The long dark halls, Mrs. Duncan's famous calls, Mr. Linder's nice long stride, Mr. Mason's office, always occupied, The coaches, the teachers, and all the rest β Make Paly better than the best. These are some names with memories bound; No better guidance could ever be found. In '52 we were just little wheels, Filling the halls with sophomoric squeals. We picked out our rings for fifty-four And cheered our teams with a mighty roar. Till the Clouds Roll By was our Junior Prom, And soon enough did our big year dawn. We were outstanding in many things, From Gay Paree to our basketball kings. The senior party, Remember Me, Will long remain in our memory. The Senior Ball, commencement, grad night β and by and by Only memories are left of our years in Paly High. Lead In School Government . . ALDEN, ARDETH Jr. Red Cross 3 Keys Social Com. IMPROVEMENTS BIG AND MANY FOR VARSITY GRIDDERS Coach Hugh McWilliams, fresh from Stockton to succeed Bruce Goshorn at the Viking football helm, did wonders with Paly's '53 squad. The Norse wound up with an overall record of 5 wins, 3 losses, and a tie β a big difference from the winless slate of the preceding year. In their opener against Burlingame they showed tremendous potential, most of which came out later in the season but some of which was not evident later in some games. The Vikes looked good in edg- ing Willow Glen 14-13, but then fell to Capuchino and their chances of a PAL championship were lost. As It was significant victories over new rival Menlo-Atherton and Sequoia in the Big Game gave Palo Alto fourth place in the eleven-school PAL standings. Del Boccignone, who was the only Viking to get PAL mention β second team β was a cog that couldn't be missing if Paly was to win, and despite a serious injury he finished the season in fine style. Booming Don Fletcher in the fullback slot and Glade Williams at halfback along with Junior John Ty- nan and Guy Nauman provided the victory punch for the local cause. Others invaluable were Harlow Rothert, Lynn Leigh, Bob Hollars, John Shea, Don Peterson, Jerry Ligon, Don Hampton, Jim Rowe, Rink Babka, Pat Patterson, Dick Robinson, Towru Ikeda, Don Bishop, George Nuckton, Leon Wenti and Morris Belanger. ON TOP AGAIN β Paced by The brilliant efforts of speed-equipped halfback Gene Bettencourt, new Coach Alvin Mercer's soph gridders hurdled five opponents and tied two in holding the Peninsula Athletic League crown successfully for the second consecutive year. After beating Capuchino, 32-14, and Burlingame, 20-13, the Vikes were held to a 13-13 deadlock by Menlo-Atherton, but 20-7 triumphs over San Mateo and Jefferson, coupled with a 12-0 trampling of Sequoia resulted in undisputed possession of the PAL crown. A 6-6 tie with Carlmont near the season's finish failed to hinder Paly's championship efforts. Bettencourt, the converted quarterback with a sparkling total of 13 touchdowns β some on runs of 80 and 90 yards β was the Vikings' victory ticket last year, not to mention passing, punting, and de- fensive chores besides. Soph quarterback Rod Anderson, sensational defensively throughout the season as well as directing the T formation attack, should provide a great boost to the local varsity next fall. Fullbacks Mike O'Hare and Jim Moore will also be strong candidates on the varsity next year, along with halfbacks Dave Keeney, Hatsuo Kanazawa, and Ron Hovey. Gary Schell, Pete Sanford, and Bob Creighton are excellent prospects from the end positions. but it Was THERE A MINUTE AGO β Vike Gary Schell Rod Anderson's favorite aerial target, gets set to gather in a pass but Menlo-Athertonβs Wade Hampton suc- cessfully bats it d own. The game, a 13-13 tie with M-A, was one of the finest soph contests seen on local Hod Ray Field. CHAMPION BACKFIELD β Above are the four punch-pro- viders of the soph eleven that powered its way to the PAL title: Half Dave Keeney, Fullback Mike O'Hare (with ball), QB Rod Anderson, and Half Gene Bettencourt. Up to help the varsity next year, this quartet may soon be the terror of the PAL. Wally Wrathall, Bob Foy, Bill Clark, Bob Erickson, John Brown, Dick Arjo, Bob Samuelson, Enrico Biondi. WIDE RECOGNITION β Paly's cross country team, made up mostly of sophomores that should produce great results in the near future, overcame a slow start to become the top hill and dale squad in Northern California. Coach