f Scp%VKM pn3 MADRONO - 1953 PUBLISHED BY THE STUDENTS OF PALO ALTO HIGH SCHOOL PALO ALTO, CALIFORNIA We the class of 1953 dedicate this book to you, Mrs. Kizer, in apprecia- tion of your constant, unfailing guidance and consideration throughout our three years here. May others who fol- low us be as fortunate as we in having a counselor as wise and understand- ing as you have been. A FOREWORD FROM OUR PRINCIPAL Ivan H, Linder,, Principal To the students of Paly High: The release of the 1953 Madrono coincides with the opening of the commence- ment season which for the most part is a very happy season not untouched with re- grets at the depar+ure of the members of this year's class. Most of us find it difficult to realize the amount of careful planning and hard work which the sponsor and the staff put into the production of the yearbook. In this yearbook the Class of 1953, through their elected representatives, under- takes to capture and preserve for all Paly students the highlights of the school, the photos of class members, and pictures of activities in which all Paly students may engage. Our Madrono, from year to year, has been of uniformly high quality, and, yet, each class undertakes to introduce new features which will make of it the very best book possible within the limits of financial resources. Being completely student managed the yearbook provides an accurate mirror of your life at Paly High which you can ill afford to leave to the vagaries of unprompted memory. Moreover, within its covers it holds glimpses of school life which will touch off chain reactions of memory and’ hence will become more and more valuable to you as your high school days recede in memory. With this issue of the Madrono our very best wishes to the Class of 1953. Faculty and students join me in wishing for the Class of 1953 that for them opportunities be both plentiful and promising, and that they may approach the future as though walk- ing in upright confidence into the lavender-hued splendor of a June sunrise. Ivan H. Linder A FAREWELL TO THE CLASS OF 1953 As I write this, the second semester has hardly begun and there are myriads of details to which we all must attend before we part. You, Class of 1953, I shall long remember and cherish for I have thoroughly enjoyed our very pleasant association and friendships. You have dis- tinguished yourselves in so many ways — you have had the finest Junior Prom ever, a wonderful Senior Ball; and you have had some of the most outstanding scholars the school has ever known. So many of your affairs have been so successful because of thoroughly good student leader- ship, and to the leaders of this class may I offer a special tribute and my heartfelt thanks. To all of you I wish success and happiness as you travel a new course into uncharted seas. My hopes go with you that you may find an interesting and fruitful life. Good luck and farewell! Very sincerely, Evelyn M. Kizer SENIOR COUNCIL Front: M. Dunham, EL Wilson, C. Clifford, W. Bloom, J. Hathaway. Top: J. D. Northway, G. Wabbar, F. Shoup, P. Kelly, B. Kwong, N. Schmidt. © Jr iTl; Nick Schmidt Vice-President SENIOR HISTORY With all the ir hopes and dreams for three years centered on graduation in 1953, the Seniors now face their goal with mingled happiness and regret. This final year, however, has been packed with work and fun to make it the best and fullest the class has ever had. We have taken part in athletics, dramatics, music, girls' and boys' leagues, language clubs, the student court, publications, and numerous social events; and in each case names of the members of the class of '53 stand at the top of the list in bold letters as among the successful. As we look back over our three terrific years at Paly, into our minds the vision of the Junior Prom which created for us the illusion of a mardi-Gras comes first; followed by the highly-successful Spring Play, Lost Horizon, in which members of the class of '53 excelled. As a result of the elections last May, Bill Kwong was elected the leader of the class of 1953 for the second time in his high school career, the first being in his sophomore year. Nick Schmidt was elected to the vice-presidency, and Joan Hathaway to the secretary-treasurer position. Last but not least, our senior year has come and almost gone. But a lot has hap- pened to make it unforgetable in