High school graduation is important to you and will appear more important with the passing of years. Paly manages to keep rather close contact with many of its graduatesg we should like to do so with all of you. Whether you go on to further education or go direct- ly into some form of employment, we should like each of you to feel our continued interest in you. We are inclined to believe that we know about what each of you will do as to quality of performance after you leave high schoolg naturally we base this on your performance here. We could be very mistaken in individual cases. Unless the class of 1950 is an excep- tion to the long list of Paly classes of previous years, about eighty per cent of you will continue to perform as you have in high school, another thirteen per cent will do poorer, and only about seven per cent will do better. To which of these groups you belong ought to be a question of very personal concern to each of you. But regardless of this classification by future performance, we shall always be inter- ested in your achievements and your problems. Come back to Paly and tell us about them. The best wishes of the faculty and students ac- company my own wish for the very best of good fortune for each of you. Very sincerely, Nffaqay Principal MR. EVELYN KIZER Senior Counselor To the Class of 1950: You have the distinction of graduating at the middle of the twentieth century. Almost all of you will live, no doubt, to see this century pass and another arrive fresh and new at a time when you have reached or passed the apex of your careers. As I sit here on a cold March evening penning this farewell to you, a vision passes before me, and I See several famous persons among you: I see many of you, although not so famous, doing fine things and making your contributions in your communities and homes. Last but not least I see a tremendous group of parents struggling with problems of adolescent sons and daughters, while another group looks smugly on because they have already passed that hurdle. In that vision I see the age-old problems still to be solved. To you, Class of 1950, I wish success and happiness in the solving of these coming problems. Sincerely, SD-LQA.KYU :Mo EVELYN KI ZER SENIOR COUNCIL Top Row: C. Keil, D. Rhoades, R. Hendrickson, C. Hoppe. Second Row: M. Munson, G. Wright, I. Peterson, Mrs. Kizer. Bottom Row: L. Long, V. SENIOR CLASS HISTORY We have reached the halfway mark in the century. We are closing behind us fifty years of history and opening fifty years of future. The day of graduation is quite similar in that We are pushing our childhood days behind us and looking forward to a full adult life. But let's look back for a few minutes on our three years at Paly. During those years the thoughtful guidance of Mrs. Kizer, our counselor, helped us pursue our school activities. Sophomore class officers Dick Herndon, Iudy Cleaver, Mary Lee- Billings, and Barbara Green held the reins of rule and planned the Carnival as our class party. The arrival of the class rings created quite a stir in our lunior year. In spring there was the Iunior party, with swimming, volleyball, and dancing. Martha Brown represented us at Girls' State, and Bill Northway was chosen for Boys' State. Class officers Were: Steve Bennett, Gloria Wright, and Iirn Cornish. At last we had acquired the dignity of being seniors. Fine leaders, athletes, scholars, and musi- cians gave credit to their school and class. Steve Bennett, Margie McCall, Ioanne Peterson, and Virginia Cox were class officers. The production of DEAR RUTI-l f was a highlight of our senior year. And then we looked forward to Senior Week, with the Senior Party, the Com- mencement Formal, and finally, Graduation. ,- L - . - 'ui LEROY ERNEST AI-IRENS MARY IANE ALDEN IEAN RAE ALEXANDER BEATRICE LINDA ALKSNE Block P Pres. AHRENS Senior Iohnny Bettencourt at left half and junior Merle Flattley at left end were All-P.A.I... first string choices for their excellent performances. By the middle of the year, seven other juniors had joined Flattley on the first string and had put some punch into the team. The junior crop and the champion sophomores made expectations for 1950 run sky-high. The Vikings started badly, losing practice games to Salinas, 12-9, and Watsonville, 12-U, with much fumbling and ragged play. And then they rallied around little Bob Pederson, at quarterback and upset Burlingame, 19-13, Bettencourt ran wild against San Mateo and Paly won, 32-13, and