Forrest Jamieson's newly formed West Bay Jamborees on the Stanford Gold Course brought to light a new sport that both PAL and NCS schools are becoming more and more acquainted with. Roger Stephens was No. I Viking last fall, but he'll leave this year. Next year's squad should be even better than the preceding one, though, since Ron Larrieu, Steve Johnson, Tom Cathcart, and Frank Bragg will be running with a good year's experience under their belts. WRESTLING Front Row: Haijuo Kanazawa, Roy Saito, Bill Hendrix, Frank McCann, Rod Anderson. Top Row: Clarence Hamm, Joe Fabnzio, Lynn Leigh, Mike Fries, Steve Roberts, Ron Scholz, John Arnold, Al Perkins, Junius Brown, Coach Wes Fisher. GETTING BETTER AND BETTER β Improving by leaps and bounds this year, the Paly wrestlers finish- ed with an even 4-4 record in league play, good enough for third place in the five-team PAL. San Jose and Sequoia proved too much for the Vikes, but Menlo-Atherton and Carlmont were on the losing end of encounters with the locals. Despite only third place, however, four Vikings β Hatsuo Kanazawa, Rod Anderson, Steve Roberts and Al Perkins β were division winners in the PALand NCS finals. All will be back next year, too, to provide Coach Wes Fisher with an even stronger outfit in his fifth year at the wrestling helm. Other top matmen in the 1954 campaign were Lynn Leigh, Roy Saito, Bill Hendrix, Joe Fabrizio, and Ron Scholz. 120's BASKETBALL Top Row: Junius Brown, Bill Hendrix, Bob Groff, Doug Balcomb. Jackie Thomas. Front Row: Fred Morgan, Roy Salto, Dave Heintz, Jeff Rowan, Ben Harrell. Ronald Helgesson. Having merged a meager IIO's squad with a stronger I20's team last fall, Coach George Hurley nevertheless had troubles with the single outfit that was produced. But despite a poor final record of one win and nine losses, the local lighties produced some good material for future varsities. Jeff Rowan, Dave Heintz, and Jack Thomas β along with Ben Harrell and Roy Saito who comprised the first string β got good experience and are expected to make the most of it next year. WATER POLO Front Row: Morris Bol, Dan Tuttle, Todd Morrison, Cecil Cutting, Kirby Kittoe, Milce Thornton, Bill Harper. Top Row: Manager Dave Davis, Crane Charters, Ed Walsh, Harry Metzler, Bob Damask, Tom Rose, Coach Nort Thornton, Nathan Ballard, Angelo Guttadauro, Kelly Brindamour, David Mote, John Kelly, Manager John Cutting. SHOULD BE RED-HOT NEXT YEAR β Lack of experience, a turnout of mostly sophomores, and an almost strictly collegiate schedule paved a rough road for Paly's water polo team last fall, but the out- look for next year is bright. Frosh teams from Stanford, California, and San Jose State ha'd little trouble with Coach Nort Thornton's water poloists last year although the Vtkes did put forth some brilliant efforts in some games. Their only two victories of the season were over Livermore, as Sequoia β the other high school team they met β beat them also. VARSITY BASKETBALL Front Row: Bob Gibson, Dick Taylor Yosh Kumagai, Glade Williams Howard Young, Fred Kemper, Chris Schinlc, Middle Row: Bucky Armstrong, Don Peterson, Ken Green, George Conner, Blaine Huntsman, Leon Wenti, John Fair- born. Top Row: Tom Holland, Rudy Ligtelyn, Don Kenyon, Rink Babka, Bob Huebner, Don Bishop, Chuck DePew, Coach George Hurley. TWIN CHAMPEENS β For the first time in a great many years, Palo Alto High's varsity and light- weight cagers completed the season with a championship apiece. The I30's swept the first two games of an SPAL-NPAL playoff with Capuchino after coming out on top of the southern division. Paly's var- sity split the first two playoff games with an equally potent Capuchino squad, and came from behind to grab the final tilt at Stanford in an old-fashioned thriller. Result: two titleholders from Paly β not since 1941 has the feat been equalled! The varsity, which completed the season with 19 wins against 5 losses, was led all the way by all-PAL seniors Blaine Huntsman, Rink Babka, and Don Kenyon (second team). Juniors Jon Huntsman and fiery Yosh Kumagai filled out the starting five, which was supplemented by Chris Schink, Fred Kemper, and Glade Williams β all saw plenty of action. Others to see limited activity were Rudy Ligtelyn, Don Peterson, Tom Holland, and Bob Huebner. Next year's varsity can look to Don Bishop, Leon Wenti, 130's BASKETBALL