every way. The Girls' annual Jinx went over very successfully this year. It ran for two nights in- stead of one. Our basketball team came very close to winning all-PAL but was de- feated by Lincoln 39-41 in a playoff. The Senior Ball was high-lighted by entertain- ment presented to the crowd in keeping with the theme Deep South. Also some- thing new was added this year by Jean Lenzen. It was the Senior Party which was held in the choir room. A buffet dinner, entertainment and dancing were offered to seniors only. As the copy goes to press, the Seniors are eagerly looking forward to Senior Week which will conclude their high school career. Only one Friday after- noon ended in cheers for the Paly rooters, among a string of bleak losses. Although the Viking footballers wound up the I 952 season in the doorway of the Peninsula Ath- letic cellar with a winless slate, they were saved from last place and complete humiliation on that one bright day, by taking the spoiler's role and deadlocking a highly favored San Mateo eleven 7 to 7. The upset snapped a six-game losing streak and the Norsemen lit into arch-rival Sequoia with spirits high, only to fall again, 20-6. Coach Bruce Goshorn, succeeding the late Hod Ray at the helm of the great Norse Horde, faced a green aggregation of gridiron hopefuls and an eighteen-game victory string at the season's start, and did an outstanding job in piecing together the inexperienced players into the team they produced. Only a handful of veterans remained from the 1951 championship squad. One of these veterans, George Read, proved to be the main threat in the Paly attack. Read sparkled at both offensive end and defensive tackle throughout the season, and eventually landed a place on the mythical all-PAL second team. Despite Paly's poor season, the outlook for the next year is bright — it might be an entirely differ- ent story. JUST ONE MORE STEP — In tea m's best effort of the season, junior Halfback Don Hampton, of whom greet things are expected next year, barrels into the end zone for score that deadlocked league-leading San Matao. 7-7, in giant upset. Don Hampton, half AND AWAY WE GO — Boccignone zigzags around iaft end in the Big Game. Potent plus, Paly's 1952 sophomore footballers ended up on top in the PAL frosh-soph grid race, to bring in at least one blue ribbon in the year's so-so sports scene. Wes Fisher, inaugurating his first season as head coach, seven times guided his team to victory in eight games, missing an unblemished record by but one point. The championship was the first since the class of '52 turned the trick in 1949. Coach Fisher found himself faced with talent galore at the season's start, much of which might turn next year's varsity into a winning aggregation. New to the scene was John Tynan in a magnifi- cant season at full back and is one of 1953's hottest varsity prospects. Other probable varsity grid- ders: John Ronald, Leon Wentz, Don Bishop, Bob Walters, Dick Robinson, Dick Callahan, and Jim McCarthy. The Vikings dumped their first four opponents with little difficulty — Carlmont, Capuchino, South San Francisco, and Burlingame fell in order. Then a little trouble with Menlo-Atherton, 12-6, a little more with Jefferson, and boom! A little overconfidence and the roof fell in, San Mateo winning, 20-19. Nevertheless, the PAL crown was in the bag, and Paly captured the title for good with an easy triumph in the li'l Big Game with Sequoia, 33-6. 1952 FIRST STRING Lies: Don Bishop, Dick Robinson, Chris Ey, Towru IkecU, Bob Beff, Bob Walters, Leon Wenti. BIG IMPROVEMENT1 Displaying a tremendous improvement over last year's record, Paly's class C and D basketballers swept through good and mediocre seasons, respectively, under the direction of George Hurley, who replaced William Hutchinson as coach, flie I20's managed to break even, winning 7 and dropping 6, and the 110's fared not quite so well, with 4 won and 9 tost, J, D. Northway, in his second year of participation, sparked the I20's throughout the season with the help of other first stringers Vance Israel, Bob Haywood, and Neville Griffin. Standouts included Captain Chuck Shaffer, Bill Gibson, high scorer, Dave Freidenrich, Cecil Cut- ting, and Ted Farmer. Lack of depth on the team appeared to be the result of an extremely light turn- out. As the PAL was discontinued in water polo, Paly