South City fell to the tune of 26-0 in a game which saw Pederson's leg broken. San lose, eventual league champs, powered out a 32-12 win. Then Paly pulled a miracle and upset Lincoln, 32-28, in a topsy-turvy thriller won on a last minute Grant-to-Flattley pass. After this, things became a bit anti-climactic and the Norse got their share of losing to lefferson and Sequoia, the latter, however, an excellent and exciting Big Game, 14-13 until Sequoia intercepted a pass with two minutes to go and won, Zl-13. f? Paly's soph footballers did the school proud, winning the PAL championship by beating every team in the league, finishing the year by licking previously unbeaten Sequoia, 2-0, in a rugged thriller. Altogether it was one of the finest teams the frosh-soph league has seen in years, with a steady, dangerous running attack spearheaded by Frankie Mills, the league's best player and a fast and slippery runner, and Iirn Farrell, another fine back. On defense the team charged hard and made opponents lose more yards than they gained. When it passed-usually Farrell to Iohn Stewart-the result was very often a surprise touchdown. Coach George Hurley developed a tight little nucleus of good players, starting them in the T formation but shifting to the single wing to take advantage of Mills' running. Besides Stewart, a first-class end, such linemen as Guards Ted Davidson and A1 Casarotti and Tackle Cris Marshall stood out-in fact the whole line put a great deal ol strength and spirit into its play. Mills and Farrell sparkled among the backs, and wingback Denny Amstutz also looked good. WATER POLO Top Row: E. Morinan, Mgr, Browning, N. Thornton Ir., Hibner, G. Otter, E. Hill, Muller, R. T Paly's water polo team, under Nort Thornton's able coaching, won every PAL game and finished by dunking Sequoia, 8-5, to capture the league championship. Only teams to beat the Palywogs in the entire season were the Stanford and California freshmen, and even these had a big fight on their hands. ln the crucial Sequoia game, Chet Kell bottled up the Cherokees' lim Gaughran to enable Paly to win. Keil was shifted from the business of goal-scoring when Gaughran got red hot early in the game. Taylor Hathaway and the huge Keil were high scoring stars and all-PAL forwards, the former leading the PAL in scoring. Steve Bennett was the third Vike to be named all-PAL, although he won honors as a good guard, he was as good a goalie as the league has seen in years when he got in the cage. Cross country is a competitive team sport at Paly for the first time, and was successful enough to convince track mentor Hod Ray of its value for developing distance men. The harriers had two dual meets in which they took on some ot San Franciscds best. The first was a six-lap against Lowell at halftime of the Paly-Burlingame football game, won individually by Paly's Paul Bowen in 7.42 but taken by Lowell by a 23-32 score. More practice, however, led to a win over the city champion Polytechnic team, 23-32, in a 1.9 mile race in Golden Gate Park. Bowen won in 9:57, with Dick Hanna third, Ole Holsti tourth, Earl VanWagoner fifth and Ronnie Plough tenth. VARSITY BASKETBALL Top row: I. Stewart, D. Sonnichsen, K. Grant, R. McDowell, B. Haight, I. The team never really fitted together very well, and Coach George Hurley tried many combinations without outstanding success. The main trouble was a lack ot a star shot behind whom the team could rally. In the end Paly won 3 and lost 5 in the PAL and had a 12 and 'I total record, which shows it at least had a number ot good basketballers. Bob Pederson, only 5 ft. 8 inches but easily the team's best shot, was the highest scorer as soon as his football injuries were cured. Before that the star had been Larry Ramm, who shot so much he always led the scoring, but Hamm transferred to Sequoia after two league games. Merle Flattley was most consistent, although not an accurate shot. Others who took their turns doing fairly well were Bob Brogan, Bob Armstrong, lim Cor- nish, Art Fish, Bill Beck, Don Sonnichsen, Pete Pitsker, Al Thomson, Otto Schleich and Bruce Haight. Actually there was no regular first string, these players all started sometimes. Y P Q r 442 I 3 xx Q 1 5. 