Fronf Row: Vance Israel, Bob Oda Andy Wilson, Bob Foy, Bob Haywood Gene Bettencourt, Dennis Brewick. Ken Green. Howard Young, and John Fairborn along with Jon Huntsman and Kumagai. Paly's trip to Berkeley could be left out of this story but something should be mentioned about the disastrous losses to powerful St. Ignatius (eventual winner) and Albany there. It's a cinch that if George Hurley ever takes another team there it'll be a winner β otherwise it's not worth the trip. The lightweights, led by all-PAL and league leading scorer Jim Hubbard, wound up their season with 15 wins and 4 losses. Under the leadership of freshman mentor Hank Hilburn the '30's at times paced the varsity and threatened to surpass their record. Along with Hubbard the team was sparked by second team all-PAL guard Vance Israel, Jim Norman, Bill Sturgeon, Bob Haywood, Earl Harju, Gene Bettencourt, and Gary Nauman. Next year's squad, will find all but Hubbard reluming. I'M GETTIN' RID OF THIS. QUICK β Lightweight Bob Hay- wood is hemmed in by Menlo-Atherton cagers. Bottom Row: Tim Lamb, Bob Youngberg, Andy Wilson, Bob Bobrink, TENNIS STILL GOING STRONG β Paly's tennis team has experienced its ups and downs, and had won two of its four PAL matches at press time (mid-season). After shutting out Capuchino, 5-0, Paul Engelcke's netters lost to Burlingame, 5-0; San Mateo, 4-1; and then blanked San Jose, 5-0, Vance Israel has been Paly's outstanding tennisman, capturing three of his four PAL matches. Jack Thomas plays in the number two position, while Jim Norman holds down the third spot. Jack Isberg and Howard Young form Paly's top doubles team, with Don Bailey and Bob Bobrink in the second doubles position. Top Row: Ron Sheppard, Grant Everett, Neville Griffin. Bottom Row: G ary McAuliffe, Holden Brink. At Right: Co-coaches William Hutchinson and Roland Bartholomew tackle their toughest problem β John Roodhouse (missing from picture at left). HARD AT WORK β At press time Palo Alto's varsity track team, again coached by Forrest Jamie- son, seems well on its way to high PAL recognition. Topping the list of track standouts are Roger Stephens, Ron Larrieu, Frank Bragg, and Joe Fabrizio in the distance events; Don Okazaki, Bill Clark, Wally Wrathall, and Henry Sanchez in the middle distances; and in the short sprints John Tynan, Gary Greenberg, and Del Boccignone along with Clark β all versatile boys who are burning up the cinder- paths. In field events the following men are living up to previous forecasts: Polevaulters Wally North, who also doubles in the low hurdles, and Mel Biggs; broadjumpers Gene Bettencourt, Del Boccignone, and OFF AND RUNNING β Sprinters John Tynan, Del Boccignone, Jorma Piipari, and Bill Clark get the starting gun. LIGHTWEIGHT TRACK Front Row: Manager John Brown, Jim Moore, Ted Pollard, Roy Saito, Hatsuo Kanazawa, Les Cowger, Doug Bal- comb, Richard Wedge. Coach Wes Fisher. Top Row: Manager Malcolm Hupp. Frank Tao, Steve Johnson, Don Brown, Jerry Collins, Joe Edmiston, Richard Simpson, Manager Bob Aparton. Yosh Kumagai; highjumpers Pete Sanford, Del Boccignone, and John Tynan; and weightmen Rink Babka and Pat Patterson. As for the lightweights, many have been moved up for varsity competition. All told they have prov- en themselves capable and should provide many new records before the season's finished. I hose who have shown good potential to date are runners Tom Cathcart, Alan Garde, Steve John- son, and Don Brown; class C runners Richard Wedge, Roy Saito, and Ted Pollard; hurdlers Steve Brown and Phil Lanterman, fieldmen Jim Moore, Dick Simpson, Hotsuo Kanazawa, Dick Payne, and Doug Balcomb. The local lightweights are consistently improving with every meet. EARLY MEET β Start of a distance event on a grass track against Menlo-A+herton. Paly runners from front to back are Don Okaiaki. Top Row: Coach Nort Thornton, Bob Bell, Bill Harper, Manager Jim Jones, Hugh Hollingsworth, Todd Morrison. APPEAR HEADED FOR ANOTHER TITLE β Only a terrific Hayward team has been able to stop Paly's varsity and lightweight swim teams at press time in nine efforts to date, and the local squads both appear on their way to Peninsula Athletic League championships. Coach Nort Thornton, in his ninth year af coaching here, hasn't the material he has had in past years but currently has a record of 109 wins against only three