Mrs. Maize takes care of the lunch stand during the tournament, prepares the food for the Proms, and also for other banquets during the year. As Seniors, she has helped us with our Searchlight, ordered our pictures, caps and gowns, invitations, and in short has prepared us for the day we will always remember -- graduation. These are just a few of the things she has done for us, and we wish to express our gratitude by dedicating this 1960 Searchlight to her. HEVEL Superintendent of Schools This year is one of the real milestones to be remembered in the history ofthe schools of this district. Instead of a high school with about one-half non-resident pupils and one-half resident pupils, we now have a high school composed of almost all resident pupils. This should draw the entire student body closer together. It is easier for school spirit and loyalty to develop under these conditions. To coin a phrase by Mr. Cummings, the former superintendent, Palmyra High is tops. However, under this new organization, with the help of our new residents, it can become still greater. Ear mm em STANDING: Howard Bier, Harold Phillips, Vice Presidentg Stephen Dearing, Presidentg D. W. Gottman, Secretaryg Luke Logan. SEATED: Floyd Edwards, Treasurerg Mr. Hevel, Superintendent. The never ending procession of years bring us another Searchlight. Insignificant perhaps in the pages of our nation's history, but vital to those of us concerned. It contains the records of our friends whom we have come to know and cherish, remembrance of activities and a reminder of all those things which make up our school life. T 'f' enior KLM Afdfory As we think of graduation drawing nearer, we hear everything from I wish I were a freshman again to Thank goodness I will soon be out but when we do stop to think that there may never be a time when we will all be together again, it is sort of sad. On September 4, 1956, 76 Freshmen entered the portals of Palmyra High in the arch of gaining a better education. On September 11, we held our first class meeting, at which time we elected our sponsors Mrs. McClain and Mr. Ledbetter, and the following officers: President, Alan Luckeg Vice-Presidentg Bobby Zollerg Secretary, Judy Franklin, Treasurer, Sharon Lumpeg Reporter, Sherol Hinds: Student Council Rep- resentatives, Reba Wagner and Richard Ledbetter. On September 25, we were initiated by the sophomores, and on October 23, they entertained us. Our class was represented in the football crowning by Sharon Lumpe and Shirley Meyers who were chosen by the football squad to attend the Queen. The F.F.A, boys chose Laurinda Bringer as freshman Barnwarming attendant, and at the annual Basketball Tournament Judy Franklin represented the class as attendant to the Queen. In September of 1957, 65 entered the doors of P.H,S. as bright and shining sophomores. We chose Miss Peters and Mr. Hoffson as our sponsors, and the following officers: President, Dorothy Stuhlmang Vice-President, Del Colemang Secretary, Margaret Baxter: Treasurer, Carol Comstockg Reporter, Judy Egerg and for our Student Council Representatives, Judy Franklin and Howard Disselhorst. The first event for us was the initiation of the freshmen, and a little later on we gave them a party. In the Homecoming Parade our float with the slogan Keep Kool They Kent Beat Us won third prize. Our attendants to the Queen were Reba Wagner and Dorothy Stuhlman. At the annual Christmas Dance Judy Eger was our Key Club attendant. Our Barnwarming attendant this year was Sharon Kespohl and our attendant to the Basketball Queen was Sherol Hinds, This year 66 entered the doors of P,H,S, as Jolly Juniors with our sponsors Mrs. Ellis and Mr. Ledbetter, and the following officers: President, Kenny McGlothlin: Vice-President, Marion Saunders: Secretary, Judy Franklin: Treasurer, Reba Wagner: Reporter, Margaret Baxter: Student Council Rep- resentatives, Marilyn Meyer and Charlie Johnston. Sergeant-at-arms Don Hevel. Delbert Coleman was chosen Student Council Vice-President. We were proud of all our hard workers as we went over our goal on magazine sales and cleared S551.39, which helped us on our prom. Our leaders were: Group I, Margaret Baxter, Group Il, Dorothy Stuhlman, and our over all chairman was Judy Franklin. Our theme for our prom was Alaskan Ice Palace which was decorated beautifully in white and gold. We danced to the music of Maurice Menge after a delicious meal. Our junior play was The Incompleted Pass which was very successful. Our attendants to the Queens were: Football, Marilyn Meyer: Basketball, Carol