To conclude three years packed with work and fun under the roof of Paly High we have: final exams, baccalaureate services, Senior Week, and Commencement. We leave to set new and more important records in college, in occupations, and 12 some in the service of our country. , TALO ALTO SOWGGL LI HAKV ■SENIORS CHIYONO ABE Home Ec, Club, Block P Pres., Pop Club, Brunch Seller. Ronald—G L Borrago—G VARSITY FOOTBALL Coach Hugh McWilliam's '54 Varsity Vikings put together their best season's effort since 1952 as they finished in a tie for second in the PAL with a 6-2 record and placed two players on the mythical All-PAL squad. The Viking eleven opened the season on a sour note, losing to San Mateo in a night practice tilt, 25-13. The Vikes then proceeded to win their first four league games, beating Willow Glen 20-14, San Jose 14-6, Jefferson 17-14, and Carlmont 34-7. Neighboring Menlo-Atherton upset the Vike's applecart by handin g Paly a 27-21 loss. A Paly fumble late in the fourth quarter set up M-A s winning touchdown and cost the Vikes a share of the league crown. After losing to M-A, the locals traveled to San Bruno and walloped Capuchino 27-7, only to lose the following week to Lincoln, 38-7, which actually eliminated the Vikes from the running. The Big Game with Sequoia ended the season with the Vikings piling up a record breaking score of 46-7. Despite the 46 points, the Vikes got off to a slow start and were only able fo hold a 13-7 half-time advantage. The two Vikings who landed berths on the All-PAL team were junior half-back Gene Bettencourt, and senior end Leon Wentz. The speedy Bet- tencourt won the PAL rushing title with 593 yards, one more than team- mate John Tynan. Went led the league in pass receiving with 26 catches for 368 yards. Other Palyites receiving mention were tackle Dick Takaki, who made second string, Tynan, who was given a berth on the All-SPAL second team and middle guard Mike O'Hare, who was awarded honorable mention. Other invaluables in the Viking cause were Gary Naumart, Pete Bonnett, Bob Bell, Chuck DePew, Don Bishop, Chris Ey, George Nuckton, John Ronalds, Dick Robinson, Dick Callahan, Rod Anderson and Louis Borrego. In taking the PAL crown the Vikes twice defeated Carlmont, Menlo- Atherton, and Sequoia. Coach Nort Thornton's crew also sank James Lick and Santa Clara High and San Jose frosh inxpractice matches, but lost their only two of the season to frosh teams of Stanford and California. Captain and high scorer Bill Harper spearheaded the Viking attack. Thornton's first string consisted of Kirby Kittoe, Harper, and Steve Jarvis at forwards, Ron and Don Tuttle, Bob De Voto, and Bob Kenyon at guards, and goalie John Fairborn. Jim Matthews supplied good reserve strength. All first stringers but Jarvis and Kenyon are graduating this year. Front Row: B. Kenyon, B. De Voto, K. Kittoe, B. Harper, J. Fairborn, R, Tuttle, S. Herron, Coach Forrest Jamieson calls his '54 Cross Country team one of the greatest Paly has ever had and one of the best in the country. Paly's harriers came within four points of taking the North Coast Section title, finishing second behind Carlmont, regarded as the top cross country team in the nation. The Vikes also lost the PAL title to Carlmont by a score of 29-35 and in league contest the Vikes and Highlanders fought to a stand off, 28-28. Junior Ron Larrieu was Jamieson's big gun as he swept to victories in all his races including the NCS individual championship. Other valuable Vikes were Tom Cathcart, Don Brown, John Morrison, Bill Richardson, Steve Storey, Steve Johnson, Bill Whitson, and Ed Kranifelder. Although the Li'l Vikes lost the Championship by one-half game to San Mateo, who handed the Vikes their only loss, 27-0, they piled up a total of 278 points in seven games, climaxed by a record breaking 86 to 0 victory over South San Francisco. The Vikes' stable detense allowed only 45 points to be scored against them all season, averaging a little more than one touchdowna game. • C $D Boubk tibaM • Paly's C and D cagers had a rather unsuccessful season as the C's ended SPAL play with a 2-8 record and the D' failed to see victory. Playing a double round robin schedule, the C's lost every game except for San Jose, whom they beat twice. This statement was made by Coach Wes Fisher at the close of this year's season. Wes should be proud, for his grapplers placed third in the PAL standings, won the PAL tournament, beat San Jose and Sequoia for the first time in the school's history, and sent five wrestlers to the State Championships at Tulare. In regular league play, the Vikes placed In a third place tie with M-A, behind champ San Jose and runner-up Sequoia. Paly downed San Jose 25-19 and Sequoia 21-19. in the year's greatest upsets. Five matmen represented Paly in the PAL tourney and State Championships. Hatsuo Kanazawa, Doug Castle, and Al Perkins won first, while Rod Andersen and Steve Roberts were runner-ups in their divi- sions as the Vikes won the PAL