will again have trouble producing a winning team next year, as an all-collegiate schedule, wtih the exception of Sequoia, is in store for the now inde- pendent team. YE STRONG MEN Looking better in every match, Paly's 1953 grunt 'n groan men ended their season with an unimpres- sive one-victory, five-loss, record, but the year was far more successful than the record might indicate. The Vikings suffered losses to San Jose, Sequoia, Gilroy, and twice to Menlo-Atherton, while picking up their only win over Carlmont. Despite the lopsided slate, however, the Norse placed third in the PAL Tournament, behind San Jose and Sequoia. Two local wrestlers qualified for the NCS Tourney — Albert Perkins and Tarris Philyaw. Other sterling Vike grapplers were lighter weights Art Hill, Frank Bragg, and Bob Haywood; middleweights George Nuckton, John Ware, and Pierre Sicard; and heavier Doug Paulin, and Henry Nuckton. THE BREATHLESS BOYS The renewal of cross-country at Paly resulted in an outstanding season for the distance men of Coach Forrest Jamieson, as they captured six victories against but a single loss for the season. Coach Jamieson termed the squad as one of the better cross-country teams in the state. Roger Stephens stole the season's spotlight lock, sfock, and barrel, winning easily his every race but two — which he lost to Jack Jones of Sequoia twice. ALMOST1 The '53 lightweight cagers compiled a season's record of 14 wins and 6 losses. True, this is not a phenomenal record. However, our I30's were a never-say die type of team. They never quit and always showed the spirit and training encouraged by Coach Durket. Coming from behind on many occasions they made the opponents look completely outclassed with a display of remarkable potential. Standouts in- cluded all-SPAL forward Dake Engelcke, Jim Hubbard, and Yosh Kumagai; the latter two won second team and honorable mention ratings. Dependable players Fred Kemper, Roger Stephens, and Lynn Leigh all aided the cause. Yes, the hustling hoops+ers of Coach George Hurley surprised nearly everyone concerned and wound up their 1952-53 season tied for first place in the newly formed SPAL Then, in the extra all-or-nothing playoff with Lincoln of San Jose the roof fell in by a measly two points, as we were edged 41 to 39. But enough of what might have happened and down to the facts! Surpassing the ratings of fans and sportswriters alike, the locals really finished In fine style. As the SPAL schedule included the playing of each team twice, Paly went through the season winning seven and dropping four — one each to Menlo-Atherton, Sequoia, Willow Glen, and Lincoln, Records and game scores, however, are dry, whereas those who played and played well will recall memories in years to come. Palo Alto had one of the best balanced teams in the league as the all-star ratings proved. Led by Blaine Huntsman, who placed first team all-SPAL, and Fred Lindholm, who grabbed a spot on the sec- ond mythical five, the Vikes really showed some splendid basketball ability. Earning honorable men- tion on the all-star squad were Rink Babka, one of the league's top rebounders, and Bob Hamlett, whose hot and cold shooting eye often decided whether the Norse won or not. Also playing outstanding ball were part-time first stringers Pete Schink, Bill Calloway, Don Kenyon, and Bill Gibson. (According to many fans Schink indeed deserved an SPAL honorable mention rat- ing). Others who saw considerable action for the Hurteymen: Rudy Ligtelyn, Phil Tollner, Scott Pfersol, and Glade Williams. THAT SHOT WON T BE STOPPED — Huntsman's not waving at friends: he's executing perfectly his famed hook shot, which gave him a runner-up spot in PAL scoring. Only other identifiable Paly player is Hamlett, at left (white uniform). YES, I'VE GOT FIVE FINGERS — Rink Babka proves with his left hand that he has all the fingers he needs while he scores two points with his right (picture at left), and Huntsman brings the crowd to its feet in shot at right. 