Comstock: Key Club, Sherol Hinds: Barnwarming, Sharon Kespohl. Sharon Kespohl was chosen by the faculty to attend Girls' State, and Charlie Johnston to attend Boys' State. Then came our last year at dear old P,H,S, Our sponsors were Mr. Macias and Mr. Looney, We elected the following officers for the year: President, Sharon Kespohl, Vice-President, George O'Brien: Secretary, Reba Wagner, Treasurer, Dorothy Stuhlman, Reporter, Charlie Johnston. Student Council Representatives were Judy Eger and Howard Disselhorst. Margaret Baxter was elected Searchlight Editor with Dorothy Stuhlman as the Assistant Editor and Sherol Hinds Business Manager. Kenny McGlothlin was elected Student Body President. Our Homecoming Float, Let's Lick'm won second prize. Dorothy Stuhlman was elected Football Queen by the Student Body with her attendants Sherol Hinds and Judy Eger. Due to the bad weather, Dorothy was 'browned at the dance that followed the game. We were very proud of Sharon Kespohl who was chosen Barnwarming Queen with her attendant Laurinda Bringer. She was crowned at the annual Barnwarming dance given by the F,F,A, boys, Judy Franklin represented the senior class at the annual Key Club Christmas Dance where she was attendant to the Queen. At the annual Basketball tournament Sherol Hinds was crowned Queen. Carol Comstock was her attendant. Margaret Baxter was elected Searchlight Queen and Don Hevel King. Their attendants were Dorothy Stuhlman, Sharon Lumpe, Kenny McGlothlin, and Richard Ledbetter. The senior play, Happy Daze was very successful and we were very proud of it. Finally came along Baccalaureate, Commencement, and our senior trip. Our trip took us to the southern states of Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, and others. We, the Seniors of '60 sort of feel a soft spot in our hearts for the dear friends and teachers we will never forget, and the fond memories this book holds for us. s- LAURANC E ASHBURN Orland Friendly smile and air, Limpid eyes and light brovsm hair. Bob Ravenscraft. George Donel, As in the past, the Palmyra Panthers started practicing for their 1959 football season on August 15. They were under the direction of Coach Felix Macias and Assistant Coach Roger Hillman. Six lettermen returned this year, while we lost sixteen. One letterman, Bill Menge, transferred to Hannibal High. Due to the lack of experience, our team didn't have a very successful season. The season's record was one win and nine losses. On September 11 we met Brookfield on our field for our first game ofthe season. The Panthers were defeated 34-7, with Delbert Coleman scoring the touchdown, and the extra point. The lack of experience was shown-by the P21I112h9I'S' blocking and tackling. The Panthers met the Christian Brothers High School of Quincy in a home game on September 18, and suffered their second defeat 34-0. The Panthers were competing against a higher classed school, but showed improvement. On September 25 the Panthers traveled to Shelbina where they suffered their third defeat 40-13. We scored in the third quarter on a55 yard pass completion, Del Coleman to Gray Kerrick. In the fourth quarter Del Coleman broke loose for a 65-yard touchdown run, then passed to Kerrick for the extra point. The Panthers were only losing 7-0 at the half, but Shelbina got rolling the second half. The Panthers were defeated by Centralia 31-0 on October 2 on the Centralia field. The Panthers lost their only touchdown, a 78-yard run by Del Coleman in the fourth quarter, when the play was called back on aholding penalty. Centralia went on to win the conference. On October 10 the Panthers were again defeated 13-0 by their rival the McCooey Shamrocks, but we played an extremely good ball game. The game statistics were about even, except in the passing department. Wendel Hoehne, Marvin Boulware. THIRD ROW: Coach Macias, Richard Ledbetter, Tri-Captain: Del Coleman, Tri-Captaing J. R. Fohey, Ordell Johnson, Olan Howard. Gray Kerrick, Paul Lehenbauer, Bruce Bringer, John Hoehne, Charles Duncan, Tri-Captain: Don Hevel, and Assistant Conch, Roger Hillman. Academy in Mexico on October 16. Palmyra's touchdown was made on a 55-yard pass completion from Del Coleman to Ordell Johnson. The most exciting game of the season was played with Carthage here. Although we were defeated 20-13, the game could have gone either way. With nineteen seconds remaining in the game the score was tied 13-13, with Palmyra in possession of the ball. The pass intercepted by Carthage and carried over for the winning touchdown. On October 30 the