Tournament by outpinning San Jose 60-52. Palo Alto High's varsity cagers compiled their worst league record in eleven years last winter as they tied for last place with Sequoia, holding a meager 3-7 record. Although the var- sity Vikes had such a poor league record they managed to gain a 5-2 practice game mark. The varsity started league play on a sour note as they lost their first four games, but managed to save face by edging Sequoia, 43-42 to end the first round of play with a 1-4 record. After downing rival Sequoia, the Vakes staged the upset of the year by beating previously undefeated Lincoln, 49-48 as Leon Went sank a free throw after the final buzzer had sounded. MenJo-Atherton ended Paly's two game win streak by gaining a 66-64 win in the M-A gym. After the M-A tilt the Vikes beat San Jose but were clobbered by Willow Glen, 65-49. In the season finale, Sequoia handed Coach George Hurley's crew a sound 74-47 thumping. Only bright spots for Paly this year were guard, Yosh Kumagai and forward Jon Huntsman. Kumagai, the Vikes lead- ing scorer, was named to the first All-SPAL team and Hunts- man received honorable mention, Leon Wentz, Don Bishop, and Bucky Armsrong rounded out the first string. Players who also plenty of action were Vance Isreal, Ken Green, Jim Nor- man, Gary Nauman and junior, John Morrison. Morrison, coupled with letterman Denn Brewick and Jeff Rowan com- prises the bulk of next year's varsity. Chuck De Pew, Bob Wil- liams, John Clark, and Les At+ebury will also return next year. Youngberg, After copping the '54-'55 PAL race, Coach Hanlt Hilburn finished the SPAL race with a second place — tied with Sequoia and a 4-6 record. This year's race started as a wide open one and ended in a tight dual between Paly, Sequoia, and Menlo-Atherton. The Li'l Vikes got off to a fast start in league play and after four games they lead the league with a 3-1 slate. In a practice game with Fre- mont, Captain Bill Sturgeon was injured and the lightweights lost their following game to Sequoia, 40-26, which dropped them into a four way tie for fourth place. Hilburn's crew then lost three straight, virtually eliminating them from the race. The lightweights came back to cop their last two games, but it was not enough to take the title. Sturgeon, Noel Barnes, and Ko Abe were Hilburn's sparkplugs. Sturgeon and Barnes made the second all-SPAL team and Abe was given honorable mention. Grant Everett and Dave Heintz rounded out the first string while Ben Harrell, Ted Johnstone, Tom Helgesson, and Sammy Leong saw plenty of action. 97 omdL U-em ruA Kneeling: K. Lambourne, G. Hlura, R. The divotmen of Coach Rolland Bartholomew were dubbed twice by Bellarmine and once by Burlingame, all by lopsided scores. Juniors Gary McAuliffe, Holden Brink, and Grant Everett have carded lowest individual scores. Prospects for ne t season appear promising; highly regarded sophomores include Ken Lambourne, Roxy Rapp, and Gregory Hiura. TENNIS Led by undefeated Vance Israel, Paly's tennis team had posted a 7-3 win-loss record at press time. However, the netters have registered but one PAL match triumph, a 6- victory over San Jose while sustaining defeats by Burlingame, San Mateo, and Carlmont. Coach Paul Engelcke's aggregation has beaten Sequoia, Campbell, Mountain View, and San Jose plus conquering Bellarmine twice. Israel, Jack Thomas, Andy Wilson, Jim Norman, George Creamer, How- ard Young, and Bob Youngberg have been the squad's big guns. vJ'ULck' Front Row: D. Brown, B. Whitson, K, Tompkins, M. The Vike thin- clads have captured five straight wins and lead the SPAL. Defeats were administered to Jefferson, Menlo-Atherton, Willow Glen, Lincoln, and San Jose by Coach Forrest Jamieson’s athletes. The diversified talents of the tracksters have been a contributing factor in Paly's successful season, Ron Larrieu, Pan! Toft, Ed Kransfelder, and Tom Cathcart have all captured winning laurels in one or more events. Larrieu has carved a niche for himself in Paly track history. The perpetual running machine ran the fastest recorded half mile in Northern California this year, 1:59.6, against Willow Glen. He was beaten by three inches in the Sequoia Invitational Meet mile race by Ray Hale of Modesto High School, who placed second in last year's state meet. Toft, high and low hurdles; Kransfelder, 220; and Cathcart. 