The building again becomes alive with the excite- ment of a basketball game, the gaiety ofthe Christmas Dance, the anxious anticipation of the rising curtain on the night of the Senior Play, or the delight and enchantment of the Outer Space Gardens on the warm, spring evening of the Prom. These, too, are important pattern of the student's life, 4' X ,...., A , f -A bi 33 1 it 1x .xN.,ss s XX' ith ii '- iv. 1 ji' 4 4 esf 1 1 N I ' I 37,11 Qrzpv 1 ,- K he 2 his ft W L game? They may not be better, but they are dif- ferent. The faculty mem- bers and students have a- dapted themselves well to the whims of this super- intendent. For this, I am grateful. We teachers want to make your school expe- rience worth remember- ing. We are working toward a balanced school pro- gram--a program which recognizes each depart- ment as an integral part of your whole school ex- perience. Last, and most important of all, we want to help each pupil find his or her place in the sun. Fortified with respect for huma.n dignity andatrue sense of their own worth, the pupils of Palmyra can make their school experience worth remembering. Donald R. Hevel Superintendent of Schools Board Of Education The Palmyra Board of Education is composed of the following civic-minded citizens: Glendel Greening ................... President Stephen Dearing ................. Vice-President H. Dean Cissna . . . Secretary Floyd Edwards . . Treasurer Herb Foster Elmer Lovegreen The Board of Education was organized differently than it has been in the past. Business is now done by committees. The duties of Stephen Dearing and Glendel Greening, members of the Teachers' Committee, are to interview prospective teachers and to review the work of the present teachers, making recommendations to the Board. The Buildings and Grounds Committee, composed of H, Dean Cissna and Elmer Lovegreen, inspects the buildings and grounds, seeing that they're kept in a good state of repair. The duties of the Finance Committee, Herb Foster and Floyd Edwards, are to provide the necessary revenue to operate the school and to review activity funds and other accounts, seeing that they're being properly expended. The Board feels that this type of arrangement will provide more efficient management of the school and reduce the time required for board meetings, We would like to thank these men who give their time to the important business of managing our school, The happiest times of your lives are the days you spend in school. This will be understood more as the years pass and as this Searchlight recalls many pleasant experiences and mem- ories of your high school days. It is one of the best Searchlights we have had, and I believe it reflects the year as a whole. I hope you will remember this year as asuccessful oneg a happy oneg and one in which many friends were made. George R. Senior Class Ifstory It was back in 1955 that 77 of us first entered P. H, S, Although we were a little bewildered, we soon got into the swing of high school life. Our .float won third prize in the Homecoming Parade with the theme, Iron 'em Out, Press 'em Flat. The next year, 1956,was abig one for us as Sophomores. That year our class was led by these officers: President, Charlotte Haerr, Vice-President, Don Hoerrg Secretary, Marie Mengeg Treasurer, Maurie Saffarransg Reporter, Mike Well, Student Council Representatives, Faye Yackley and Jim Wesley. Miss Haerr and Mr, Hoffson were our sponsors. Linda Durham and Marie Menge were our Football attendants, April Phillips, our Basketball atten- dant, and Karen Disselhorst, our Barnwarming attendant. Our candidate for Key Club Sweetheart was Marie Menge, and Maurie Saffarrans was chosen to go on the Sophomore Pilgrimage. Our leaders for this project were: Girls' Chairman, Faye Yackleyg Boys' Chairman, John Bartong and, General Manager, Maurie Saffarrans. Other big events of the year were the selection of our class rings and, of course, our Prom. Our beautiful Outer Space Garden was way out to say the least. Music was furnished by Junior Musolino's orchestra. Professor, How Could You? was the title of our Junior Play under the direction of Mrs. Cramer. This year our float, titled We'l1 Steam Right Thru Their Line, won second prize in the Homecoming Parade. Then came the big year--our last at P. H. S. Mike Well was elected President of the Student Bodyg and, our class officers were: President, Dick Disselhorst: Vice-President, Ingrid Hoderleing Secretary, Linda Durham, Treasurer, April Phillips: Reporter, Phillip Porter: Student Council Representatives, Bonnie Gottman and Jim Church. Emily Becker was chosen Key Club Sweetheart. One of our biggest events this year was the publishing of our Searchlight, of which we are all very proud. Our Homecirning float won second prize in the Parade with the theme, When We Blast, McCooey Can't Last. Our play was another successful event. Finally the long awaited month came--and with it came our Senior trip to Memphis, Tennesseeg Baccalaureateg and the night of Commencement. We, the Class of '59, leave P, H, S, with regret, for we know that we are leaving behind four of the happiest years of our lives. WARREN AKERSON Warren His studies were pursued but never over-taken. S. brought the fourth place and second place trophies to the girls from the Monroe and Palmyra Tourneys respectively and first place rating in the conference. The boys took third at Palmyra and Monroe City Tourneys and second in the regionals. Last year the girls' squad took top honors at Monroe, Palmyra, and Community RVI Tournaments, and first place honors in the conference. This season was a white sweater year for the girls, finishing the season with 24 wins and no losses. The boys took first place at Palmyra, Community RVI Tourneys and second place at the Monroe City Tournament ending the season first in the conference. The Pantherettes took second place in the Palmyra Tournament during this '58-'59 season, and the Panthers took first place in the Monroe City Tournament and second in the Palmyra Tournament. The Pantherettes won eleven games and suffered three losses in Conference play this year, losing to Canton, Ewing, and LaGrange. This placed them in first position in the Conference, entitling P, H, S, the right of keeping the Conference trophy after having retained it for three consecutive years. The Pantherettes were defeated by Monroe City in the Monroe City and Palmyra Tourna- ments, taking second in the Palmyra Tournament. The squad completed their season on the evening of February 17th, when they defeated the Monroe City girls by 20 points after three previous unsuccessful attempts.