'M Top row: D. Cunningham, P. Zschokke, D. Berg, D. Rhoades, R. Plough, I. Farrell. The team was tast and smoothly knitted together, with no individual standing out much but with teamwork and a large number of plays. Credit lor much ofthe Vikes' success should go to Coach Ralph Mason, who taught the squad a lot of basketball. Dean Berg at center was top scorer for Paly in the league season and was honored with an All-PAL berth. Herc Smith was captain and perhaps the lastest and best floor player of the whole team. Frank Mills played a tremendous game against Sequoia and was another standout. Until he became ineligible, Iim Farrell was a line rebounder and play maker. Dick Cunningham had a good shooting eye and topoed the scorers as often as not. Little Willie Wan was very last and a smooth team cog, while Sid Chew was a steady performer, both in his floor work and his shooting. Ronnie Plough was the other valuable link in a team where eight men were almost interchangeable parts of the well-oiled Mason machine. In that one, Roger Fleischmann shot 90 to spark the Vikings, lim McGuy shot 93, Ole Holsti 94, and Paul Bowen 99, to round out the top lour scores. Charley Cl'lo1e in Onel Hoppe and Dave Peery were over 100, but often shoot in the 90's. Fleischmann, a sopho- more, is the most promising golfer of the six. WRESTLING The year 1950 marked the third season lor wrestling at Paly. Unlike the professionals, the high school wrestlers engage in a keen competitive sport and not a show, and Paly boys put their best grips forward on the mat. Unfortunately the wrest- lers had their troubles. For one thing, the only competition they could muster was from Sequoia, Fremont and San Iose, and all three are long-time masters of the wrestling art. For another, Coach Sam Lawson, a very expert tutor indeed, was unable to continue his after-school commuting from Cupertino half way through the season. ln spite of these things, the wrestling team did quite well, salvaging some individual glory even in losing to the crack opposing schools. In a school which for l2 years had never won more than 3 games a season, an incredible transforma- tion took place. As we went to press the horsehiders had won four out of four in PAL play and were out in front of the league, with Iefferson, which Paly beat Z-1, in second. A league title seemed suddenly a very attainable goal for a team which had lost 16 straight including 5 no-hitters in two previous years. In the jockeys perch on this fleet long shot was Ralph Mason, a new coach at Paly but one with the goods, as he had already demonstrated with the lightweight basketballers and as Hod Rays football assistant. Only three seniors were seeing regular action for the Vikings, often only two. Randy Curtiss was the man with the trusty right arm whose hurling won all four games. At the catching end was Willie Wan, with Al Thomson, Dick Cunningham, Bob Pederson and Frank Mills as infielders and Bob Brogan--whose homer won the San Mateo game-Kevin Grant, and Dale Van Slyke or Otto Schleich in the outfield. Everyone of them could hit, with Cunningham, Schleich, Mills and Brogan probably the most consistent in the stick-swinging department. Willie Wan lays down a bunt. The Stretgh at first' N.. .rin . SWIIVIMING Coach Nort Thornton's swimming team had a 60-meet winning streak extending as far back as Nort's coaching career at Paly, and seemed likely to extend it, Number 60 was a 42-33 win over Berkeley, in what was considered Paly's toughest meet. The swimmers were at least as good as usual, which means very good indeed, and figured to win their 25th straight P.A.l., championship despite some Sequoia aces. The stars were many, and were due to improve their already outstanding marks. Bob Armstrong had clipped off a 57.0 in the l00 already, Chet Keil had sped through the backstroke in 11082, and Chuck Haywood had 1:10 in the breastroke. Two sophomores were going great, Ed Hardy making l:45.0 in the individual medley and Iohn Radford chalking up 2111.9 in the 200, where he and Don Rhoades, with a 2:ll.7 best, were putting on some fast races. Keil-Williams-Armstrong had been clocked at 128.3 in the medley relays, although they did not usually swim this together, and Keil-Hill-Armstrong Hardy had 1143 in the 200, the Vikings had a good chance of smashing the records in both. Williams was up with Haywood in the breastroke at l:l3.2, compared to Haywood's l:ll.7 time in last year's P.A.l.. In the backstroke, Taylor Hathaway backed Keil with l:l3.2. ln addition to being a breastroker Haywood was a crack diver, and so was NCS champ Gordon Otter. Hill f26.4I and Paul Kelly 127.01 swam the 50, where Keil had 25.4 in practice, while Iack Pool fl:00,7I backed Armstrong