losses at Paly. The Viking varsity has shown touches of greatness, most of it being in the work of backstroker Cecil Front Row: Donald Tuttle, Mike Carson, Bob Haywood, Ronald Tuttle, Jack Kidder. Cutting, breaststroker Jim McCarthy, and freestylers George Nuckton, Owen Gillbergh, Todd Morri- son and Harlow Rothert. Hugh Hollingsworth has done the springboard work, and Kirty Kittoe and Don Kenyon are holding their own in the individual medley. The medley relay team of Cutting, Mc- Carthy, and Nuckton is currently on its way to a new PAL record, judging by previous clockings. The varsity's depth will probably be its victory ticket to Paly's 21st PAL championship. The local lightweights are just as strong in every event as is the varsity. Ron and Don Tuttle have been terrific to date in the breaststroke and backstroke; Jim Liston, Bob DeVoto, and Crane Charters are the top men in the freestyle events; and Mike Carson, NCS champ, is again the lightweight diving star. I JUST LOVE TO SWIM β That what Don Kan- yon, individual medley artist, appears to be thinking es he emerges from local pool in recent meet. f TIME β Cecil Cutting (left) takes time out for a few extra backstroke and Sequoia Coach Bruce Herlen (right) brightens the local pool with ring exhibition. FIGHTING FOR FIRST DIVISION β Coach Hugh McWilliams' varsity baseballers are making a determined bid to finish in the first division of the PAL, and hold a 1-2 record at press time. Long ball hitting outfielder Pat Parise is currently the Vikes' top PAL candidate, as he is slugging the ball for a .500 average, with more than half of his hits going for extra bases. The other two leading hitters are also outfielders β Fred Kemper and Lynn Leigh. Coach McWilliams has been forced to use a two-man pitching staff, consisting of Morris Turner (1-0) and Stacey Hennel (0-4). Turner graduates this year along with the entire outfield and catching staff. However, infielders Bucky Armstrong, Dick Rumminger, Mickey Scofield, Jim Campbell, and Hen- nel will return to form the nucleus of what should be a good 1955 ball club. Campbell, the long ball hitting shortstop, shapes up as the top prospect on the club. They hold a 2-2 league record, and are 3-2 overall. Included in their record are losses to Capu- chino. 7-1, Menlo-Atherton, 3-1, and wins over Menlo, 22-1, San Jose, 7-4, and Burlingame, 4-3. Currently leading the squad are these hot prospects for next year's varsity: hard hitting catcher Gary Madrigan, classy shortstop Dennis Brewick, long ball slugging first sacker Noel Barnes, and un- defeated hurler Eddie Armstrong. BEHIND THE SCENES β The coaches on this page have just completed another chapter of sports at Palo Alto High School β with the usual amount of hard work involved. George Hurley finished his first year as Athletic Director with the same finesse that the late Hod Ray was so well known for, and the year in general was one of the finest in local history. Two basketball championships, a soph foot- ball title, and possibly swimming and baseball championships β which are as yet undecided as we go to press β provided the high points. Also new to their positions were Hugh McWil- liams, brought in from College of the Pacific to suc- ceed Bruce Goshorn at the varsity football post; Alvin Mercer, native of the midwest who engineered the soph gridders to the PAL crown; and Henry Hil- burn, who took over lightweight basketball and turn- ed it into a season of triumph and championship. Coach Nort Thornton seems well on his way to an- other PAL title in his ninth year of coaching here; Wes Fisher became all the more likeable in his tutoring of wrestling, football, and track; and Paul Engelcke produced a potent tennis team for the second consecutive year. COMMENCEMENT Lives pale like twilight shadows on a wall Through years too shapeless fast, Young faces fade when ceremonies call β Yet memory may last. School days scarce brush eternity's yardstick. The wisdom, troubles, cheer, All happen and dissolve too cruelly quick; Yet never mock one year. This span of days is long enough for one Who has the teacher's chair, To learn that students truly are the sun, And he the ground too bare. He thanks you, patient, sweet, and eager band, For faith which would not dim, He hopes that life may seem to you as grand As you have seemed to him. β Robert Gene Bander