220, 440, 880, and mile became familiar names when first place winners were announced. Other Vike standouts have been sprinter Lee AIbn; polevaulters Doug Balcomb and Wally North; high jumper Pete Sanford; discus thrower Les Atteberry; distance runner Bill Whitson; and the 880 re- lay team composed of Pete Bonnet, Allen, Kransfelder, and Larrieu, Don Bishop took his share in the hurdles also. 99 LIGHTWEIGHTS — Front Row: R. Coach Jamieson's lightweight trackmen will undoubtedly produce some potent material for next year's varsity. Although the B squad has failed to garner a victory at the time the Madrono went to press, several of its members have turned in creditable per- formances. Bob Gallup has been a consistent winner in the hurdle races; Steve Storey is a note- worthy runner and jumper, Terry Bradley has been a point winner in the 330; and weight- man Brad Curl and Richard Simpson have proved that practice makes perfect. The class C aggregation has posted a 4-1 record. Hatsuo Kanazawa has been the C's workhorse, competing in the low hurdles, shot put, and broad jump. He was a triple winner In three meets, Pete Rothschild is a capable dashman. Richard Wedge has been a standout in the high jump and 330. The 440 relay team with Roy Saito, Kanazawa, Rothschild, and Wedge has alto fared well. 100 Ed Kransfelder Pete Bonnet Swvmmuno Alf Brandin, distance first man; Pete Reed and Jamie Hawley, sprints; Hugh Hollingsworth, diving and sprints. Medley Relay Champs — Don Tuttle, baelcstrolee; Kirby Kittoe. breaststroke; George Nuckton, freestyle. Another P.A.L swimming championship, the 22nd in a row, looms as a certainty for Coach Nort Thornton's charges. Winner of seven consecutive meets, Paly disposed of Santa Clara, 42-33, who had been rated as the Vike's toughest opposition of the season. The varsity has taken the measure of George Washington, Burlingame, Menlo- Atherton, St. Ignatius, Jefferson, and San Mateo in one-sided victories. Coach Thorn- ton in his ninth season at the swimming squad's head, can point to an unparalleled 123 win and 3 loss record in his 9f years coaching tenure at Paly. Leading the way for the local mermen have been Kirby Kittoe, George Nickton, Don Tuttle, Alf Brandin, and Bob Haywood. Unbeaten Kittoe tied Winston Black's school record and bettered the PAL and NCS marks as he swam the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:05.1 in the St. Ignatius debacle. The 150 yard medley relay team of Kittoe, Tuttle, and Nuckton have churned the water in f:25.4, the fastest recorded time in Northern California. Nuckton and Bran- din have each tasted defeat twice, while Bob Haywood has steadily improved. First Row: B. Haywood, H. HllJngs- worth, K. Kittoe, A. Brandin, G. Nuckton, J. Goodwin. But the C's have been able to garner but two victories while losing four meets. The B's have been paced by consistent winner Crane Charters. His 100 yard freestyle best of 1:00.3 bears mention. Al Davis and Dave Mote are consistent Indivi- dual Medley performers. Harold Reeves has fallen off the board with great success. The four man C team has made a good showing. The C team will do better than in past years. Dav® Mot«, Allen Davis, Crane Charters and Chuck Maxson in one of Nort's practice sessions. VARSITY BASEBALL In early season play, a tie for first place in the SPAL is held by the Viking baseballers, at press time. The Norsemen of Coach Hugh McWilliams sport an unblem- ished League slate of three wins in as many starts, and a 4-2 season mark. A two- hitter tossed by veteran portside hurler, Stacey Henell, sent Paly off to a flying start in PAL competition as the Vikes edged Menlo-Atherton, 4-2 in the season opener. Paly pulled, a last ditch stand against Willow Glen to prevail over the Rams. Non-league contests saw the local nine beating Mountain View 4-2 but succumbing 14-12 to Fremont and being scalped by the Stanford Frosh, 9-3. INFIELDERS AND OUTFIELDERS — Kneeling; D. Rum mingnr. D. Leading hitters in league play are Bucky Armstrong and Dick Rumminger each of whom is batting a torrid .500. Gary Madrtgan and Noel Barnes are both slugging the horsehide at a .429 clip. The aforementioned Henell plus Eddie Armstrong form Paly's chief pitching strength. Players from last season's campaign who are showing well are infielders Bucky Armstrong and Rumminger and outfielders Mickey Scofield and Jim Campbell. Returning to next year's squad will be infielders Denny Brewick and Barnes, catchers Jeff Bertelsen and Madrigan, plus southpaw mound star Armstrong. With a nucleus of players from the local junior high schools, the Paly sophs field a 2-2 league record and a 2-3 overall mark at press time. In the win column for Coach Al Mercer's team are triumphs over Burlin- game, San Jose, and JefFerson. Setbacks were ad- minstered by Menlo-Atherton, Mountain View and Jefferson, Prospects for next season's varsity may be found in pitchers Dick Holden and J. D. Athletic Director and Varsity Basketball Coach George Hurley instilled the old hustle, but failed to win many games with his teams. Coach Hugh McWilliams, head varsity football mentor, guided his team into a tie for second place in PAL stand- ings. He also coached a successful baseball squad in the spring. Wes Fisher, assistant football, track end head wrestl- ing coach, guided his grapplers to Paly's first PAL crown. Nort Thornton coached his water polo team to the PAL title, and it looks as if his mermen will capture the swimming title for the 20th straight time. Nort boasts a lifetime swimming record at Paly of 125 wins against only 3 Josses. Coach AI Mercer of Soph football and baseball.