1 VARSITY TRACK Kneeling; R. Although the newly form- ed SPAL schedule was supposedly weak, our men In green and white managed to compile a 4-1 won- loss record by April 28, before entering the PAL Finals. Getting right down to the facts, Paly was in a class of its own on the cinderpaths, easily defeating PAL opponents Menlo-Atherton. San Jose, Sequoia, and Willow Glen while losing only to Lincoln. After the SPAL Trials at San Jose, the locals placed a total of twelve entrants in the Finals — more than any other school. Weak season? Weak team? Not so far! Standouts in the various events were as follows: Sprints — Lloyd Carter, John Tynan, Bill Gibson, and Pierre Sicard; Hurdles — J. D. Junior John Kirschner has collected a good share of double victories in the 200-yard free and individual medley, and appears well on his way for more. Soph flash George Nuckton is going to be some champion in future years — he's tops in the 100-yard freestyle. Backstroke standouts were Cecil Cutting and Ray Dils. AlUAmeria in his sophomore year, Lynn Leigh often stole the show in meets with spectacular div- ing exhibitions, his best to date totaling 247.7 points. Jack Mott was always an automatic runner-up, giving Paly a solid 1-2 springboard punch. STILL LOOKING FOR A WIN As the Madrono goes to press, the Viking nine has started the second round of S.P.A.L. play still searching for that first big win. Showing top notch form in some games and appearing very sloppy in others, Paly has, surprisingly enough, some of the league's best material, Ronnie Olmstead earns our mention as the league's outstanding catcher even though the season is yet to be finished. Jim Campbell, soph flash, needs only the polish of more games to rate with the best of high school shortstops. Others who have made this an interesting season were the following: Morris Turner, Dick Maxwell, Scooter Piersol, and often Campbell, on the mound; John Baker, Dick Clark, and Bob Hamlett, in the infield; and Wes Dower, Dell Boccignone, Al Irish, and Fred Kemper, roaming the pastures. Under Coach Durket's guiding hand they are sure to win that ball game be- fore the season ends. The outlook for the sophomore squad has been almost as poor. However, they have only lost five straight games to the varsity s six, to date. Coach Paul Engelcke BETTER THAN LAST YEAR Coach Paul Engelcke produced a surprisingly effective tennis squad this year, which at press time had a total of ten wins and four losses. The only hitch involved was the fact that graduation will take half the squad, seriously weakening next year's team. Four will be lost at the end of this season: Al Keller, Ken Doyle, Pete Severson, and Pete Schink, all of whom were outstanding this past season. Coach Engelcke cited the mentioned quartet and sophomores Vance Israel and Jim Norman as essential in the gaining of the locals' victories. Paly triumphed twice over Campbell, and Mountain View and once over Menlo-Atherton, Los Gatos, Lincoln, and San Jose at press time, with losses going to Sequoia twice and Burlingame and San Mateo, GOLF Kneeling: N. Griffin, P. Minkler, J. Roodhouse, L. Maynard. Standing: R. Sheppard, T. Everett, J, Day, A. Brandin, G. Smith, Coach 8. Hutchinson. WHO KNOWS? As this was written the golf team had yet to have a match, although a tentative schedule was mapped out. Here's hoping this year's aggregation improves over the winless divotmen of last season. These Guys Did the Work” Small glory and hard work have always been and certainly were last year the char- acteristics of Paly coaches. The men whose pictures are printed below are only six of the many who worked throughout the year to produce one of the more unforgetable years in sports in Palo Alto High history. These men worked with impartiality, patience, and companionship in promoting ath- letic talent in all sports, both major and minor, whether winning or losing. Highlighting the coaching year was the advancement of George Hurley, fifteen years affiliated with the Paly athletic department, to department head of physical edu- cation. Likeable Mentor Hurley has coached almost every sport at Paly at one time or another in past years, and next year he will again be in charge of varsity and all lightweight basketball, besides his administrative duties. Shocking and disheartening was the news of the resignation of popular varsity foot- ball Coach Bruce Goshorn. Despite a poor season at the helm of the Paly footballers, Mr. Goshorn won the respect and admiration of the entire student body during his brief stay here. Thus the statement, win a few here, lose a few there, takes on an added meaning as another chapter in the book of sports at Palo Alto High comes to an end.