in the 100 and also dived well, Williams did the medley in 11507, with Nort Thornton Ir. at 23045. Chuck Haywogd SWIMMING Although not as classy as the varsity, the C1ass B and C swimmers were doing fairly well considering the thinness of their ranks. If they lost a meet, they still made it close and fought hard, and they won much oftener than not. The B's had several starsefree-styler Iohn Dickerson with 28.0 in the 50 and 1202.5 in the 100, breastroker Bill Northway 1-234 for 100 yards, baclcstroker Ed Morinan, 33.5 for 50 yards. Gordon Otter was a crack diver-N.C.S. upset winner in the varsity in 1949-but dived for the varsity much of the time. Dan Cathcart had 36.0 in the backstroke, while Bob Ziegler, at 29.4, was the second man in the 50 and anchored the medley team of Frank Serguson, Northway, and Ziegler. Rich Scholz splashed a 1:11 100 freestyle, and beyond that the team lacked so much manpower it forfeited many a point. The C's were doing much better than Paly C teams usually can because several swimmers made the 1imit. Only San lose appeared stronger in the league. Pa1y's top star was Colburn Wilbur, a 35.5 breastroker over 50 yards and about a 1:24 man in the 100. lim Williams swam the 50 freestyle in 29.4 and the 100 in 108 5. Kal Holsti churned a 29.7 50, Lewis Terman negotiated a 39.0 50 backstroke and the medley team of Terman, Wilbur, and Holsti had 46.7 and was doing very well. Iack Van Bergen, at 1:15 in the 100, rounded out the five mari team, which had won four out of five at press time. VARSITY TRACK Standing: R. Payne, mgr., A. Lynch, L. Ahrens, M. Flattley, B. TRACK Coach Hod Ray did a fine job of building dual meet strength to match the prowess ot other teams in a very strong league. Around a thin and inadequate core of veterans, he developed both depth and individual strength, especially in the field events. The team did remarkably well, losing to only San Mateo, Lincoln, and Burlingame and giving all three a strug- gle. Things would not have been half so good had not a number of track newcomers put on very fine performances. The star was still Paul Bowen, the miler who ran 4 35.9 and was looking toward the State meet. Loren Sorenson was making points right and left, he broadjumped 2l-6713 in winning the San Iose 20-30 Relays, and sprinted for 10.4 and 23.2 official heats. Three other broadjumpers, Merle Flattley, Don Malinoff, and Milan Iones, did l9-7 or better. Discus thrower Iohn Bugge was adding several feet to his tossing every meet, hitting l22-3 against Sequoia and threatening to get some points for Paly in the P.A.L. discus. Don Malinofi was always over ll0, with a ll5-ll best. ln the 440, Ole Holsti ran a sparkling 52.3, while Bruce Haight, his first year out, got down to 529 Three highiumpers, Iohn Stewart, Boy Ahrens, and Iohn Vipham, cleared 5-l0, and pole vaulter Al Lynch had an ll foot best so far. Sophomore Don Sonnichsen's shotpui mark grew to 45-8, with Flattley at 42-ll. TENNIS Paly's tennis team, its strongest in many years, had apparently clinched the PAL after whipping defending champion Burlingame 3-2, and strong San Mateo, 4-l, as well as slaughtering San lose. With its two big opponents' scalps under its belts the team looked like a shoo-in, with only Sequoia to worry about. In lim Cornish and Art Fish the Vikings had the two best players in the league and the best Paly players in many a season. Both are highly regarded in junior circles and are expected to team together to win the PAL and probably the NCS doubles. Cornish, Palo Alto city men's singles champion and Northern California interscholastic doubles champ, was un- defeated for Paly and seemed likely to be ranked high in singles this year. Against San Mateo he thumped Walt Chin, 6-2, 7-5. Fish at his best was Cornish's equal in singles, and looked invincible as he shellacked Howard Dodge, BurlinC1arne's ranked star, 10-8, 6-U, His only loss was to Lowell's ranked Wally Clarke, in the only practice meet which Paly lost. Third singles and unbeaten also in the PAL was Don Keesing. At Burlingame his was the key win. The veteran first doubles pair of Don Bale and Turner Bledsoe scored an upset win against can Mateo and were doing well. The second doubles was Tari Farmanfarmaian and Roger Keesing, the only new players on the first string. Pete Barney, Roger Fleisch- mann, Roland King and lim Cochran were very close behind the first stringers and were seeing plenty of action in the many practice meets.