Palmyra Panthers were defeated by Louisiana in the Homecoming game, 35-14. In the first quarter Gray Kerrick caught a popping ball and ran 80 yards for a touchdown, with Del Coleman making the extra point. In the fourth quarter the Panthers scored their second touchdown, a pass play good for 42 yards from Del Coleman to J. R. Fohey. Gray Kerrick then plunged over for the touchdown, and Del Coleman added the extra point. The Panthers ended an eight game losing streak when they defeated Warsaw 19-0 inahome game on November 6. Palmyra's first touchdown came in the second quarter on an 88-yard run by Del Coleman, who also added the extra point. Del Coleman also scored again in the third quarter going over from six yards out to end a 65-yard drive. The Panthers scored again in the third quarter with Don Hevel going over from 4 yards out. On November 10 the Palmyra Panthers closed their 1959 season with a home game vs. LaPlata, in which we were defeated 32-14. Due to the long losing season the boys seemed as if they were glad to see the football season over. The 1959 football season was a dreary one in which we had a lot of bad weather. ga v1?...at,,ff ggaf FIRST ROW: Jeanie Johnson, Janice Phillips, Carol Comstock, Kathy Pickett, Karen Huckabee, Margaret Tuley, Marilyn Million, Jane Saffarrans, Sherol Hinds, Gayle Calvert, Linda Hutcherson, Joyce McGlothlin, Becky Taylor, Susan Sears, SECOND ROW: Coach Looney, This year the Pantherettes and the Panthers had a new coach, Mr. Edward Looney. Mr. Looney has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education and is working on his Masters Degree in Guidance, which he hopes to obtain this summer. He has been married for four years. Mr. Looney's teams in the past have done real well in the Regionals, usually only losing one game. On November 24 the whistle blew to startthe first game of the basketball season for the Pantherettes. They started their season off to a wonderful start by beating Philadelphia-Emerson. Fourteen girls were out for basketball this year which consisted of two seniors, three juniors, six sophomores, and three freshmen. The Pantherettes took second place in the Monroe Tournament, and first place in the Shelbina Tournament. The girls were eliminated from the Palmyra Tournament by our rival, Monroe City. The closest and most exciting games of the season were played in the different tournaments, with the Shelbina Tournament the most exciting. ln the semi-finals we beat Shelbina by only two points. Then in the finals the Pantherettes beat their rival, Monroe City, 42-27. This was the highlight of the whole season, beating Monroe and giving all the players a thrill, and then receiving the first place trophy, The Pantherettes opened their season with a bang, and in the same way they closed it, by beating Canton in the final game of the season, The Pantherettes had nine wins and six losses for their overall record. They also had four conference games, in which they were defeated in all of them. The girls'team lost two senior lettermenthis yearg Carol Comstock, guard, and Sherol Hinds, forward. We wish these two girls a lot of success and happiness in the future, and hope that they will come to see P,H,S, teams play next year. JANE SAFFARRANS Sophomore-Forward Lettered 2 yrs. The Palmyra Panthers ended their 1959-60 basketball season witharecord of three conference wins and four losses. The boys were defeated in the Monroe City, Shelbina, and the Palmyra Tournaments. One outstanding game of the season was the one played December 18 against Shelbina. In the last few seconds of the game, Shelbina was leading 44-43. Ordell Johnson was fouled and made his two free throws putting Palmyra ahead 45-44 to win the game. On January 15, the Panthers traveled to LaPlata for a conference game. The Panthers used a full court press and a fast break the entire game. This seemed to work effectively as Palmyra Won 51-37. Another exciting victory of the season was the game of February 9 against the McCooey Shamrocks. Because the Shamrocks had defeated the Panthers earlier in the season, the Panthers were really out for a victory. The final score of the game resulted in Palmyra's favor with Del Coleman piling in 38 points for the Panthers. ' The Panthers are losing seven seniors, three of which are on the starting line-up: Delbert Coleman, Ken McGlothlin, and Don Hevel. The remaining four graduates are: Richard Ledbetter, Willy Blankenship, Richard Lugering, and Dewayne Larenson. The best of luck to the boys graduating and to next year's team, -I r...
